Hi,

My computer will not standby or shutdown. I have to do it manually with the power switch, which is pretty annoying and probably bad for my PC.

I've done various searches (this forum and google more generally) but nothing has worked so far.

Thanks in advance for any help/advice

Many standby issue's are caused by outdated video drivers or incorrect BIOS settings. I'll need some more information to help troubleshoot this issue.

Please download Speccy

Install the application > click File > Publish Snapshot.

Click yes to allow the app to generate a unique url for your computer.

Post the link in your next reply.

Thanks for the fast replies:

System: Sony Vaio SZ2XP

No error messages.

About videos drivers: I've been to the nvidia site and they say that their driver update for my card (go 7400) should not be installed on a vaio machine, so I guess can't update them.

I am unable to find a Sony VAIO SZ2XP listed on there website.

Visit the Sony eSupport Site. Select Detect My Model.

Confirm you have the most recent video & BIOS installed.

Here's the vaio support page for my laptop:

http://genesis.sony-europe.com/instranet/c...2XP_C&df=on

I have the lastest bios/video drivers that are there.

As I said, I think those drivers are pretty old, but i can't update from nvidia (see link below, bottom of the page):

Open up Control Panel, open Power Options, set the power scheme to portable/laptop. Apply the settings and let the computer sit to see if with standby.

Upgrade to SP3 and see if the issue still happens.

If you did in fact try that, then why does your computer show SP2 when the installation date is from yesterday?

@crypto dan. my reply that it didn't do anything was to the previous post.

As to SP3: it seems a bit much to do a total upgrade of the whole operating system for a standby issue. My system is otherwise stable and fast, so I'd rather not go to SP3 if I can help it.

Any other ideas

You do realize that MS no longer supports your system because of SP2 right?

The benefits of upgrading SP2 to SP3 far out weigh anything else.

I suppose so, but the thing is,I upgraded to SP3 last year and everything went wrong. I ended up reinstalling my original copy of xp from my recovery disks.

As I said, I'm really happy about how the system is running apart from the standby/shutdown issue, so I'd rather not take the risk

Do you have any model numbers from your laptop? They should be on the bottom.

If so can you post them
