Hello all, my name is gabrielman and I have already been to another computer site, that was unable to resolve a problem I am having. The problem resides in a possibly corrupted ieui.dll file. Let me explain more. I was running one of my scheduled virus scans with McAfee total protection, and during the scan things got very slow, and then my computer froze. I had no idea why this had happened so I went to another site to see if they could figure it out. After a long time we determined that it was not malware, or a virus, or anything along those lines. I have had so many scans run it isn't funny  so we figured out that the file may have been corrupted, and I ran a sfc/scan now, and gave the file to them. They told me the only thing they could think to do was to put my laptop back to factory settings, or "fresh out of the box mode". Needless to say I have way too many files I really don't want to lose, so I really really don't want to do that. Now for some info:

I run Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit OS. I have a Toshiba Satellite with a really long number I can't think of right now..... and I use fire fox instead of IE becuase I find it nicer that way. Any more info you need just ask, I will happily find it and tell you. I have back up discs from when I first got this laptop a year ago, and some more recent ones from this year, both from before the problem started. What I am wondering is, is there any way to get said file from those discs, and not lose all of my more recent data?

Thanks in advance!

What happened with sfc /scannow and can you link us to the help you received on that other site?

no problem, just a sec, on the link I mean.

As for the sfc /scannow, nothing, it didn't do anything to fix it, and they didn't find anything, according to them, that indicated that it did, and it still doesn't work....

http://forums.whatthetech.com/index.php?showtopic=112878

From what the tech, they put in a lot of effort too! Not their fault by any means!

Thanks!

So this issue has been happening since July?

Have you tried updating to IE8? You are using IE7 on Windows Vista, that to me means that you are using a non-updated Windows system.

Please perform the following, so that we can get the exact specs of your computer. This will better assist us in helping you more.

Publish a Snapshot using Speccy

The below is for those who cannot get online

Please take caution when attaching a text file to your post if you cannot copy/paste the link to your post, you will need to edit it to make sure that your Windows Key is not present.

Let's clarify something.
Other than McAfee getting stuck at scanning ieui.dll file, do you have any other issues?
Anything not working?

Please download SystemLook from one of the links below and save it to your Desktop.
Download Mirror #1
Download Mirror #2

64-bit users go HERE
  • Double-click SystemLook.exe to run it.
  • Vista users:: Right click on SystemLook.exe, click Run As Administrator
  • Copy the content of the following box into the main textfield:
    :filefind
    ieui.dll
  • Click the Look button to start the scan.

Sorry I have been gone for a few days, been working a lot. I have the next two days off, so I will be able to work on this. Thanks for your responses! I will do the snap shot thing tomorrow when I have more times.

Broni, I have not had many other problems with my computer other than it not being scalable and getting stuck. Any problems I have encountered seem to not be related, and are easily fixed, so no big for now. Now to run said scan, I will post back asap.

I tried IE8 with no luck, I will try the scan you asked me to tomorrow, I am not sure what the windows key is though, and how to remove it if I have to, so let me look that up and tomorrow I will have that for you.

And now for your viewing pleasure, that other scan I just did called SystemLook

Assuming, you're using IE8, this:

C:\Windows\System32\ieui.dll --a---- 164352 bytes [20:58 12/10/2010] [05:56 08/09/2010] 0531F9A78D1C05321018BF108FA9ECFC

The file size and MD5 number is very same as mine.

Yes that is with IE8, and still with the freezes as well. I don't know what an MD5 number is, but is that a good thing? What you said....

Reading back, I can see, you're using IE7, not IE8, correct?

If so, we'd need someone with IE7 to post ieui.dll file size and possibly MD5 number here.

If you tried IE8 already, you may have a leftover.

Actually, I just remembered something else odd that started recently as well. 2 times I have not been able to log into my computer. I put in the password and it says "Welcome" just like normal, then changes to "Preparing your desk top" and then loads up a default desk top, plain and boring looking, nothing as nice as mine, and says that access was denied to my own desktop..... I can easily fix it with a simple restart, but now I am wondering if it is connected......

If you do have IE8, that file is correct and healthy.

This is what I suggest.
Run a free online scan with the ESET Online Scanner and see, if it'll find anything.

Well, all I can say...McAfee is playing some games with you.
You can either contact McAfee, put that file into McAfee exceptions, or.....switch to some other AV program.
