The Toshiba Satellite A70 Win XP Service Pack 3
Can't get windows update to update. Get [Error number: 0x80070424
Have Symantec Antivirus provided by Comcast

Was updating my Glary Utilities and when I run a scan the computer shuts down.

Bleeping computer doesn't recommend using registry cleaners like Glary Utilities

Symantec Antivirus is really quite poor in my opinion.

Also, when you scan the system and it shuts down, does it just power off or do you see it shut down, close programs, etc?
