Referred from here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic351569.html ~ OB

I'm back. After running the DoD version of Boot and Nuke, my drivers were still in place and I had a redirect on the first attempt at viewing weather.com, a site that has never failed to redirect me since I started having problems.

Here is the DDS log. I've also attached the ark.txt and gmer.txt files as instructed by the Preparation Guide. I've pulled out so much hair in the last two weeks, I need to go wig shopping. Here we go again!

A quick edit: I don't know if this is related or not but now YouTube crashes Firefox every time. I installed NoScipt, which helps but doesn't make living any easier.

Hello ,
And welcome.gif to the Bleeping Computer Malware Removal Forum
. My name is Elise and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

I will be working on your malware issues, this may or may not solve other issues you may have with your machine.

Please note that whatever repairs we make, are for fixing your computer problems only and by no means should be used on another computer.
  • The cleaning process is not instant. Logs can take some time to research, so please be patient with me. I know that you need your computer working as quickly as possible, and I will work hard to help see that happen.
  • Please reply using the Add/Reply button in the lower right hand corner of your screen. Do not start a new topic.
  • The logs that you post should be pasted directly into the reply. Only attach them if requested or if they do not fit into the post.
  • Unfortunately, if I do not hear back from you within 5 days, I will be forced to close your topic. If you still need help after I have closed your topic, send me or a moderator a personal message with the address of the thread or feel free to create a new one.
You may want to keep the link to this topic in your favorites. Alternatively, you can click the button at the top bar of this topic and Track this Topic, where you can choose email notifications. The topics you are tracking are shown here.
-----------------------------------------------------------

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

If you have already posted a log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Please download OTL from one of the following mirrors:
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the icon on your desktop.
  • Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  • Push the Quick Scan button.
  • Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
    • OTListIt.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extra.txt <-- Will be minimized

Please download Rootkit Unhooker and save it to your Desktop
  • Double-click on RKUnhookerLE to run it
  • Click the Report tab, then click Scan
  • Check Drivers, Stealth and uncheck the rest
  • Click OK
  • Wait until it's finished and then go to File > Save Report
  • Save the report to your Desktop
Copy the entire contents of the report and paste it in a reply here.

Note - you may get this warning it is ok, just ignore: "Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself!
It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?"

-------------------------------------------------------------
In the meantime please, do NOT install any new programs or update anything unless told to do so while we are fixing your problem

If you still need help, please include the following in your next reply
  • A detailed description of your problems
  • A new OTL log (don't forget extra.txt)
  • RKU log

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

regards, Elise

Hello Elise and thanks for the reply. Things have indeed changed in a week. I performed a low level format with DBAM again and installed Windows 98 on one partition, C: and XP Pro on another, E: I only use 98 for old games. I haven't even installed NIC drivers for it. I installed SP3 and all other available Microsoft updates. The only non-Microsoft things I've installed have been Mozilla Firefox and AVG antivirus. I'm still having redirect issues with Firefox and pop-unders with IE 8.

Hi again,

COMBOFIX
---------------
Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. (Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive.)
  • Double click on Combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, or if you are running Vista, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

regards, Elise

Elise,

I downloaded and ran Combofix as instructed. Browsing is still a nightmare and I no longer have the option of booting to '98.

Please reset your router and see if that resolves the redirect/popup issue.

Elise,

I've done that and no, it didn't help at all. I'll try again after the network gets less crowded. Also, I have no boot options now. There is no prompt to enter the bios, no option to choose which OS to boot to and no prompt to enter the recovery console that the instructions for combo fix said would be there. I need those options back. Did the combo fix log show anything? It would really help if you could explain the results of the logs to me. Maybe not in all of their gory detail, just if they showed which infection I have or if they're clean. One last question: is the recovery console that I downloaded similar to the one that comes with XP? Can I use it to make repairs if I can't get to the one that downloaded? I know it was there before the download. I've used it before.
Thanks again!

