Thought I had learned my lesson when it came to opening .exe I downloaded, guess not. I will list a few of the symptoms before the logs:

1. Made it impossible to connect via wireless usb card, I think it even may have infected the router as I had to hard restart it to factory settings.
2. Gave a 404 error when it was connected via lan ethernet to the following websites: windowsupdate.org, bleepingcomputer.com, and other antivirus/antimalware websites (but would allow connections to google.com etc.)
3. won't allow GMER to finish scan, what I have posted was the log as far as I could get through to save. The first time the PC restarted during a scan, afterward GMER hangs at the end of scan and won't save log
4. Although I can hear sound when my PC starts up and other windows based sounds, none of my media players will play sounds (audio or video files) and windows media player says there is a problem with my sound card (though my devices list shows no such problem)
5. My Taskbar can't decide if it is xp blue or classic '98 grey it keeps switching sometime after start up.

I am currently keeping it offline to avoid infecting my home network, so the scans were done by using a intermediary usb flash drive. AVAST! found some things but I don't think I am out of the woods yet, still have the audio and taskbar issue.

Thanks for your assistance!

Hello and Welcome to the forums!

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Somethings to remember while we are working together.

  • Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
  • Please Do not Attach logs or put in code boxes.
  • Tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
  • Tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
  • Do not run anything while running a fix.

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. By doing this and then choosing Immediate E-Mail notification and then clicking on Proceed you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

In order for me to see the status of the infection I will need a new set of logs to start with.

Greetings

One or more of the identified infections is Known as a Backdoor Trojan. - TDSS rootkit <--please read

What this virus does do.

Functionality
The functionality that the Trojan exhibits implies that it has been designed with profit-making as its primary objective. Making money from the Web typically involves generating Web traffic, installing pay-per-install software and also by generating sales leads for other Web sites and services of a dubious nature. It tries to achieve its objective by employing an array of techniques to try and make the user participate in these income-generating activities.

What the virus can do.

Backdoor.Tidserv is a Trojan horse that uses an advanced rootkit to hide itself. It also displays advertisements, redirects user search results, and opens a back door on the compromised computer.

This "could" allow hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can clean this machine but I cannot guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. "If you would like to continue, then follow the steps below, otherwise please let me know"

I Would like you to do the following.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links.
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

So far, Combofix will not run, I have tried double-clicking,run as, and tried to start from task manager. All failed, combofix tries to run and is showing up in the task manager list for a second then somehow closes. I am attempting to run the program from safe mode, if you have any other ideas I would love to hear them.

well, I got it to run in safe mode with command prompt. However it wants to install windows recovery console. So I restarted in safe mode with networking, but now I am back to ComboFix not running :( so is there anyway to initiate an install of windows recovery console without combofix? One of the issues with this virus is that it would not let me go to windowsupdate.com any advice here would be greatly appreciated. This machine has been offline since I discovered the infection and after I finish the projects I had going with it I intend to reinstall windows.

Hello

Ok lets do the first run without installing the recovery console and just run it in safe mode - If the computer reboots you need to make sure to direct it back into safe mode to finish the scan

I just got recovery console installed off the Winxp disc. I am attempting another run. It did not prompt me to install Win Recovery Console so I guess it took. Scanning now....

Alright, after that little hiccup I finished the ComboFix scan :) I am now attempting a system restore to a point prior to the infection. If my sound works and I can do a windows update then I will consider myself clean (for now)

System Restore is Incomplete, and an error message has returned "Generic Host Process for Win32 Services has encountered a problem and needs to close"

Error Signature:
szAppName: svchost.exe
szAppVer: 5.1.2600.5512
szModName: Unknown
szModVer: 0.0.0.0
offset: 001a61ae

There are some tech reports available if you need to see them.

Sound still doesn't work. Windowsupdate unavailable. System Restore Incomplete. All symptoms are the same, should I just uninstall Avast! and run it again? It's like combofix didn't do anything....

Hello

It looks like the rootkit is still active. I want you to run this tool for me next.

tdsskiller:

Please read carefully and follow these steps.
  • Download TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.
  • Extract its contents to your desktop.
  • Once extracted, open the TDSSKiller folder and doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then on Start Scan.
  • If an infected file is detected, the default action will be Cure, click on Continue.
  • If a suspicious file is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue.
  • It may ask you to reboot the computer to complete the process. Click on Reboot Now.
  • If no reboot is require, click on Report. A log file should appear. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
  • If a reboot is required, the report can also be found in your root directory, (usually C:\ folder) in the form of "TDSSKiller.[Version]_[Date]_[Time]_log.txt". Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.

Ok, it found it. Are the other 'suspicious' files infected? I noticed a few are drivers that operate within many of the symptoms problems I have been having.

Sound is Back, getting on windowsupdate. Should I try a system restore?

I see some other stuff that we need to go after, so I want you to run this custom script for me.

:Run CFScript:

Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the box into the window:

File::
c:\documents and settings\Admin\Application Data\.D1A1CB5228CEB20A.sys

Save it to your desktop as CFScript.txt

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe
Posted Image
This will let ComboFix run again.
Restart if you have to.
Save the produced logfile to your desktop.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following

  • report from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now after running the script?
