hi
I have just noticed a file which i have never seen before and i dont know what it is or if it is harmful... it is now called ydropper1_6uk.exe but in the details it says previous name was ystub.exe.
the details say it is a file belonging to Yahoo. if you could tell me what it is and whether or not it is harmful i would be most grateful! posted my hjt log incase anything shows up in there.
another strange thing is that recently my dvd drive has been half opening/closing randomly when im not anywher near it, and sometimes it just stops half out and wont do anything. dont know if these things are connected?
thanks!

It looks bad to me!

Click Here to do a Panda online scan
  • If it asks you install active x controls click Yes
  • if a box comes up telling you to install the program also click Yes
  • Make sure you tick Disinfect automatically under Scan Options
  • complete the scan and post the log that you can save afterwards in the same way you did the HJT log.
  • It is normal for it to take a reasonable time to complete

Download WinPFind!
  • Extract WinPFind.zip to your c:\ folder.
  • Reboot your computer into Safe Mode
  • Then open c:\WinPFind and double-click on WinPFind.exe.
  • When the program is open, click on the Start Scan button to start scanning your computer.
  • Be patient as this scan may take a while. When it is done, it will show a log and tell you the scan is completed.
  • Reboot your computer back to normal mode and and post the contents of c:\WinPFind\WinPFind.txt as a reply to this topic.

I dont know whats the matter with me but i cant get my computer in safe mode! i pressed f8 like i normally would for the boot menu but it just gives me a list of boot sources... cd, floppy etc
i went to windows help and tried to follow the instructions there but it tells me to 'wait for the message asking which operating system to use', and i dont get that message!

when my comp is loading it has started making a hell of a racket, as if its reading a cd only 10 times louder, longer and there are no disks in! seems to be getting worse the last couple of days

edit: have managed to get into the boot menu but when i get to 'choose an operating system', both options are the same (windows xp home edition) , and F8 for advanced startup, which is the one i need, doesnt do anything, and i cant arrow up or down the options.

i couldnt find it, but its turned up in the recycle bin... i have recently deleted an old zipped limewire file which i never bothered unzipping, is it possible it had something to do with that and so has gone to the recycle bin with it?
i also ran ewido security suite which i think was linked to me on this site a couple of months ago, and that got rid of a few suspect things for me, including a few which had something to do with starware i think.

Well, i would imagine that either ewido got it, or it went when you deleted that zip - now empty your recylce bin!

How's everything running?

David

emptied

most other stuff seems to be ok, think i need a new fan cos i can deafen half the country when my pc is loading, and the network is a bit naff, but all in all much better.

dvd drive has stopped opening and closing by itself, at least for the time being, so not sure what that was all about, but maybe it was just bad timing that all these things happened at once!!

thanks!!

Now turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn System Restore back on and create a restore point.

To create a restore point:

Single-click Start and point to All Programs.
Mouse over Accessories, then System Tools, and select System Restore. In the System Restore wizard, select the box next the text labeled "Create a restore point" and click the Next button.
Type a description for your new restore point. Something like "After trojan/spyware cleanup". Click Create and you're done.
