Hi, I need help regarding this spyware/malware (not sure which one infected me) that keeps disabling my task manager, registry editor, Windows Firewall and the Safeboot mode. I already tried running SuperAntiSpyware and MBAM in normal and safe mode but it keeps coming back.

This is an office computer and we have files here that I don't want to mess up, so I hope I don't get to do a full reformat.

Here's the description of the computer:

Windows XP
Professional
Version 2002
Service Pack 3

-No internet connection prior to the problem at hand. But I seem to lost suddenly the connection a month back. I'm currently using another PC to connect to the net.

Here's a summary of what happened:

It all started when I enabled the File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Network and access a shared folder. Then that's where I noticed that the Task manager, Regeditor and Firewall got disabled. I run a full scan using SuperAntiSpyware, and AVG 9.0 and was able to get results. I got a Sality_Y/X (not sure if it was Y or X) during the AVG scan, I searched it and found out that it's very nasty.

Run HJT and getting the result of disabled Regedit. I tried fixing that but it still keeps coming back.

I got it to boot in Safe Mode and I had AVG scan it, but I cut that scan short coz I was asked to do something on the computer, I stopped the scan, reboot it to normal mode and got the blue screen error, it was a Page_fault something error. I was able to fix it by switching the RAMs. Now after that here's what I did:

-Did a system restore
-Disabled system restore
-Uninstalled AVG (I thought that was the one causing the problem coz I stopped the scan and maybe that got messed up)
-Uninstall/Installed SAS again
-Installed MBAM
-Did a scan both on Normal and Safe Mode using SAS & MBAM

Now aside from the disabled Task manager, Regeditor, Firewall and Safeboot mode, I can't seem to install AVG, getting a registry error during installation.

Also getting Runtime Error when running CCleaner, saying floating point support not loaded.

And lastly, getting autorun.inf and some .exe and .pif files that re-creates after deletion on both the C and E drive.

I hope you guys can help me. Thanks in advance.

  • Tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
  • Tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
  • Do not run anything while running a fix.

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. Hi Gringo, thanks for waiting. I have done everything that you've instructed. Here's the logs. No problems during the scan but the only thing I notice is that DeFrogger didn't ask me to reboot so I didn't reboot the pc, is that ok?

Here's the DDS:

Hello

I got a Sality_Y/X
If it is Sality there is not much we are going to be able to do. It is a very aggressive virus and if it is in your network you may need to format more than one computer. I will check this one out and see what we have.

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links.

Hi, sorry for the delay, got busy with work yesterday. I did run the ComboFix scan but I didn't have it install/update the recovery console since the infected computer has no connection. If it's that bad then I might have to format it. After the scan seems nothing's change.

By the way, does the Sality virus affect the internet connection of the computer? Coz I wasn't able to connect maybe a month prior to the problem at hand. Thanks.

Here's the ComboFix log:

Hello

lets try this to get you back online, let me know if it works

Download and run WinSockFix. This is a two step process that will Back up the Registry and Reset the Winsock Stack.
  • Double click on WinsockXPFix.exe to open.
  • On the Winsock and TCP Repair Utility screen, click "ReG-Backup"
  • On the ERDNT Welcome screen, click "OK".
  • On the Backup to: screen, click "OK".
  • On the Folder does not exist question screen click "Yes".
  • You will see a status screen as your registry is being backed up.
  • On the Registry backup is complete! screen, click "OK" and you will go back to the main window.
  • On the Winsock and TCP Repair Utility screen, click "Fix".
  • On the Apply the VB_Winsock fix? screen click "Yes".
  • The screen will display a status message "repair completed please reboot."
  • On the Repair Completed screen click "OK" to reboot your computer.
  • If your computer was not using DHCP, you will need to reconfigure TCP/IP.
  • You should have connectivity restored.
If you have internet back come back and let me know if not go to next step

Download LSPFix and save to your desktop.
alternate download site
alternate download site
  • Disconnect from the Internet, go to the LSPfix file and extract (unzip) LSP-Fix into its own folder such as C:\lspfix. (Click here for information on how to do this if not sure. Win 9x/2000 users click here.
  • Open the lspfix folder and double-click on LSPFix.exe to start the program.
  • Check the "I know what I am doing" checkbox.
  • Click "Finish" and LSPfix will restore the chain numbers.
  • restart the computer

Hi

I've done both the WinSockFix and LSPFix but still no connection, I encountered errors during the WinSockFix ReG-Backup, here they are:

Error saving file:
C:\ERDNT\SECURITY
C:\ERDNT\software
C:\ERDNT\system
C:\ERDNT\default
C:\ERDNT\SAM
C:\ERDNT\S-1-5-21-1659004503-1715567821-1177238915-500\ntuser.dat
C:\ERDNT\S-1-5-21-1659004503-1715567821-1177238915-500_Classes\UsrClass.dat

LSPFix prompted that there are no errors found, this is what I got.

No changes necessary.

0 NameSpace provider entries removed
0 NameSpace provider entries renumbered
0 Protocol provider entries removed
0 Protocol provider entries renumbered

I'm still getting the correct IP Address but no connection coming in/out. Also I can ping the IP but not websites.

Thanks.

Jake

it is possible that the sality virus has done that indirectly as the virus will attach itself to any EXE file and if you antivirus tried to clean that file it could have broken it

lets see if sality is indeed onboard

Eset Online Scanner

**Note** You will need to use Internet explorer for this scan - Vista and win 7 right click on IE shortcut and run as admin

Go Eset web page to run an online scannner from ESET.

  • Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan
  • click on the ESET Online Scanner button
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
    • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the activex control to install
    • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is unticked and the Scan Archives option is ticked.
  • Click on Advanced Settings, ensure the options
Scan for potentially unwanted applications, Scan for potentially unsafe applications, and Enable Anti-Stealth Technology are ticked.
  • Click Scan
  • Wait for the scan to finish
  • Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\Eset\Eset Online Scanner\log.txt
Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic

Please download Dr.Web CureIt and save it to your desktop. DO NOT perform a scan yet.
alternate download link
Note: The file will be randomly named (i.e. 5mkuvc4z.exe).

Reboot your computer in "Safe Mode" using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".

Scan with Dr.Web CureIt as follows:
  • Double-click on the randomly named file to open the program and click Start. (There is no need to update if you just downloaded the most current version
  • Read the Virus check by DrWeb scanner prompt and click Ok where asked to Start scan now? Allow the setup.exe to load if asked by any of your security programs.
  • The Express scan will automatically begin.
(This is a short scan of files currently running in memory, boot sectors, and targeted folders).
  • If prompted to dowload the Full version Free Trial, ignore and click the X to close the window.
  • If an infected object is found, you will be prompted to move anything that cannot be cured. Click Yes to All. (This will move any detected files to the C:\Documents and Settings\userprofile\DoctorWeb\Quarantine folder if they can't be cured)
  • After the Express Scan is finished, put a check next to Complete scan to scan all local disks and removable media.
  • In the top menu, click Settings > Change settings, and uncheck "Heuristic analysis" under the "Scanning" tab, then click Apply, Ok.
  • Back at the main window, click the green arrow "Start Scanning" button on the right under the Dr.Web logo.
  • Please be patient as this scan could take a long time to complete.
  • When the scan has finished, a message will be displayed at the bottom indicating if any viruses were found.
  • Click Select All, then choose Cure > Move incurable.
  • In the top menu, click file and choose save report list.
  • Save the DrWeb.csv report to your desktop.
  • Exit Dr.Web Cureit when done.
  • Important! Reboot your computer because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
  • After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web in your next reply. (You can use Notepad to open the DrWeb.cvs report)
