Initially presented as random crashes of any application and random restarts. One users Facebook was malfunctioning for a couple of days. Some you-tube clips would not load. Sometimes restarts would hang.
Unchecked "Automatically restart" on System Failure
Revealed BSOD:
IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL....
...
***STOP:0X0000000A (0X00000003, 0X00000002, 0X00000001, 0X804E237F)

On restart Avira reported a number of instances of the Trojans identified in Topic Title

As I had both Avira and Super AntiSpyware resident and was not able to update definitions foe MBAM, I considered that there could be an issue with two resident anti-malware operating simultaneously and exited one at a time to se if that was part of the problem

Rogue Antivirus "Antivurus Studio 2010" windows appeared. I was immediately suspicous of the language and behaviour of these windows and MBAM reported the existance of the Rogues

On restart CHKDSK ran and recovered 3 orphaned files.

Avira reported:
JAVA/AGENT.FK
JAVA/CLASS LOADER.AQ
JAVA/AGENT.**
TR/CRYPT.XPACK.GEN3
TR/PCK.Katusha.0.2744

I then visited BleepingComputer and have now followed the Preparation guide.

Below are the reports

Hello and Welcome to the forums!

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Somethings to remember while we are working together.

  • Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
  • Please Do not Attach logs or put in code boxes.
  • Tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
  • Tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
  • Do not run anything while running a fix.

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. By doing this and then choosing Immediate E-Mail notification and then clicking on Proceed you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

In order for me to see the status of the infection I will need a new set of logs to start with.

Hi Gringo,

Thanks so much for taking the time to answer me. As it happens, I'd had no reply for such a long time, I thought I'd have a go just last night with Avira. This is the first time I've had a moment to get online since.

After start-up Avira would serially flash up detection notices and I responded to them by deleting the infected files (quaranteening wasn't having a permanent result). From there, I ran a full scan (previously it would crash before completing)

The full scan was successful. Another full scan was run after restart with no further infections found.

There were some infected temp files and some infected Quicktime install files. I suspect that the quicktime installer was some sort of infected malware.

I can't say that the machine is completely clean. Avira may not have got it all. I gather that the reports I posted originally may no longer apply.

Is there a process I should follow now to ensure the computer is clean?

Thanks again.

No problems,

Just no time at the moment. Two days ago was the consecration of my brother's grave, today is my father's birthday, Band rehearsal last night, I work full time and have young kids. Annual Taxation Return is due in at the end of this week (Australia) and the cleaning lady is coming tomorrow and I have to prepare the house.

Please be patient. I appreciate your time and will make full use of your advice.

The remark: {!!POSSIBLE ROOTKIT ACTIVITY DETECTED!! =)} was displayed at the end of the RKUnHooker, but that remark is not saved with the report.

No other problems encountered.

Computer is running much better, but has still had a couple of crashes and a spontaneous re-start. We're not using it much at the moment.

Hello

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links.
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

Hi Gringo,

Avira was deactivated and SuperAntiSpyware was shut down.
Despite that a warning appeared that Desktop Antivirus was active, but that ComboFix would attempt to run anyway.

While ComboFix was attempting to install the Recovery Console an error appeared:
Boot Partition could not be enumerated correctly

I don't believe the computer re-booted at all, though I was out of the room for some time, none of the regular "Start-up" applications loaded as they would had a re-boot have occurred. .

No other problems were encountered

Download BootCheck.exe to your desktop.
  • Double click BootCheck.exe to run the check
  • When complete, a Notepad window will open with some text in it
  • Save the Notepad file to your desktop as BootCheck.txt

Post #2:

Go to C:\boot.ini

If that file exists, right click and uncheck 'Read Only' and click Apply>OK

Now right click the file again and select 'Open With' and choose Notepad.

If the boot.ini doesn't exist, then open Notepad.

Copy/paste the following text in the quote box below, into Notepad

[boot loader]
timeout=30
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS=1 /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS=2 /fastdetect
scsi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS=3 /fastdetect
scsi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS=4 /fastdetect
scsi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(2)\WINDOWS=5 /fastdetect
scsi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(2)\WINDOWS=6 /fastdetect
C:\WINDOWS=7 /fastdetect

Close the file, and approve the changes made when asked by Windows.

If there was no boot.ini, save the file you just created. Name it boot.ini and save it directly to C:\ drive.

Do Not reboot yet!

Run the Bootcheck.exe and post it's contents for review. It's important that you do not reboot the system until I've reviewed that log.

Ok, looks good. Read through this next set of instructions and print them out if you're not sure you'll remember.

Reboot your system

* Upon reboot, you'll have 30 seconds to choose from the boot menu.
* Use your arrow key scoot on up to 1 /fastdect in the list and press Enter
* Wait for it to boot Windows.
* If you receive an error, click OK to restart the system

* Upon restart you will see the boot menu again. Arrow up to 2 /fastdetect and press Enter.
* Wait for Windows to boot. If you receive an error message, same as before, click OK to restart.

Continue using the arrow key, going in succession from 3 /fastdetect, etc., one at a time, until Windows boots up.

Come back and tell me which # worked for you.
