Hello. Please help me with my desktop if it is possible.

My desktop computer has Windows XP service pack 3. The problem began on 5/14/2010 when I got the pop-ups of Trojan.FakeAV. I had Norton Internet Security 2009 up to date at the time, Spybot, and Adaware. The Norton scan removed FakeAV I think, because the pop-ups stopped, but then Norton kept warning that it was blocking intrusion attempts. This happened while using FireFox or Explorer while online and occasionally while not browsing but still connected. Google Chrome quit working and is unable to load any web page, even one saved to the hard drive, but I can still go in the options and things. Norton and Spybot did not find anything more at that time. I DLed Malwarebytes and it found Rootkit.agent and Trojan.Agent and removed them, but the problem did not stop.

In June I disconnected the computer from the internet and used mainly my laptop from then on. I only used the desktop offline to do some scanning, printing pictures, and listening to music. Then I got busy and there were many family events and I did not get back to working with the desktop until the last half of September. When I tried to use it online the browsers would not find the webpages as if there was no connection, but there was a connection. Norton is the only thing that can sometimes use the connection. In safemode, however, both browsers worked online. Maybe it is firewall related or related to the infections? My laptop worked using the same ethernet cable and modem, so I do not think they are the problem. The scans of Norton and Malware did not find anything more, so I DLed SuperAntispyware on 9/19 and it found Trojan.Hugipon and cookies which I removed but nothing was fixed and the scans did not find anymore. Other than the infections, online, and browser issues there seem to be no other problems. I am not sure what to do next. I am sorry if I took too long to deal with this properly, but it could not be helped. I would greatly appreciate any help. Thanks.

Here is the DDS log text from yesterday below and the attached DDS and GMER ark. The GMER had a strange error at the end so I hope it completed. It ran for hours and then I checked back and there was an error of could not write to C Drive and there was a path but I did not copy it and it popped up several times after closing it, some times with different paths. I was able to save with the save button, however, so I hope it is correct.

Greetings

One or more of the identified infections is Known as a Backdoor Trojan. - TDSS rootkit <--please read

What this virus does do.
QUOTE
Functionality
The functionality that the Trojan exhibits implies that it has been designed with profit-making as its primary objective. Making money from the Web typically involves generating Web traffic, installing pay-per-install software and also by generating sales leads for other Web sites and services of a dubious nature. It tries to achieve its objective by employing an array of techniques to try and make the user participate in these income-generating activities.

What the virus can do.
QUOTE
Backdoor.Tidserv is a Trojan horse that uses an advanced rootkit to hide itself. It also displays advertisements, redirects user search results, and opens a back door on the compromised computer.

This "could" allow hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can clean this machine but I cannot guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. "If you would like to continue, then follow the steps below, otherwise please let me know"

I Would like you to do the following.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links.
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"
In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

Gringo

I decided to try to use combofix to remove the problems. It seems to have worked and removed them. There were no more messages yet from Norton warning that an intrusion was blocked. The Norton firewall was still blocking FireFox though, so I reset the firewall settings to the defaults and that seems to have worked. The Google Chrome works again too. The desktop seems to be working ok now but I have only tried it for about 2 hours. I think I will be going to bed for the night. What should I do next?

Attached is the combofix log.

Greetings

Good That cleaned up some bad guys but I see some other stuff that we need to go after, so I want you to run this custom script for me.

:Run CFScript:

Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the box into the window:

CODE
RenV::
c:\program files\Ahead\Nero BackItUp\nbj .exe
c:\program files\Ahead\Nero PhotoShow\data\Xtras\mssysmgr .exe
c:\program files\Analog Devices\SoundMAX\drvlsnr .exe
c:\program files\Analog Devices\SoundMAX\smtray .exe
c:\program files\Common Files\Java\Java Update\jusched .exe
c:\program files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched .exe
c:\program files\Compaq\Easy Access Button Support\starteak .exe
c:\program files\Compaq\SetRefresh\setrefresh .exe
c:\program files\Google\GoogleToolbarNotifier\googletoolbarnotifier .exe
c:\program files\Hewlett-Packard\HP Share-to-Web\hpgs2wnd .exe
c:\program files\ltmoh\ltmoh .exe
c:\program files\Messenger\msmsgs .exe
c:\program files\PDF Complete\pdfsty .exe
c:\program files\QuickTime\qttask .exe
c:\program files\Spybot - Search & Destroy\teatimer .exe
c:\windows\system32\ctfmon .exe
c:\windows\system32\hkcmd .exe
c:\windows\system32\igfxtray .exe
c:\windows\system32\nerocheck .exe
c:\windows\system32\spool\drivers\w32x86\3\hpztsb06 .exe

Driver::
PDIDRV

Save it to your desktop as CFScript.txt

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe

This will let ComboFix run again.
Restart if you have to.
Save the produced logfile to your desktop.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

[b]"information and logs"
In your next post I need the following
    1. report from Combofix
    2. let me know of any problems you may have had
    3. How is the computer doing now after running the script?

Ok. I have run the script in combofix. When combofix restarted, at the point of logging off I got an error message of the following

"SAS window: winlogon.exe - Unable To Locate Component
This application has failed to start because RFHelper.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem."

