I've been trying to run GMER.exe, per your instructions... Unfortunatley, when it runs it gets to a certain point and the computer shuts down to the BIOS screen. The computer then reboots. I believe it shuts down when gmer.exe is accessing the some file (not sure) but it looks like it reboots when it hits: DEVICENTPNP_PC1004 - ??? not sure if this means anything...
I ran the AVG rootkit module but it didn't find anything.
I've disabled AVG and re-ran Gmer.exe and that doesn't work. PC still reboots by itself...
Computer is an older HP Laptop running XP Professional.
I did manage to run the DDS.SCR - I have included the log files
The problem started last week when the malware: Microsoft Security Essentials (pop-up) was allowed to run. I ran rkill.exe and malwarebytes and it found 12 trojans and removed them. I then ran AVG and it did not find anything.
Now, I cannot access the internet - IE 8 cannot connect - running Microsoft's diagnostics doesn't help. I cleared the browser cash files, cookies, etc. rebooted the router, etc, but no luck. I tried a system restore to a previous date but I get a message that system restore was unsuccessful...
But, when I reconnect the computer through the ethenet port on the router - I can see that the router begins blinking rapidly, so I know that something is accessing the internet and sending/receiving data somewhere. - I looked at the router log file to see if I could capture some of what was being accessed - There were many sites I didn't recognize - rukeianno.com, gogo.com, blog.hgtv.com, google_analytics.com, pix04.revsci.net, ewscripps.112.2o7.net, vbt.ign.com, mevio.com,mygeek.com, revsci.net... a netstat log didn't show much but two IP addresses: 212.96.161.238 and 67.135.105.104
I am keeping the computer disconnected until I can figure out what is going on. Seeking help - will now return to banging head on wall and drooling into my PC issues bucket.
Thanks.
Pat M

NOTE: I've managed to get the browser working and now the biggest problem is that the browser is hijacked - It keeps redirecting to all kinds of strange sites. Running AGV and MALEWAREBYTES doesn't detect the hidden virus....I've now disabled all pop-ups and I've gone into my router settings to block some of the same websites that the browser keeps redirecting to. I'll keep adding but some of the sites must be random...
Also, I know whatever has infected my PC turns itself on and accesses sites because even though there is not a browser open - the internet LED and the PC led are flashing rapidly (that's when I disconnect) -
I've downloaded and run MICROSOFTS WINDOWS MALICIOUS SOFTWARE REMOVAL TOOL (OCT. VERSION) but, it too can't find the infection. I think I'll send Bill Gates a note mentioning how this really is annoying...
I've discovered that shouting loudly at the monitor - though good for effect - really doesn't help...
Looking through your forums - I too realized that my JAVA is outdated. I downloaded the latest (jre-6u22-windows) BUT, when I tried to use the Remove Software feature - I was given a notice that an 'installation' is already running (even though I don't have anything going on) I suspect this too is part of this virus behavior.
Note: staring intently at the keyboard hoping that a anti-virus KARMA wave will hit the brain and provide the removal answer doesn't work...yet.

<b>EDIT: Posts merged ~BP</b>

Update today - I ran the FULL scan of Microsoft's Antivirus tool and it found a virus named PWS.Win32/Zbot.gen!W - the tool said it was removed. However, my browser (IE 8) still gets hijacked. If I type in the web address I can navigate O.K., to the site. I'll try rerunning this tool in SAFE MODE.
I have turned on the Firewall per BleepingComputer's advice (I never knew it was turned off! - Yikes!) and for assurance sakes I have purchased a six pack of Killians Irish Red and a DVD copy of BRAVEHEART (great movie) - so, when this issue gets resolved - I watch this and pretend that the virus I had is a rebirth of English king, Longshanks...
I have gone to my three banking / investement sites, from my work PC, and changed my passwords - Great advice here, by the way.
I still can't unistall the old JAVA. Perhaps when in SAFE mode I'll be able to.

<b>EDIT: Posts merged ~BP</b>

Oct 21 - was finally able to remove the old JAVA and install the newer version.
The browser still gets Hijacked. Still getting pop-ups asking to install one thing or another.
Starting to think that perhaps going back to paper and pen is not such a bad idea...
Am running scans again tonight.

