Hello

I am running a computer with Windows XP Professional (with SP3), an AMD 9950 quad-core processor with 2.6 GHz, 3.25 GB of RAM.

Last December I got the mabidwe virus and I (thought I) managed to get through it by using a regimen of using mbam, avira and hijackthis. I had lost my files but was able to recover them using Recover My Files v4. After recovering the files, I made sure to run MBAM and Avira on them and got rid of any of the infected ones before moving them to a TD GreenDrive2. Everything was going well but then I began moving some other files from the GreenDrive over to my hard drive and now my computer shuts off, often without warning. After this happens, it takes 3-4 times for Windows to finish the boot sequence. Specifically, after the Windows XP splash page comes up the sequence will get interrupted and it will go back to the AMD splash screen. Occasionally the sequence will dead end at a blank blue screen requiring a power-down before it will do anything else. Certain actions seem to cause the random shut down to happen with additional frequency - using remote desktop connection through a VPN, attempting a file search, trying to connect to an online server (for a video game) - but it will happen other times with no discernible cause. My final red flag is that Avira can no longer complete a full system scan without the computer shutting off (though the rootkit search will still complete). I then tried an mbam sweep and, once again, the computer shut off without allowing the scan to finish.

My primary concern is getting the computer to work again, obviously, but a secondary concern is whether or not I would be able to turn on the GreenDrive and scan that without it shutting down.

Here is a hijackthis log with the green drive off:

I started up the greendrive and then performed another HijackThis scan but the results were identical (at least for now)

Thanks in advance for any help!
Dominic

After reading through the intro some more, I see that you guys prefer the dds and GMER routes.

Here is the dds log. I attempted to run GMER but the system shut down several times while trying to use it.

I'm in the UK so night shift might actually work for us. :thumbup2:

There's no such thing as the mabidwe virus but the format of the file name suggests a trojan called Vundo.

Please run Combofix so we can check that out

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop making sure you rename it comfix.exe
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. (Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive.)
  • Double click on Comfix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

I ran combofix as described. I realized halfway through that my external drive was not turned on (I've been leaving it off as it seems to cause more problems). After running combofix I turned on the drive, refreshed the device manager until it was recognized and then ran combofix again which caused the computer to shut down in the middle of the scan. Should I attempt to run it again with the drive on or should I just forget about the external drive for now? At any rate, here is the combofix log:

Please run Combofix again with the external drive plugged in. The above log doesn't look that bad so maybe the infection reached the drive.

Post the log as before. :thumbup2:

This time combofix managed to proceed without shutting down though it doesn't look like it found anything new. Also, I notice that after I run combofix and start firefox that firefox says it is no longer the default browser. Here is the log:

Also, I notice that after I run combofix and start firefox that firefox says it is no longer the default browser

Combofix defaults the browser to IE, go ahead and change it back.

Yes, just a blip from plugging in the external drive I think, the drive is clean. Please run ESET's online scanner now

  • Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESET OnlineScan
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    • Click on Posted Image to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Check Posted Image
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Leave the top box checked and then check Posted Image
  • Push the Start button.
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, push Posted Image
  • Push Posted Image, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Push Posted Image
NOTE: If no malware is found then no log will be produced. Let me know if this is the case.

I've tried running the ESET scanner three times and the computer has shut down ~12 minutes into the scan each time. I will continue attempting to run the scan though if you have an alternate course of action, it'd be appreciated.

We will try an alternative scanner. ESET doesn't always work - malware or no.

Perform an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner. This can take a long time so please be patient.

If you have troubles getting it to run.... - STOP - and tell me about it!

