I got the HJT virus (the thing with the windows pop-up messages that start up spy axe). I found the directions to get rid of it tha told me to run smitrew.exe and run an ewido scan in safe mode and then the panda active scan. I don't really know if I'm explaining this correctly but the problem is that i ran the ewido scan in safe mode (took about 2 days) and when it finished scaning and cleaning the infected objects. I went to view/save the error report and it gave me a pop-up that said I need to handle all infections first. What am I supposed to do to handle them? I went to the quarantine and tried to take all the files and click "remove finally" but whenever I try to do that the program freezes and it doesn't remove the file. What am I supposed to do to finish the ewido and get rid of this? Am I suppsed to just go and manually remove all the individual infected items? There's about 78,000 of them so i don't know if thats possible. Sorry I can't explain my problem tha well and i don't know how to post an HJT logfile or something; this is the first time i've had to deal with something like this. Thanks in advance to anyone that can help.

Create a directory on your hardrive to save HijackThis.exe. A directory like c:\hijackthis. If you do not do this, you will not be able to use the backup/restore features.

Download HijackThis from:

HijackThis Download Site

Save this file into the directory you made previously and then run the program named hijackthis.exe. When the program opens click on the Config button, then click on the Misc Tools button, and click on the Check for update online button. When it completes checking/applying updates press the back button.

Now click on the Scan button and when it is finished click on the Save Log button. A Notepad window will open with the contents of this log. Click on Edit then click on Select all. Then click on Edit and then Click on Copy.

Create a reply to this post here and right click in message area and select paste to paste the log into the post.

Someone will reply to you after reading this post. DO NOT fix any entries unless you understand what you are doing.

To see a tutorial with screenshots on using HijackThis you can click on the link below:

How to use HijackThis to remove Browser Hijackers, Malware, & Spyware

Download this program:

submit files packer

Highlight the files listed below in bold and right-click and selecting copy.

C:\Program Files\SpyAxe\spyaxe.exe
C:\Windows\System32\svchosts.dll

Then start the file packer program and right click in the white box and select paste to paste the copied file names in the field.

Then press the Continue button.

I will create an archive with these files and a small log on your Desktop that starts with a name like requested-file[date].cab.

Rename this file to yourmembername.cab (for example grinler.cab).

Then go to:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/submit-malware.php
and fill in the required fields and browse to this file on your desktop. Finally click on the Send File button.

Is there an add/remove option for spyaxe? Does this file exist? C:\Windows\System32\svchosts.dll

Then do this :

Download Silentrunners.zip from:

http://www.silentrunners.org/

Run the SilentRunners.vbs file. If your antivirus has a script blocker, you will get a warning asking if you want to allow SilentRunners.vbs to run. It might say something like "Malicious Script Warning". This script is not malicious so you are safe in allowing it to run.

When it has finished it will produce a Startup Programs text file. Copy and paste that text file here in your next reply. When it asks do all the updates.

Download RegSrch.zip from here:

http://billsway.com/vbspage/vbsfiles/RegSrch.zip

Unzip it and then double-click on the regsrch.vbs file. When it runs it will prompt you for a string to search for. Enter
svchosts.dll into that field and press enter.

It will run for a while silently and then create a report. Please paste the contents of that report into a reply to this topic.

*Note: If you have Norton script blocking installed, disable it or allow the script to run or this tool won't work!

Download killbox here:

KillBox

Unzip the folder to your desktop.

Start Killbox.exe

When it is open, enter C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchosts.dll into the field labeled "Full path of file to delete".

Select the Delete on reboot option.

Then press the button that looks like a red circle with a white X in it.

Your computer will reboot and check to see if the file is gone.

Then,

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode

and delete the following directory:

C:\Program Files\SpyAxe\spyaxe.exe /h

Start HijackTHis and fix this line:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SpyAxe] C:\Program Files\SpyAxe\spyaxe.exe /h

Reboot back to normal and download the attached .reg file and save it to your desktop. Double-click on the reg file and allow the changes to be merged.

Reboot and post a new log and tell me if its better.

No, C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchosts.exe is a legit microsoft file. I will tell you specifically what files to delete. Please dont delete anything else, as malware tends to try to hide themselves as legit sounding files.

Print out these instructions and then close all windows including Internet Explorer.

Then I want you to fix some of those entries. Please do the following:

Please make sure that you can view all hidden files. Instructions on how to do this can be found here:

How to see hidden files in Windows

Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of these. Then click the Fix button:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SpyAxe] C:\Program Files\SpyAxe\spyaxe.exe /h

Reboot your computer to go back to normal mode and post a new log.

i should post another hijackthis log now?
also, do you thin that the problems that may have been fixed(removed/cleaned) when i ran ewido could have been anything that was not actually a virus? if so could that cause any problems? the other directions i had before i found this message board told me to click ok when prompted to clean files during the scan. Once it got to the end there was alot of infected items found and listed in the quarantine, i don't know if that means they were deleted or not.

Spyaxe isn't running now but it also stopped running for a little while before i fixed the line in HiJackThis, maybe because i left my computer on standby for a little while.

Now, i've restarted the computer several times and it is running much slower than it was before i got the virus. Windows actually had trouble starting up just now (my programs froze and i had to hold the power button to shut it down) and i had a screen that gave me choices about how i wanted to start the computer, in safemode, normal mode, or with the settings that last worked. i tried to turn it on normal mode but it wouldn't start up like that. then i started it up on the settings that last worked and it turned on, but it is running very slowly.

does that mean that the virus is still having an effect on my computer?

here is a new log:

Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:[list=1]

Close HiJackThis.

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Post a new HijackThis Log and the contents of smitfiles.txt by using Add Reply.

Let us know if any problems persist.