I clicked ok and the computer finished restarting and combofix finished. I noticed that some icons have returned in the tray that used to be there but were not there after the infection. These include: SoundMAX, V.92 Modem on Hold App, HP Easy Access Keyboard, and QuickTime. I have not gotten the same error again from winlogon.exe but I got another one later when clicking to remove a USB stick

"Nero Photo Show Elite: mssysmgr.exe - Unable To Locate Component
This application has failed to start because RFHelper.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem."

I was not trying to use that program at the time.

Norton's Autoprotect detected Backdoor.Tidserv.l!inf but could do nothing about it.

Attached is the combofix log

Hello

:P2P Warning!:

IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Person to Person) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

Please note that as long as you are using any form of Peer-to-Peer networking and downloading files from non-documented sources, you can expect infestations of malware to occur
Once upon a time, P2P file sharing was fairly safe. That is no longer true. P2P programs form a direct conduit on to your computer, their security measures are easily circumvented and malware writers are increasingly exploiting them to spread their wares on to your computer. Further to that, if your P2P program is not configured correctly, your computer may be sharing more files than you realise. There have been cases where people's passwords, address books and other personal, private, and financial details have been exposed to a file sharing network by a badly configured program.

Please read these short reports on the dangers of peer-2-peer programs and file sharing.

FBI Cyber Education Letter
File sharing infects 500,000 computers

These logs are looking alot better. But we still have some work to do.

Please print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file. It will make it easier for you to follow the instructions and complete all of the necessary steps..

uninstall some programs

1. click on start
2. then go to settings
3. after that you need control panel
4. look for the icon add/remove programs
click on the following programs

Adobe Reader 7.1.0
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11
Java™ 6 Update 19<--do not remove
Java™ 6 Update 2
Java™ 6 Update 3
Java™ 6 Update 5
Java™ 6 Update 7
Java™ SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1
Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.4
Viewpoint Media Player
WeatherBug

and click on remove

Update Adobe Reader

Recently there have been vunerabilities detected in older versions of Adobe Reader. It is strongly suggested that you update to the current version.

You can download it from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
After installing the latest Adobe Reader, uninstall all previous versions.
If you already have Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition installed or do not wish to have it installed UNcheck the box which says Also Download Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition.

If you don't like Adobe Reader (53 MB), you can download Foxit PDF Reader(7 MB) from here. It's a much smaller file to download and uses a lot less resources than Adobe Reader.

Note: When installing FoxitReader, be carefull not to install anything to do with AskBar.
[/list]
Your Java is out of date.

It can be updated by the Java control panel
  • click on Start-> Control Panel (Classic View)-> Java (looks like a coffee cup) -> Update Tab -> Update Now.
  • An update should begin;
  • follow the prompts

Clear your Java Cache

  • click on Start-> Control Panel (Classic View)-> Java (looks like a coffee cup)
    • On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button.
    • Next, click on the Delete Files button
    • There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH Checked
      Applications and Applets
      Trace and Log Files
  • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
  • Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Window
  • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

TFC(Temp File Cleaner):

  • Please download TFC to your desktop,
  • Save any unsaved work. TFC will close all open application windows.
  • Double-click TFC.exe to run the program.
  • If prompted, click "Yes" to reboot.
Note: Save your work. TFC will automatically close any open programs, let it run uninterrupted. It shouldn't take longer take a couple of minutes, and may only take a few seconds. Only if needed will you be prompted to reboot.

: Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware :

  • I would like you to rerun MBAM
  • Double-click mbam icon
  • go to the update tab at the top
  • click on check for updates
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is Checked (ticked) except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder and click on Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply
  • If you accidently close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this:
  • C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

  • Go Here to download HijackThis Installer
  • Save HijackThis Installer to your desktop.

  • Click on Install.
  • It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
  • Once installed it will launch Hijackthis.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Click on Edit > Select All then click on Edit > Copy to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT use the AnalyseThis button its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
  • DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following

  • Log From MBAM
  • report from Hijackthis
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

Hello. I removed the old java and other things, updated java, and used the TFC and did the scans. I am not sure if got the viewpoint media player completely removed because it was not listed in add/remove. I deleted its folder when I found it because there was no uninstall there, so I think it is gone.
The TFC froze during the restart and did not finish the restart. I had to hold the power button down and then turn the desktop back on. It removed most of the temp files it seems because it only found 1mb the next time. I went with the Foxit Reader instead of Adobe Reader and I really like it so far. It opens pdfs much faster than Adobe. I still get the same error about the mssysmgr.exe when I use my USB stick sometimes, but not always if I have already used it and removed it at least once before during the same login.

Here is the Malwarebytes log from the Quick Scan. It seems to not have found anything.

Greetings

These logs are looking very good, we are almost done!!! Just one more scan to go.

:Remove unneeded startup entries:

This part of the fix is purely optional
These are programs that start up when you turn on your computer but don't need to be, any of these programs you can click on their icons (or start from the control panel) and start the program when you need it. By stopping these programs you will boot up faster and your computer will work faster.

  • Run HijackThis
  • Click on the Scan button
  • Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present):

    • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IgfxTray] C:\WINDOWS\System32\igfxtray.exe
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Smapp] C:\Program Files\Analog Devices\SoundMAX\SMTray.exe

Hi. I may not get to work on this for some days. Some relatives are coming over soon and then we are going on a trip. So I may not get to work on this until Monday the 25 or Tuesday the 26. Sorry to work so slowly on it. Thank you for all your help so far and glad to see we are close to done and that it has gone well so far.