(Requires free Java Runtime Environment (JRE) be installed before scanning for malware as ActiveX is no longer being used.)
  • Click on the Posted Image ...button.
  • The program will launch and fill in the Information section ... on the left.
  • Read the "Requirements and Limitations" then press... the Posted Image ...button.
  • The program will begin downloading the latest program and definition files.
It takes a while... please be patient and let it finish.
  • Once the files have been downloaded, click on the Posted Image ...button.
In the scan settings make sure the following are selected:
    • Detect malicious programs of the following categories:
      Viruses, Worms, Trojan Horses, Rootkits
Spyware, Adware, Dialers and other potentially dangerous programs
    • Scan compound files (doesn't apply to the File scan area):
      Archives
      Mail databases
By default the above items should already be checked.
    • Click the Posted Image ...button, if you made any changes.
  • Now under the Scan section on the left:Select My Computer
  • The program will start and scan your system. This will run for a while, be patient... let it run.
Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Save the scan results as a Text file ... save it to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste the saved scan results file in your next reply.

When I first went to the site I received a notification that the certificate was expired but I went ahead and accepted as the site says:

Program download is in progress. Please wait. To allow further operations of Kaspersky Online Scanner 7.0, agree in the security warning to launch the Java application signed by Kaspersky Lab.

After allowing it to download and running it as you instructed the scan started but then the computer shut off again.

Please run TDSSKiller

  • Download TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.

  • Extract its contents to your desktop and make sure TDSSKiller.exe (the contents of the zipped file) is on the Desktop itself, not within a folder on the desktop.

  • Go to Start > Run (Or you can hold down your Windows key and press R) and copy and paste the following into the text field. (make sure you include the quote marks) Then press OK.

    "%userprofile%\Desktop\TDSSKiller.exe" -l report.txt

  • Now click Start Scan.
  • If Malicious objects are found, ensure Cure is selected then click Continue > Reboot now.
  • Click Close
  • Finally press Report and copy and paste the contents into your next reply. If you've rebooted then the log will be found at C:\

It looks like these restarts aren't connected to the malware.

Please run Dr Web, this runs in safe mode so should be more likely to run.

Before we start fixing anything you should print out these instructions or copy them to a NotePad file so they will be accessible. Some steps will require you to disconnect from the Internet or use Safe Mode and you will not have access to this page.

Please download DrWeb-CureIt and save it to your desktop. DO NOT perform a scan yet.

Reboot your computer in "Safe Mode" using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".

Scan with Dr.Web CureIt as follows:
  • Double-click on launch.exe to open the program and click Start. (There is no need to update if you just downloaded the most current version
  • Read the Virus check by DrWeb scanner prompt and click Ok where asked to Start scan now? Allow the setup.exe to load if asked by any of your security programs.
  • The Express scan will automatically begin.
(This is a short scan of files currently running in memory, boot sectors, and targeted folders).
  • If prompted to dowload the Full version Free Trial, ignore and click the X to close the window.
  • If an infected object is found, you will be prompted to move anything that cannot be cured. Click Yes to All. (This will move any detected files to the C:\Documents and Settings\userprofile\DoctorWeb\Quarantine folder if they can't be cured)
  • After the Express Scan is finished, put a check next to Complete scan to scan all local disks and removable media.
  • In the top menu, click Settings > Change settings, and uncheck "Heuristic analysis" under the "Scanning" tab, then click Apply, Ok.
  • Back at the main window, click the green arrow "Start Scanning" button on the right under the Dr.Web logo.
  • Please be patient as this scan could take a long time to complete.
  • When the scan has finished, a message will be displayed at the bottom indicating if any viruses were found.
  • Click Select All, then choose Cure > Move incurable.
  • In the top menu, click file and choose save report list.
  • Save the DrWeb.csv report to your desktop.
  • Exit Dr.Web Cureit when done.
  • Important! Reboot your computer because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
  • After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web in your next reply. (You can use Notepad to open the DrWeb.cvs report)

I've run the scan and it did find some viruses. Now, though, whenever I start the computer Windows says I need to check the drives for consistency. So far I've been skipping this step but I have yet to successfully log on hence no logs quite yet. Should I let the disk check go on?
