Hello,

I believe I have some kind of virus. I have backed up all of my files onto an external drive, and used the factory restore disk to try to take my computer "back in time" to remove the problem. This seems to have probably failed though, and I say that because the very diagnostic tools this board uses have trouble working on my computer. I have not tried any other fixes to this problem. I ran DDS and it logged properly, but HijackThis gave an error that it was "denied access to the Hosts file". For this reason, it would not create a log in Notepad. I took screenshots of the error message and of the log in the HijackThis window if they would be helpful to you.

More troubling is that I attempted to run GMER as your preparation guide suggested, and many of the checkboxes could not be selected. Only the Services, Registry, Files, and ADS boxes can be checked; the rest are blank and grayed out. With my little computer knowledge, it feels like whatever is in my computer is subverting attempts to diagnose it.

Thank you for whatever help you can offer. Here is my DDS log:

Elise, thank you for getting back to me. I will describe my problem in depth here and add my logs as you requested in the next reply. I contracted whatever this is when I unwisely clicked on a shortened URL (AdFly) and could suddenly hear my computer go into overdrive. I felt pretty sure I had a problem then. Later that night, I came home and backed up my important files on an external drive and tried to use my system restore disk to outsmart whatever was on my computer. Unfortunately, the external drive was connected to the computer when I was hit.

There have been almost no symptoms of the problem since I restored, but I know it's there. As I said in my original post, GMER and HijackThis won't work. Also, several gigs of HD space have been mysteriously taken up. The number has stopped growing; but about 5-6 gigs are gone.

1. Can the data from my external HD be rescued safely?
2. I can't detect the secondary HD inside the computer after the restore, is that virus-related? The data on it was not vital.

OK, logs coming up.

Okay, I'll wait for the logs and then we see further. As a general note, it is possible you backed up infected files. Did you try to reinstall the drivers for the drive?

regards, Elise

Did you try to reinstall the drivers for the drive?

That's probably the issue, but I'm not sure how to do that.

Hello again,

MALWAREBYTES ANTIMALWARE
-------------------------------------------
Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link 1
alternate download link 2

MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you. Temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the definition updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform Full Scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply. Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows MBAM's database version and your operating system.
  • Exit MBAM when done.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be asked to reboot your computer so MBAM can proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

regards, Elise

Nothing here that points at malware. Several gigs of space may easily be occupied by System Restore.

OTL
-----
  1. Please download OTL from one of the following mirrors:
  2. Save it to your desktop.
  3. Double click on the icon on your desktop.
  4. Copy and Paste the following code into the textbox. Do not include the word "Code"
    CODE
    /md5start
    explorer.exe
    wininit.exe
    hlp.dat
    /md5stop
    %systemroot%\system32\*.dll /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\Tasks\*.job /lockedfiles
  5. Click the NONE button and then Push
  6. A report will open. Copy and Paste that report in your next reply.

regards, Elise

"# Click the NONE button and then Push RUN"

Elise, which None button do you mean? There are several on the OTL menu. Thanks!

EDIT: I have run OTL, but I will run it again based on how you respond. Also, what might be the cause of some of these malware utilities not running? I felt sure I had something, considering how they seemed to be "blocked" from working.

The NONE button in the top left corner (the others are none check boxes, not buttons). smile.gif

At this point, which security programs are not working? If you are referring to RKU, this is not 64 bit compatible and HJT can have problems with that as well.

Thanks Elise, I was referring to GMER, HJT, and RKUnhooker all not working. But I do have 64-bit Windows 7, so maybe that is the reason.

The reason I was concerned about the HD space that was being taken up was because that number was increasing over the last few days when I plugged the computer into the Internet. I started with 906 GB free immediately after recovery, and now have 898 GB free, without installing or downloading anything besides Firefox, Avast, and Comodo. I know plugging in your computer when you suspect an infection isn't terribly smart, but having already removed my important files I didn't see how much damage I could really do.

That is all looking okay. smile.gif

The decrease in space is not huge and I bet it was either caused by system restore or something like windows updates downloading stuff.

ESET ONLINE SCANNER
----------------------------
I'd like us to scan your machine with ESET OnlineScan
  1. Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESET OnlineScan
  2. Click the button.
  3. For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    1. Click on to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    2. Double click on the icon on your desktop.
  4. Check
  5. Click the button.
  6. Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  7. Check
  8. Push the Start button.
  9. ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  10. When the scan completes, push
  11. Push , and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
Note - when ESET doesn't find any threats, no report will be created.
  12. Push the button.
  13. Push
