I am getting random web pages . One was dailyconsumerguide.com. I scanned with ad-aware and now it catches web sites (in normal mode, not safe mode) - Ad-watch Live! has blocked svchost.exe from connecting to a malicious website. I have also scanned with malwarebytes and spybot in both regular and safe mode and let those clean everything they found.

My IE9 won't work in normal mode (I'm in safe mode hoping I can get this posted). Sometimes if I reboot enough, I can get it to work for a few minutes.

I am also getting blue screens and while trying to do the gmer, I was never able to complete. The first time it got pretty far - in the last half of the program files. That bsod said IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL. I tried again and didn't get nearly as far and bsod had odexv.sys and then in the last few hours I had 2 more bsod with no specific message I could see in the short time it was up.

Sorry. Never could get GMER to run - GMER.exe has stopped working. I could try in safe mode if that would help.

Thanks for your help

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit scanner. Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

I keep getting the window " Host process for Windows stopped working and was closed". I have random web pages pop up, sometimes I get Ad-watch Live! has blocked svchost.exe from connecting to a malicious website and then an IP address (different each time).
I have AVG pro and tried to run the bootkit scan - bsod with no messages.
IE9 works after a shut down and turn back on for a while. Eventually it hangs, but sometimes if you leave it a LONG time, it will release.

Right now I have the host process window minimized, but the save of Attach.txt is saying Not Responding. I hope if I wait long enough, it will go on. Save of DDS.txt didn't do anything. Attach.txt finally saved, now DDS.txt is not responding. Freed up sooner. Every step takes about 30 seconds.

I am writing this from a different computer. GMER has been running for 9 hours and I can't post on the computer with the problems anymore. I will post the GMER log when I can. When I posted the previous reply and closed EI9, the GMER scan seemed to get faster

When I shut down after the GMER post last night I got bsod with no errors at top or bottom. When I turned it back on this morning, I got "setting personal settings" which never goes away, so restarted. A couple of "blocked svchost from connecting to malicious website" and then consumerweeklyreport.com popped up.

Hello, momgbb.
My name is etavares and I will be helping you with this log.

Here are some guidelines to ensure we are able to get your machine back under your control.

  • Please do not run any unsupervised scans, fixes, etc. We can work against each other and end up in a worse place.
  • Please subscribe to this topic if you have not already done so. Please check back just in case, as the email system can fail at times.
  • Just because your machine is running better does not mean it is completely cleaned. Please wait for the 'all clear' from me to say when we are done.
  • Please reply within 3 days to be fair to other people asking for help.
  • When in doubt, please stop and ask first. There's no harm in asking questions!

Step 1

Scan With RKUnHooker

  • Please Rootkit Unhooker and save it to your desktop.
  • Now double-click on RKUnhookerLE.exe to run it.
  • Click the Report tab, then click Scan.
  • Check (Tick) Drivers, Stealth. Uncheck the rest. then Click OK.
  • Wait till the scanner has finished and then click File, Save Report.
  • Save the report somewhere where you can find it. Click Close.

Copy the entire contents of the report and paste it in a reply here.

Note** you may get this warning it is ok, just ignore

"Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself!
It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?"

Step 2

Please download MBRCheck by ad_13 and save it to your desktop.

Double-click to run. A window will pop up. If it says 'non-standard' or 'infected' MBR code detected, please type 3 for Exit for now and press Enter.

It will save a logfile on your desktop that starts with MBR, then has the date, etc. Please copy and paste the contents of that log in your reply.

etavares

If I don't respond within 2 days, please feel free to PM me.
Please don't ask for help via PM. The forums are there for a reason. Please post in the forums so others may benefit as well.

I have 2 users on this computer - Kindles, which is the one I was using, and Admin, which I didn't use. Now Kindles doesn't work - I get "Microsoft Security Essentials Alert unknowsn Win32 Trojan and then bsod. I'm able to get some stuff done under the Admin user.

Hello, momgbb.
Backdoor Warning
One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can still clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. Let me know what you decide to do. If you do decide to proceed, please continue with the fix below.

Step 1

Next, please download ComboFix from one of these locations:
* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop as etavaresCF.exe
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. (Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive.)
  • Double click on etavaresCF.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply, along with any symptoms that are present after it runs.

It was running along and had restored c:\windows\system32\wininit.exe successfully and had been running for over 40 minutes.

I did a very dumb thing and clicked on the x in the top right hand corner - trying to make sure the focus was on that box.

Now I have c: under etavaresCF.exe. What should I do?

Is Combofix stuck? If so, try rebooting. It may not boot, but we can recover if needed via the recovery console.

No. Combofix isn't stuck. It just ended when I clicked on the X in the top right corner. I rebooted then.

Everything is working better - still some blocking of sites by Adaware - "Adaware Live has blocked svchost.exe from connecting to a malicious website" and then it has an IP adddress. I can't open internet explorer from an icon on my desktop, but if I find a link on an e-mail it opens IE right up.

I still have the extra folder/file(?) when I look in Windows explorer. See attached screen print. I can't tell if the Attach is working. There is a folder/file(?) under c: - etavaresCF.exe and it has a different icon. Instead of the usual yellow folder icon, it has a blue computer icon, but is listed in the middle of the folders under C:

Before Combofix, if I tried to run a rootkit scan in AVG, I immediately got a bsod, but now it works fine.

We decided to go with the clean of my drive. I changed the passwords on another computer and I reconcile my accounts twice week - always have.

I don't have a password on my User signon to Vista - does that make any difference?

Thanks for your help.

No, the password for the user signon isn't a big deal. That folder is normal and would have been removed at the end when were were done removing the malware. Do you want to continue cleaning up before you backup and reformat? Or do you have a good backup and are prepared to reformat?