EDIT: Posts merged ~BP

Hello Gringo,
Thank you for taking time to help me with this problem. The browser still gets hijacked. On Oct. 22 I ran a full scan with Malewarebytes and two trojans were found. I also ran a full scan with Ad-Aware and it found one trojan. I will not do another scan unless instructed to do so.

Greetings

One or more of the identified infections is Known as a Backdoor Trojan. - TDSS rootkit <--please read

What this virus does do.

Functionality
The functionality that the Trojan exhibits implies that it has been designed with profit-making as its primary objective. Making money from the Web typically involves generating Web traffic, installing pay-per-install software and also by generating sales leads for other Web sites and services of a dubious nature. It tries to achieve its objective by employing an array of techniques to try and make the user participate in these income-generating activities.

What the virus can do.

Backdoor.Tidserv is a Trojan horse that uses an advanced rootkit to hide itself. It also displays advertisements, redirects user search results, and opens a back door on the compromised computer.

This "could" allow hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can clean this machine but I cannot guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. "If you would like to continue, then follow the steps below, otherwise please let me know"

I Would like you to do the following.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links.
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

Hi Gringo - Thanks for the links. The hard drive reformat may be a good option. This Virus / Maleware / Identity Theft stuff really has me spooked! I'm now thinking of stocking up on feed and raising carrier pigeons for communications - dump the electronic world!

The computer still has a browser hijack virus - It always happens when I click on a link after a google or yahoo search. If I paste the address in the web address bar then I can get to the sites. There are one of two web sites that always appear on a hijack, before a redirect to some goofy site..- one www.a.checklactalon.com and the other www.hytr8lzz02.com -these two sites will appear on the bottom of the brower in the address bar.

Hello

It looks like the rootkit is still active. I want you to run this tool for me next.

tdsskiller:

Please read carefully and follow these steps.
  • Download TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.
  • Extract its contents to your desktop.
  • Once extracted, open the TDSSKiller folder and doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then on Start Scan.
  • If an infected file is detected, the default action will be Cure, click on Continue.
  • If a suspicious file is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue.

Greetings

Good That cleaned up some bad guys but I see some other stuff that we need to go after, so I want you to run this custom script for me.

:Run CFScript:

Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the box into the window:

Driver::
ybwfjhtr

DDS::
uInternet Settings,ProxyOverride = <local>
uInternet Settings,ProxyServer = http=127.0.0.1:50370

Save it to your desktop as CFScript.txt

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe
Posted Image
This will let ComboFix run again.
Restart if you have to.
Save the produced logfile to your desktop.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following

  • report from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now after running the script?

Hello Gringo.
I hope you're doing well.
I have not experienced any browser hijackings. However, the computer started bogging down last night as I was typing. It was to the point of of each character taking 1-second to appear - and I could see the hard drive light flickering away as if running something - also, the internet router started flashing as well. There were not any browsers open so I have no idea what network site was being accessed. I unplugged the network connection and will continue to monitor this. Right now it seems to be working O.K.

Regards,

Pat m

These logs are looking alot better. But we still have some work to do.

Please print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file. It will make it easier for you to follow the instructions and complete all of the necessary steps..

uninstall some programs

1. click on start
2. then go to settings
3. after that you need control panel
4. look for the icon add/remove programs
click on the following programs

Adobe Reader 7.0

and click on remove

Update Adobe Reader

Recently there have been vunerabilities detected in older versions of Adobe Reader. It is strongly suggested that you update to the current version.

You can download it from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
After installing the latest Adobe Reader, uninstall all previous versions.
If you already have Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition installed or do not wish to have it installed UNcheck the box which says Also Download Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition.

If you don't like Adobe Reader (53 MB), you can download Foxit PDF Reader(7 MB) from here. It's a much smaller file to download and uses a lot less resources than Adobe Reader.

