AVG9 has identified a Virus on my machine, but has been unable to remove it. Please assist in removing the Malware AND advise on the process for ensuring that DATA held on connected USB drives is also cleansed.

The problem initially manifested in a failed boot up into windows, with the screen hanging before the login Windows XP log In splash screen. At this point the screen was black and just a pointed cursor on the display. I have managed to re-boot into Safe Mode with Networking and run the DDS software. Please see attached logs and advise

Hello and Welcome to the forums!

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Somethings to remember while we are working together.

  • Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
  • Please Do not Attach logs or put in code boxes.
  • Tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
  • Tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
  • Do not run anything while running a fix.

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. By doing this and then choosing Immediate E-Mail notification and then clicking on Proceed you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

In order for me to see the status of the infection I will need a new set of logs to start with.

Hello again. OK i have attepmted again to carry out your requests, however I have not been unable to complete all of the steps. Here are the details of my activities:

1. I had to boot into Safe Mode with Networking as Normal boot does not work (initial sympton - log in splash screen does not appear, just an arrow cursor on a black background).
2. The Defogger ran sucessfully.
3. I ran the DDS as requested - Logs attched.
4. I did try to run RKUnhookerLE.EXE BUT this failed. The error displayed in a pop up warning window was "Error Loading/Opening driver".

so not sure if we are much further on than my inital post? - Please advise and i will carry out the nest steps

With thanks
Al.

Hello

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links.
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

No i didn't - purely beacuse i didn;t want to loose any data. Since the ComboFix has run though the computer does now seem to boot into windows - but with the "Old Style" Menu/Rask bar across the bottom (this is one of the early indications that something was wrong when i first manually ran the AV scan.

Anyway i am at a point now where i hope i can get into Windows normally now, but i don't know if the Virus has gone (basically awaiting instructions on the next setps) - will ComboFix have cured my virus? or just got me up and running again? I am not using the machine until i get further instructions.

Thanks for all of your help so far and please advise next steps

With thanks
Al

Greetings

Good I didn't know you could get back to windows

:Run CFScript:

Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the box into the window:

Registry::
[HKLM\~\services\sharedaccess\parameters\firewallpolicy\standardprofile\GloballyOpenPorts\List]
"135:TCP"=-
"5000:TCP"=-
"5001:TCP"=-
"5002:TCP"=-
"5003:TCP"=-
"5004:TCP"=-
"5005:TCP"=-
"5006:TCP"=-
"5007:TCP"=-
"5008:TCP"=-
"5009:TCP"=-
"5010:TCP"=-
"5011:TCP"=-
"5012:TCP"=-
"5013:TCP"=-
"5014:TCP"=-
"5015:TCP"=-
"5016:TCP"=-
"5017:TCP"=-
"5018:TCP"=-
"5019:TCP"=-
"5020:TCP"=-

Save it to your desktop as CFScript.txt

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe
Posted Image
This will let ComboFix run again.
Restart if you have to.
Save the produced logfile to your desktop.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following

  • report from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now after running the script?

OK i am not having much luck here and it's very frustrating as i have no idea what is happening.

So anyway i dragged the file across into combofix and it ran as anticipated - however it said it needed to re-boot due to "RootKit activity - re-boot required".. so it started A RE-BOOT but failed, so i gave it some help by running shutdown at the CMD prompt. It hung on an APP, so i stopped that and it re-booted ok.. when it cam back up i went into the same username and the Combofix appeared to resume (blue dos type screen) but only for a short time and then it just seems to stop. I had a look for a log file but could not see anything obvious.

Since then i have re-booted a couple of times and tried again, but so far no joy.. i have a feeling that if i run CombiFix in Safe Mode, it may allow my to try the drag and drop again in full windows - i may try that later? - more likely i will wait for your response though.

The latest i can give you is the attached log file - i managed to run the RootKit Unhooker (that has not worked the other day) i assumed this might be useful based on the error code from CombiFix.

Please advise soonest

With thanks
Al

Hello

Ok lets try this, I want you to run combofix in safe mode but it is very important that when combofix reboots the computer for you to direct it back into safe mode so it can finish the scan.

Boot into Safe Mode

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.

after combofix has finished its scan please post the report back here.

Hi Gringo

I have now re-run ComboFix by dragging the *.txt onto it.

Remember this was in SAFE MODE - files attached - The system did NOT re-boot during this process, but the message box did appear asking me if i wanted to work in Windows SAFE MODE or Restore the system - the same message you get when you first get into SAFE MODE - It appeared as ComboFix completed.

I have avoiding booting back into Windows proper, as i have a hunch that this is when the Infection is re-establishing itself - just a hunch so i await you informed instructions :)

Please advise next step

With thanks
Al
