I'm having problems with my computer restarting by itself and also game freezing- it also gives an error message after restarting- ' the system has recovered from a serious error ' etc but i think it maybe to do with background processes? when i go into task manager i see that there are about 30 processes running, is this normal for XP Professional?

30 processes is not unreasonable for Windows XP. What processes are running? Post a list and people can advise you if there are any suspicious ones.

What sort of hardware do you have, processor, ram, hard drive, etc.? Do you have up to date anti-virus and anti-spyware programs?

At the top of this page you will see the link Startup Programs.
Click that, then use the search feature to find out what your Startup programs are, and if they're needed, or not.