Hi, combofix did not show any problem. It downloads and installs microsofts recovery console. I'm pretty convinced the problem is with your router. We can easily check that with the following:

Please right click on your Internet Connection icon in the System Tray and select Status. In the Status window click the Options button.

Look under "this connection uses the following items" and highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). Click Properties.

On the General tab, make sure "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically" are both ticked.
On the Alternate Configuration tab, make sure "Automatic private IP address" is ticked.

Click OK to exit the Properties and OK to exit the other windows as well.

Now, click Start > Run and type cmd in the runbox.

A command window will open. Type ipconfig /flushdns and press enter.

Please run Notepad (start > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad) and copy and paste the text in the code box into a new file:
CODE
@echo off
(ipconfig /all
nslookup google.com
nslookup yahoo.com
ping -n 2 google.com
ping -n 2 yahoo.com
route print) >>Log1.txt
start notepad Log1.txt
del %0

Go to the File menu at the top of the Notepad and select Save as.
Select save in: desktop
Fill in File name: test.bat
Save as type: All file types (*.*)
Click save.
Close the Notepad.
Locate and double-click tast.bat on the desktop.
A notepad opens, copy and paste the content it (log1.txt) to your reply.

As for the problem with BIOS options and the boot options menu missing, that is very strange. However I suspect it is because XP is not the primary installed OS. However, BIOS options always should be visible.

regards, Elise

Elise,

I was able to get to the BIOS by hiting F2 at start-up, even though I recieved no prompt. Now the boot options display, only now it's for two seconds instead of giving me a countdown to select. That's workable I guess but I would rather have the countdown. Is there any way to get that back?

I only have a "Local Area Connections" icon in the system tray, not an "Internet Connections" icon. Right clicking it and selecting "Status" does not display the things you described. I found a setting in Network Connections/Local Area Networks/Properties to display or to not display that icon but I can't find that option under Internet Options or anywhere for that matter. Is there someplace else to find this information or is there a way to display the icon that I'm not aware of? I would like to get that information to you as quickly as possible.

Elise,

I'm sorry but I can't find it. I've included a screenshot to help describe what I'm seeing. I'm sorry it's so huge but I haven't installed a graphic editing program yet and I was at the mercy of MS Paint.

The large window in the background is from opening Network Connections. The left-hand window is from right-clicking and selecting Status. The Support tab lists the Address type, IP Address, Subnet Mask and the Default Gateway. The right-hand window is from selecting Properties. The Advanced tab just shows Widows Firewall settings. Am I missing something?

The boot options at startup only display if I enter the BIOS first, and now only for a split second instead of 2 seconds. If I don't enter the BIOS, the options are not displayed. I just get a blank screen until the black XP screen starts. I'm pretty sure this behavior is from downloading the repair console or from running ComboFix and not from XP not being the primary OS. It all worked seamlessly before.

Edit: Never mind. I found it under TCP/IP properties. Everything is checked as it should be. I'll have the results momentarily.

Can you please tell me what type of router you have and how you did reset it?

Elise,

It's a DLink DIR-615. Since my last post, I reset the router again, (paper clip in the little hole on the back), and everything seems fine so far. Weather.com, which has never failed to redirect me since this problem occured, is holding steady. We may have this thing licked. Now, to test my wife's laptop, which has redirection problems of its own. Maybe I'll wait until I hear back from you. Do I risk becoming infected again if her computer is infected? It runs Vista.

I need to address this boot option problem. Is that a subject for a different section of the forum? If so, which section?

On a personal note, thanks for all of your great help Elise. I would have never been able to do this by myself. I really appreciate this website and all of you wonderful people who have helped me. You guys rule!

If your wifes laptop is still having issues after the router reset best is to keep it isolated and start a separate topic for it (just follow the Preparation Guide).

As for the boot issue, we should be able to figure that out. smile.gif

Can you let me know when the problem with Win98 no longer accessible started?

As for the time out of 2 seconds, we can easily change that.

regards, Elise
