Hello, I have a problem with google searches being hijacked and redirected both in IE8 and Firefox and sometimes websites popup in new windows without prompting.

(I also have components of McAfee on my system which I can't disable or get rid of)

Can someone please help me wacko.gif

Thanks

Mark

Hello,

You're welcome. :) Let's see if we can work around McAfee for now. You have a rootkit so I'd like to shake that loose first and then we'll deal with the other issues. :)

Download TDSSKiller.zip
  • Extract it to your desktop
  • Double click TDSSKiller.exe
  • Press Start Scan
    • If Malicious objects are found then ensure Cure is selected
    • Then click Continue > Reboot now
  • Copy and paste the log in your next reply
    • A copy of the log will be saved automatically to the root of the drive (typically C:\)

Thanks,
tea
Please make a donation so I can keep helping people just like you.
Every little bit helps! :)
You can even use your credit card! Thank you!

Excellent....is everything responding better now? I see a LOT of entries for different AntiVirus programs. I see you use Avast! presently, but all those little bits and bobs are probably hindering things a bit. If I understood correctly you couldn't uninstall McAfee? Give it a try now and let me know how it goes. If you can't, then we'll get rid of it forcibly. :thumbup2:

Hi Tea,

Yes, everything is much better now thanks.

I tried to remove Mcafee through the control panel but the popup box didn't give me any choices to remove.

I would be using Avast as my main Antivirus but as far as the other antivirus programs,
most are recent to try to detect problems that I couldn't find so I am happy to remove.

Thanks for all your help so far

Regards

Mark

Hi Mark,

Glad to hear it, and you're most welcome. :)

Have you ever used Revo Uninstaller? It's excellent, especially when regular uninstalling just doesn't work. http://www.revouninstaller.com/revo_uninstaller_free_download.html Try uninstalling McAfee and those others if you need to. I would not use anything above the intermediate level in Revo. After a reboot when you're done, have another run with HijackThis and post the report so I can see if any of the McAfee entries remain. :)

Thanks,
tea

Hi Tea,

Help, I Had a problem with the Revo, it crashed several times while I was trying to get rid of the McAfee extra files and I had to
start the program again.
Now my computer now won't reboot properly, I can only get as far as the Blue Windows XP page even in Safe Mode.

Any advice??

Thanks & Regards

Mark

Hi Mark,

Never heard of that before....give me a few minutes to see what I can come up with for you. Is McAfee the only thing you used the Revo on? Anything else that might have caused this?

One thing to try while I'm looking.....turn the computer off. Turn it back on and tap F8, just like if you were going to Safe Mode, only this time choose Last Known Good Configuration and see if that does the trick. :) Let me know. :) I assume you're posting from a different computer?

Hi Tea,

I'm using my laptop and using Last Good Config gets the same response. The only other programmes I took out was SuperAntiSpyware and a program to view webpages offline (Can't remember the name)

Hi Mark,

Well, it wasn't me, and it wasn't you......turns out this isn't the first time McAfee has done this to a computer. A colleague of mine had one just last week, he said. <_< Do you have your XP disk?
