Hello there,
This is my first post. I believe I have a virus issue - Win32/Alureon.A exists on my PC. I understand that this may be responsible for the re-direction issues I am experiencing when using Google. What happens is that I select a particular website from the returned Google search list and Google redirects me to another website.

In trying to fix this I went to windows update to make sure I was up to date. I was unable to manually execute Windows Update. Then I realised that I had not been getting the relevant updates.

I then activated Windows Defender. I had it turned off as I use the AVG Anti Virus software protection (free version). I then did a scan using a Microsoft product "something scanner" which took hours to run. It did identify the presence of Virus:Win32/Alureon.A . When I looked this up I could see it was related to my "re-direction issues" with Google.

I am unable to get the Windows update to work properly. The windows system advised me that some infected files, as a result of the Virus:Win32/Alureon.A, could not be fixed.

As a result of my inability to fix the problems, I went searching for answers on various web forums. I noticed on "Bleeping Computer"a number of users were experiencing the "re-direction issue" when using Google.

So here I am hoping that you will be able to help me solve my PC problems.

My operating system is Windows XP Home Edition SP3 and my browser is Internet Explorer Version 7.0.5730.13

Kind Regards
Ollie66

Hello Gringo,

Thanks so much for taking time out to help me with my issues. I really appreciate it. I meant to mention that I am using AVG (free version) for antivirus, malware, email scanning etc. I was not sure how to disable AVG so I left it running. It does not seem to have interfered with the programs you asked me to run. I will let you be the judge of that though.

I believe I have done as you have asked. I have not zipped the files as they are very small in size the largest being 29k.

In terms of the Defogger I did not receive any error messages. I have left my drivers disabled.

I have attached the files you required. I am not used to this "attachment process". Are you able to access the attachments above.

Kind Regards
Ollie66

Hello

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links.
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"
In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

Gringo

Hello Gringo,
I have done as you have asked. The Combo Log report is below.
My PC appears to be much faster. Unfortunately I experienced the "re-direction issue" on my first use of google. But I must say it was much faster in redirecting me!

I have not re-enabled the drivers. I have turned back on my antivirus AVG (9.0) prior to using the internet. My firewall (Sunbelt Software) did not restart on boot up. I cannot get it to restart at the moment

The Combofix went well. It executed without issues apart from what you described. For example it downloaded the XP Console and rebooted by itself. It did not come up with any "nasty" messages.

Perhaps I did not have all the software turned off. I think the firewall was still on. Also Smart Defrag.

Thanks so much for your interest. I await your response.

Kind regards
Ollie66

Hello

But I must say it was much faster in redirecting me!
at least it is improving!! - That did make me laugh - thanks

we are going to check the router

Create and Run Batch File
Open Notepad and copy/paste the entire contents of the codebox below, into Notepad:
CODE
@echo off
>Log1.txt (
ipconfig /all
nslookup google.com
nslookup yahoo.com
ping -n 2 google.com
ping -n 2 yahoo.com
route print
)
start Log1.txt
del %0
Save this as router.bat Choose to Save type as - All Files and where to save - Desktop - then close the Notepad file.

It should look like this: <--XP
Double-click on router.bat to run it. it will open notepad when done please post back the results

Hello Gringo,

Well I am glad you enjoyed my sense of humour.

The router check ran well and I have pasted the log below.

I have a confession to make. Yesterday I was trying to send 19 photos over to my son's school but the email (9 Meg - 3meg x 3) stayed unsent in the Outbox. My whole computer system slowed up and I did not know why. I became pretty desperate (and was not rational) and eventually re-ran Combofix. Please forgive me. The re-run did not solve the problem. My desperation increased as I was not able to get through to see what you had posted. Only minutes ago the 3M email (cut out the copy emails 2 x 3m) was sent off and I have my PC back. My view of the problem now is that the school's computer was not in receiving mode (maintenance on the weekend I guess). My PC continuously tried to send the 3M email and in doing so tied up the resources of my PC for the entire day. In the circumstances I have pasted below the results of my misdemeanor, that is the log from the Combofix re-run.

Kind regards

Ollie66

Hello Gringo,

I meant to mention that the Firewall Icon (Sunbelt Software) does not display. I tried to start the firewall from the Start Menu but with no effect.

I note that the Firewall is enabled although I cannot see the Icon. I say this because in the Combo Fix log (re-run) the following line occurs

FW: Sunbelt Personal Firewall *enabled* {BFD080F6-3BF0-40E1-9507-9CA969C35870}

One question - Is it OK to run Windows Update? I have not tried it yet.

I really do appreciate your assistance.

Kind Regards
Ollie66.

Resetting Router

Letís try to reset the router to its default configuration.
  • This can be done by inserting something tiny like a paper clip end or pencil tip into a small hole labeled "reset" located on the back of the router.
  • Press and hold down the small button inside until the lights on the front of the router blink off and then on again (usually about 10 seconds).
  • If you donít know the router's default password, you can look it up. Here
  • You also need to reconfigure any security settings you had in place prior to the reset.
  • You may also need to consult with your Internet service provider to find out which DNS servers your network should be using or you can use OpenDNS
Note: After resetting your router, it is important to set a non-default password, and if possible, username, on the router. This will assist in eliminating the possibility of the router being hijacked again.

flush the DNS:

Now lets flush the DNS on the computer:
  • click on Start
  • select run
  • enter cmd and hit enter
  • a black window will open.
  • please enter the following text into that window and hit enter:
      ipconfig /flushdns

Now lets check the router again

Create and Run Batch File
Open Notepad and copy/paste the entire contents of the codebox below, into Notepad:
CODE
@echo off
>Log1.txt (
ipconfig /all
nslookup google.com
nslookup yahoo.com
ping -n 2 google.com
ping -n 2 yahoo.com
route print
)
start Log1.txt
del %0
Save this as router.bat Choose to Save type as - All Files and where to save - Desktop - then close the Notepad file.

It should look like this: <--XP
Double-click on router.bat to run it. it will open notepad when done please post back the results

Hello Gringo,

Unfortunately I am still being rediredted. When you select the site in Goole, that is enter, google goes off and does its thing. But then you hear a click and that is when you are redirected. The word Redirecting is actually displayed. What I do to counter this is to hit backwards on the browser and if I am quick I am returned to the Google listing. I then immediately click on the same site again and this then goes directly to the site.

If I go to my favorites and select a site directly, I go to that site and I am not redirected.

I am not sure if any of my comments help.

I appreciate your help.

Kind regards
Ollie66
