Hello - I'm getting repeated messages from Norton security about intrusion attempts, risk name HTTP Tidserv Request.

The latest message includes: "The attack was resulted from \DEVICE\HARDDISKVOLUME1\PROGRAM FILES\INTERNET EXPLORER\IEXPLORE.EXE."

Appreciate any help you can provide. Here's the DDS file:

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit scanner. Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

I hate to give you bad news but one or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan.

Backdoor Trojans are the most dangerous and most widespread type of Trojan. Backdoor Trojans provide the author or "master" of the Trojan with remote "administration" of victim machines. Unlike legitimate remote administration utilities, they install, launch and run invisibly, without the consent or knowledge of the user. Once installed, backdoor Trojans can be instructed to send, receive, execute and delete files, harvest confidential data from the computer, log activity on the computer and more.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.
In addition to the backdoor Trojan that has been identified, your computer is afflicted with multiple other infections. Although we can make an attempt to clean this machine, we cannot guarantee that it will be secure afterwards. Your best and safest course of action is a reformat and reinstallation of the Windows operating system.

If you do decide to attempt cleaning rather than a reformat, do understand that although we may be able to remove all known visible malware, we cannot guarantee that unknown and unseen malware will have been removed, nor will your system be restored to its pre-infection state. We cannot remedy unknown changes the malware may likely have made in order to allow itself access, nor can we repair the damages it may possibly have caused to vital system files.

Please note that even if we should be successful in removing these infections from your system, it is quite possible that the changes made to the system by the malware may impact negatively on your computer during the removal process. In short, your system may never regain its former stability or its full functionality without a reformat.

Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?

When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

Should you have any questions, please feel free to ask.
Please let us know what you have decided to do in your next post.

Best Regards,
oneof4.

Thanks, I'll reformat and re-install Windows XP. Can you point me to a step-by-step guide?

Hello, :)

Can you point me to a step-by-step guide?

Yes, try this one: "http://michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html"

Also, in case you want to back up your data:

Note that the files with the following extensions should not be backed up:
.exe
.scr
.htm
.html
.xml
.zip
.rar
.asp
.php

Good Luck to you! :thumbup2:

Best Regards,
oneof4.

In case you are having second thoughts on wiping everything out and starting from scratch, I believe we have the solution to getting rid of the infections that are plaguing you...If you want to give it a try.

Best Regards,
oneof4.

Hello tamben, :)

Sure, I'd like to try before starting from scratch. Thanks!

Alright! :thumbsup::cool:

Let's get going then...

We will begin with ComboFix.exe. Please visit the following webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool: (If you cannot get to the website from your infected machine, you will need to use a "clean" machine and download ComboFix to a flash drive.)
Once downloaded, right-click on the ComboFix.exe file and choose Rename; then rename it to "TDLBGone.exe".

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

* Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Also, be sure to allow it to install Recovery Console when prompted (This could be VERY useful if the infection is deeply spread).

Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply for further review.

Best Regards,
oneof4.

Hi tamben, things are beginning to look much better. :thumbup2:

Download TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.

  • Extract the file and run it.
  • Once completed it will create a log in the root directory (usually C:\).
  • Please post the contents of that log in your next reply.

Then re-run GMER again (Make sure anti-virus & firewall are "disabled", and also that CD Emulation has not been re-enabled with DeFogger)

Things I need to see in your next reply:
  • TDSSKiller log
  • Gmer log
  • How are things running, are you still being redirected?

Best Regards,
oneof4.

Here is the TDSSKiller log. I am having trouble creating a GMER log. The scan runs for hours and when I try to save, my computer freezes.

The netbook seems to be running fine. No redirects of anything of that nature. Thanks!

Hello tamben, :)

OK, since GMER wants to be stubborn, let's try this:

Scan With RKUnHooker

  • Please Download Rootkit Unhooker Save it to your desktop.
  • Now double-click on RKUnhookerLE.exe to run it.
  • Click the Report tab, then click Scan.
  • Check (Tick) Drivers, Stealth,. Uncheck the rest. then Click OK.
  • Wait till the scanner has finished and then click File, Save Report.
  • Save the report somewhere where you can find it. Click Close.
Copy the entire contents of the report and paste it in a reply here.

Note** you may get this warning it is ok,

"Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself!
It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?"

"just click on Cancel, then Accept".

Next, Please visit the online Jotti Virus Scanner Posted Image<--link
  • Copy and paste the following filepath in the box:

    C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\iaStor.sys

  • Click on the Posted Image button.
The scanner will check the file with various AV companies.
  • Copy and paste the results box into a reply to this thread.

Download MBRCheck to your Desktop.
Double-Click on the downloaded MBRCheck.exe and allow it to run.
Once finished, it will save a log file to your desktop. Copy and paste that log file in your next reply.

Things I need to see in your next reply:

  • RKUnhooker Log
  • Jotti Scan Log
  • MBRCheck Log

Best Regards,
oneof4.
