Before I got around to installing antivirus on my new netbook I ended up with a virus that doesnt allow me to connect to the internet (wireless or wired). The windows toolbar Is also classic instead of the typical XP toolbar. I have since installed Avast!, which found some infections and removed them, but problems still exist.

the DDS and GMER are posted below.

Hello byrnedfish,

Please avoid installing/uninstalling or updating any programs and attempting any unsupervised fixes or scans. This can make helping you impossible.

I strongly suggest that you uninstall Ask Toolbar. Some of the bad practices of this toolbar are:
  1. Promoting its toolbars on sites targeted to kids. Details.
  2. Promoting its toolbars through ads that appear to be part of other companies' sites. Details.
  3. Promoting its toolbars through other companies' spyware. Details.
  4. Installing without any disclosure whatsoever and without any consent whatsoever. Details.
  5. Soliciting installations via "deceptive door openers" that do not accurately describe the offer; failing to affirmatively show a license agreement; linking to a EULA via an off-screen link. Details.
  6. Making confusing changes to users' browsers -- increasing Ask's revenues while taking users to pages they didn't intend to visit. Details.
Plesae read the full details HERE.

If you decided to remove Ask Toolbar. Go to Start > Control Panel > Add Remove programs and remove Ask Toolbar.

Then go to C: > Program Files and delete Ask Toolbar folder.

************

You are using an outdated version of Adobe Reader. Adobe has since been updated and the update closes many security holes and provides new features.

First, uninstall earlier versions of Adobe Reader.
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Adobe Reader.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Adobe Reader in the name.

    Adobe Reader 8.1.1
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Adobe Reader version.
Please download the latest version from:
http://get.adobe.com/reader/

And install it. Once installed, launch it, select Help --> Check for Updates and install any updates.
************

Download Security Check by screen317 from here or here.
Save it to your Desktop.

1) I would like to remove the ask.com tool bar. However, it does not show up in the add/remove programs list. It is in my program files. Should i just delete the folder?

2)
I removed all versions of adobe reader, but cannot install a new one because i do not have internet access. other programs were installed on a jump drive and transfered to the infected PC, but i could not figure out how to do this with adobe

3) Security Check Log:

4) I could not get malaware bytes to run on the infected computer. I installed it on a jump drive and tried to run it from there, but when i clicked on it nothing happened. Im wondering if this is related to not having internet access.

Hi byrnedfish,

Your very welcome. smile.gif

Let's go after the rootkit.
  • Download TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.
  • Extract its contents to your desktop and make sure TDSSKiller.exe (the contents of the zipped file) is on the Desktop itself, not within a folder on the desktop.
  • Go to Start > Run (Or you can hold down your Windows key and press R) and copy and paste the following into the text field. (make sure you include the quote marks) Then press OK.

    "%userprofile%\Desktop\TDSSKiller.exe" -l report.txt

  • Now click Start Scan.
  • If Malicious objects are found, ensure Cure is selected then click Continue > Reboot now.
  • Click Close
  • Finally press Report and copy and paste the contents into your next reply. If you've rebooted then the log will be found at C:\

If I've saved you time & money,

Hi byrnedfish,

I still think you have some remenents so we will run ComboFix.

You should NOT use Combofix unless you have been instructed to do so by a Malware Removal Expert.
It is intended by its creator to be used under the guidance and supervision of an Malware Removal Expert, not for private use.

Using this tool incorrectly could lead to disastrous problems with your operating system such as preventing it from ever starting again.
Please read Combofix's Disclaimer.
Further, ComboFix logs are not permitted outside the HijackThis forums and then only when requested by a HJT Team member.

You need to disable your AVAST Antivirus before running ComboFix, as it will prevent it from running.

To disable avast antivirus:
Right click on the avast! icon in system tray (looks like this: ) and choose (Stop On-Access Protection)

Note: If you already have a copy of ComboFix on your system it is essential that you delete it before downloading this copy.

As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console

Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

To work properly, you must install ComboFix on the Desktop. <==IMPORTANT

A caution -
Have no other programs running. Your Task Bar should be clear of any program entries including your Browser.
Do not run Combofix more than once.
Do not touch your mouse/keyboard until the scan has completed, as this may cause the process to stall or your computer to lock. The scan will temporarily disable your desktop, and if interrupted may leave your desktop disabled. If this occurs, please reboot to restore the desktop. Even when ComboFix appears to be doing nothing, look at your Drive light. If it is flashing, Combofix is still at work.

Post the ComboFix log. The log will be save as C:\ComboFix.txt

If I've saved you time & money,
please make a donation so I can keep helping people just like you! You can donate using a credit card and PayPal. Thank you!

Hi byrnedfish,

Your very welcome. smile.gif

We are almost done.

You need to disable your AVAST Antivirus before running ComboFix, as it will prevent it from running.

To disable avast antivirus:
Right click on the avast! icon in system tray (looks like this: ) and choose (Stop On-Access Protection)

Click Start, then Run and type Notepad and click OK.
Open notepad - don't use any other text editor than notepad or the script will fail.
Copy/paste the text in the code box below into notepad:

CODE
Folder::
c:\program files\Ask.com

Name the Notepad file CFScript.txt and Save it to your desktop.

IMPORTANT: The above script was written specifically for this infection on this person's computer. It is NOT to be used on another computer, as it may cause damage that could result in a format!

Then drag the CFScript into ComboFix.exe as you see in the screenshot below.

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply.
The combofix log can also be found at C:\ComboFix.txt.

If I've saved you time & money,
please make a donation so I can keep helping people just like you! You can donate using a credit card and PayPal. Thank you!

Hi byrnedfish,

Reinstall your antivirus, as we are done using ComboFix.

Please install the new version of Adobe Reader. See my previous post (post #2) on how to do this.

Let me know how everything is running.

If all OK, then we will next do the program clean up. smile.gif

Installed adobe reader and everything seems to be fine. It also came with McAfee Security Scan plus. Any suggestions over whether this or Avast is better? i currently have McAfee installed now, but have used Avast on other machines and never had a problem.

Thank you so much for all of your help today, it is greatly appreciated!!