Note: When installing FoxitReader, be carefull not to install anything to do with AskBar.
[/list]
Clear your Java Cache

  • click on Start-> Control Panel (Classic View)-> Java (looks like a coffee cup)
    • On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button.
    • Next, click on the Delete Files button
    • There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH Checked
      Applications and Applets
      Trace and Log Files
  • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
  • Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Window
  • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

TFC(Temp File Cleaner):

  • Please download TFC to your desktop,
  • Save any unsaved work. TFC will close all open application windows.
  • Double-click TFC.exe to run the program.
  • If prompted, click "Yes" to reboot.
Note: Save your work. TFC will automatically close any open programs, let it run uninterrupted. It shouldn't take longer take a couple of minutes, and may only take a few seconds. Only if needed will you be prompted to reboot.

: Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware :

  • I would like you to rerun MBAM
  • Double-click mbam icon
  • go to the update tab at the top
  • click on check for updates
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is Checked (ticked) except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder and click on Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply
  • If you accidently close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this:
  • C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Download HijackThis

  • Go Here to download HijackThis Installer
  • Save HijackThis Installer to your desktop.
  • Double-click on the HijackThis Installer icon on your desktop. (Vista and Win 7 right click and run as admin)
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
  • Click on Install.
  • It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
  • Once installed it will launch Hijackthis.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Click on Edit > Select All then click on Edit > Copy to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT use the AnalyseThis button its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
  • DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following

  • Log From MBAM
  • report from Hijackthis
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

Hello Gringo,

I noticed that Windows is booting up much faster. There must have been some stuff that was bogging it down. I'm used to starting the PC and then going off to do something (such as build a home addition) while Windows started up. This is much better.

Following are the logs that you asked for.

Greetings

These logs are looking very good, we are almost done!!! Just one more scan to go.

:Remove unneeded startup entries:

This part of the fix is purely optional
These are programs that start up when you turn on your computer but don't need to be, any of these programs you can click on their icons (or start from the control panel) and start the program when you need it. By stopping these programs you will boot up faster and your computer will work faster.

  • Run HijackThis
  • Click on the Scan button
  • Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present):

    • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Cpqset] C:\Program Files\HPQ\Default Settings\cpqset.exe
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Java\Java Update\jusched.exe"
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
      O4 - Global Startup: hp psc 2000 Series.lnk = C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\Digital Imaging\bin\hpobnz08.exe
      O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.EXE
  • Close all open windows and browsers/email, etc...
  • Click on the "Fix Checked" button
  • When completed, close the application.

NOTE**You can research each of those lines >here< and see if you want to keep them or not
just copy the name between the brakets and paste into the search space
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IntelliPoint]

Eset Online Scanner

**Note** You will need to use Internet explorer for this scan - Vista and win 7 right click on IE shortcut and run as admin

Go Eset web page to run an online scannner from ESET.

  • Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan
  • click on the ESET Online Scanner button
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
    • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the activex control to install
    • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is unticked and the Scan Archives option is ticked.
  • Click on Advanced Settings, ensure the options
Scan for potentially unwanted applications, Scan for potentially unsafe applications, and Enable Anti-Stealth Technology are ticked.
  • Click Scan
  • Wait for the scan to finish
  • Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\Eset\Eset Online Scanner\log.txt
Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic

Hello Gringo,
I had difficulty running the ESET program. Below is the log. It looks like there were 4 infections found... (Ugh!).

The first time it scanned the programmed stopped after about 25% completion. I ran it again and I left it alone but after a long time the screen went black and the PC wouldn't respond to any keyboard or mouse input... After a cold re-boot I saw that the log was recorded but I'm wondering if I should run the scan again?

Greetings

There are somethings in the online scan I want to remove so run this scrript for me.

:Run CFScript:

Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the box into the window:

File::
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\6bn9zzs8.default\prefs.js
C:\WINDOWS\CouponsBar.dll

Save it to your desktop as CFScript.txt

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe
Posted Image
This will let ComboFix run again.
Restart if you have to.
Save the produced logfile to your desktop.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following

  • report from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now after running the script?

Gringo

Hello Gringo -

I turned off AVG's Resident Shield (per BC instructions) and then added the new CFScript.txt
ComboFix downloaded an updated version but I received the following message:

ComboFix cannot run
AVG is installed.
This is due to AVG's targeting
of Combofix's files/processes.
It would be dangerous to continue.

Please uninstall AVG or
use another tool.

I'm not sure why I received this message now - since I have run ComboFix twice now.

Have you seen this message before from ComboFix?
