Hi there

Recently my pc started to show signs of a redirect virus internet explorer was used (I use google chrome more often, but as it is a family shared computer, internet explorer is generally the most used internet browser). Soon after, Malwarebytes (the free version) would not open and AVG no longer showed its icon on the bottom right hand corner and then wouldn't start at all, as well as an error report saying 'Generic Host Process for Win32 Service has encountered a problem and needs to close' coming up every time the computer starts.
After digging around a little bit I renamed both AVG.exe and the Malwarebyte.exe which allowed me to scan, find and remove two 'Trojan horse Generic19.AGYV' and two 'Trojan horse Generic2_c.CAHA'.
An anti root-kit scan through avg was also done. I have also run a Webroot Spy Sweeper scan which picked up nothing.
I have tried to run spybot search and destroy yet that does not start up. Spybot does, however, ask me if i would like to deny or allow a value change to 'C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe' to which i have been denying.
The for the pc is Windows XP.

I am unsure of what to do next to help rid my computer of whatever is stopping the startup of av software etc.
Any help or information would be greatly appreciated .

Below is a log file from hijackthis which I ran recently which will hopefully help and following that is the DDS report.

I was unable to run GMER as when I try to run the renamed .exe my computer blue screened with the message "a problem has been detected and windows has been shutdown to prevent damage" followed with 'BAD_POOL_HEADER' underneath.
This message then told me to restart the computer if it was the first time it had appeared.

Thanks heaps for your time

Hello and Welcome to the forums!

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Somethings to remember while we are working together.
  1. Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
  2. Please Do not Attach logs or put in code boxes.
  3. Tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
  4. Tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
  5. Do not run anything while running a fix.

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. By doing this and then choosing Immediate E-Mail notification and then clicking on Proceed you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

In order for me to see the status of the infection I will need a new set of logs to start with.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

    • Double-Click on dds.scr and a command window will appear. This is normal.
    • Shortly after two logs will appear:
      • DDS.txt

Greetings

One or more of the identified infections is Known as a Backdoor Trojan. - TDSS rootkit <--please read

What this virus does do.
QUOTE
Functionality
The functionality that the Trojan exhibits implies that it has been designed with profit-making as its primary objective. Making money from the Web typically involves generating Web traffic, installing pay-per-install software and also by generating sales leads for other Web sites and services of a dubious nature. It tries to achieve its objective by employing an array of techniques to try and make the user participate in these income-generating activities.

What the virus can do.
QUOTE
Backdoor.Tidserv is a Trojan horse that uses an advanced rootkit to hide itself. It also displays advertisements, redirects user search results, and opens a back door on the compromised computer.

This "could" allow hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can clean this machine but I cannot guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. "If you would like to continue, then follow the steps below, otherwise please let me know"

I Would like you to do the following.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links.
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"
In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

Gringo

I downloaded combofix onto my computer and tried to run it, but it wouldn't start up (just like spybot search and destroy) even after re-naming the .exe .
The little box with the loading bar shows up, but after that nothing happens.
So I downloaded the file from another computer onto a USB and renamed the file just in case.
Again, combofix won't start even after renaming and downloading another copy of it, just the same loading bar and then nothing.

Any ideas as to how I can get it started?

I also found that if i turned the computer on without having the internet connected, Id have a hard time opening up my computer/my documents etc to access the USB with combofix on it and I am unable to access the Task Manager after about two minutes of the computer starting.

I want you to run this tool for me next.

tdsskiller:

Please read carefully and follow these steps.
  • Download TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.
  • Extract its contents to your desktop.
  • Once extracted, open the TDSSKiller folder and doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then on Start Scan.
  • If an infected file is detected, the default action will be Cure, click on Continue.
  • If a suspicious file is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue.
  • It may ask you to reboot the computer to complete the process. Click on Reboot Now.
  • If no reboot is require, click on Report. A log file should appear. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
  • If a reboot is required, the report can also be found in your root directory, (usually C:\ folder) in the form of "TDSSKiller.[Version]_[Date]_[Time]_log.txt". Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.

Unfortunately I am still unable to start combofix, even after downloading a new file.
I am, however, able to open spybot s&d and start up the avg interface some time after startup both of which I was unable to do so before.

Thank you again for your time

Hello

Ok lets try this, I want you to run combofix in safe mode but it is very important that when combofix reboots the computer for you to direct it back into safe mode so it can finish the scan.

Boot into Safe Mode

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.

after combofix has finished its scan please post the report back here.

Hello

It looks like you have more than one antivrus running , this could be part of the reason combofix is not running

:multiple Anti Virus programs:
It looks like you are operating your computer with multiple Anti Virus programs running in memory at once:

    AV: AVG Internet Security
    AV: Webroot AntiVirus with AntiSpyware

Anti-virus programs take up an enormous amount of your computer's resources when they are actively scanning your computer. Having two anti-virus programs running at the same time can cause your computer to run very slow, become unstable and even, in rare cases, crash.

    Please remove one of them.

I see some other stuff that we need to go after, so I want you to run this custom script for me.

:Run CFScript:

Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the box into the window:

CODE
Driver::
nzvp

Save it to your desktop as CFScript.txt

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe

This will let ComboFix run again.
Restart if you have to.
Save the produced logfile to your desktop.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

"information and logs"
In your next post I need the following
    1. report from Combofix
    2. let me know of any problems you may have had
    3. How is the computer doing now after running the script?

Gringo

Would you suggest keeping AVG and disable the Webroot AntiVirus part for now?

It would be best to remove one

even when you disable an ativirus there are still services and drivers that don't completely stop so they will still fight with each other

Hi there :)

Apologies for the late reply.

I have uninstalled AVG and kept Webroot on instead.

Following the uninstallation on AVG I ran Combofix with your script and the report is below.
Thought I'd better mention as well that after Combofix finished scanning and attempted to restart the computer, it blue screened with 'bad_pool_header' error. I restarted manually and the log file was created as normal.
