Hello,
I hate to bug you all with this, but it seems to be your specialty and it's better (for now) than bashing my PC to pieces. My PC has gradually ground to a halt and has gotten very buggy (locked up and crashing programs, malware pop ups, Generic Win32 host errors that change the look and performance of everything, no access to Windows Updater, etc.). I've done all the typical Antivirus (Verizon Security Suite, Avast), Spyware (Spybot SD) and Registry (Glary Utils) steps, along with cleaning up old files and defragging, but it's still a mess. Anyway, I was hoping you all could offer some advice.
Thanks,
Will

Gringo,
Thanks for the quick reply. DeFogger is done, DDS is running now (been running for about 8 minutes), but I can't get ot RKUnHooker - when I click I get a "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" error - like I've lost my connection (but I haven't). This is the same error when I try to get to Microsoft/Windows Updater pages.

Nope. I can see where that would be handy - but this is all I got.

Hello

lets try this one

Download the GMER Rootkit Scanner. Unzip it to your Desktop.

Before scanning, make sure all other running programs are closed and no other actions like a scheduled antivirus scan will occur while the scan is being performed. Do not use your computer for anything else during the scan.
  • Double click GMER.exe.
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run a full scan...click on NO, then use the following settings for a more complete scan..
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Ensure the following are UNCHECKED ...
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)

Click the image to enlarge it
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "ark.txt"
  • Save the log where you can easily find it, such as your desktop.
**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries

Please copy and paste the report into your Post.

Gringo,
Here's what I got:

DeFogger runs
DDS runs but doesn't ever finish
I can't get to RKUnHooker to download
I downloaded GMER and it started running, but it locks up everytime at \Device\00000062 - at which point the entire PC stops responding. I've tried it about 4 times, and let it sit for a few hours, but nothing.
I did get notified that a virus was blocked (I've gotten this one a lot recently) - Packed.Win32.Krap.hc on C:\Windows\System32\borhlbd.dll

Thanks,
Will

Greetings

perfect that is what I needed to see.

One or more of the identified infections is Known as a Backdoor Trojan. - TDSS rootkit <--please read

What this virus does do.
QUOTE
Functionality
The functionality that the Trojan exhibits implies that it has been designed with profit-making as its primary objective. Making money from the Web typically involves generating Web traffic, installing pay-per-install software and also by generating sales leads for other Web sites and services of a dubious nature. It tries to achieve its objective by employing an array of techniques to try and make the user participate in these income-generating activities.

What the virus can do.
QUOTE
Backdoor.Tidserv is a Trojan horse that uses an advanced rootkit to hide itself. It also displays advertisements, redirects user search results, and opens a back door on the compromised computer.

This "could" allow hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can clean this machine but I cannot guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. "If you would like to continue, then follow the steps below, otherwise please let me know"

I Would like you to do the following.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links.
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"
In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

Gringo,
I ran ComboFix. The only issues I had were "Run a DLL as an App" encountered problems and needed to close, and Windows Explorer had the same issue. Otherwise, running it went smoothly. When I reconnected to the internet and opened IE, I did get a pop up to some "professional scan" site that was blocked. I re-enable all my AV stuff, but havent' redone the DeFogger. I'm trying to attach the CF log, but the file won't upload, and when I paste the text into this field, IE goes to a "cannot display" screen.
Thanks,
Will

Always good to meet another Will - mediafire is being goofy as well - failing to upload to due IO Error. I still haven't re-enabled de-Fogger, does that have something to do with this?

I want you to run this tool for me next.

tdsskiller:

Please read carefully and follow these steps.
  • Download TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.
  • Extract its contents to your desktop.
  • Once extracted, open the TDSSKiller folder and doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then on Start Scan.
  • If an infected file is detected, the default action will be Cure, click on Continue.
  • If a suspicious file is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue.
  • It may ask you to reboot the computer to complete the process. Click on Reboot Now.
  • If no reboot is require, click on Report. A log file should appear. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
  • If a reboot is required, the report can also be found in your root directory, (usually C:\ folder) in the form of "TDSSKiller.[Version]_[Date]_[Time]_log.txt". Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
