I first realised my computer was infected when a couple of programmes opened themselves, and prevented me from running anything else. These programmes purported to be anti virus, malware and spyware applications. Their windows popped up, informing me that my computer was not properly protected, insisting that I download updates. Given that I had not installed any of these programmes, their assertion that I was vulnerable was evidently correct. However, my pressing either the "OK" or "Cancel" yielded the same result: endless repetition of the popping up download requests. I was able to terminate the suspect processes with the task manager. I did this by holding down "Ctrl" and "Alt"; pressing "Delete"; then, while continuing to hold down "Ctrl" and "Alt", I right clicked the suspect process and selected "End Process Tree". I know it is not usually necessary to keep "Ctrl" and "Alt" down when using task manager, but these suspect processes kept booting task manager into the background, so I couldn't use it to shut them down. I found that holding down "Ctrl" and "Alt" was the only way to keep task manager in the foreground.

I noted the process names, searched for the applications on my hard drive, and deleted them. I then tried to update Avast, but it wouldn't connect to the update server. I started up Hide IP Easy, and this allowed me to update Avast, which I immediately ran. It found several infected files, all of which I deleted.

For several months before the above incident, I was being frustrated by new Firefox windows' popping up incessantly, even though I was not clicking on anything. At the time of the incident, I figured these two things had to be connected, so I ran a google search on the unwanted site which popped up most frequently: cptgt.com. Going through the results, I saw that one link had to do with malware removal, so I clicked on it. But Firefox would not follow the link, instead it kept going to some BS website. So I copied the link location and pasted it into a new tab. Since then, I noticed that Firefox did not follow the majority of google links, instead going to unwanted (and therefore suspect) locations.

I began using my router firewall to block all the websites which kept popping up, but am now unable to login to my router. Another problem, which has irritated me for as long as the unwanted sites' popping up, is that Firefox will not start certain downloads (most recent example: dds.scr).

Using Malwarebytes has solved the google link problem, and the pop ups have stopped, but it continually has to block malicious websites. I am still getting viruses frequently. Avast finds the trojans, but cannot find the application which keeps putting them on my computer. Although Avast updates normally now (without need to hide IP), I still cannot login to my router online.

I use another computer to login to my router, and to download files such as dds.scr, so I'm confident I can perform any steps suggested by this site's staff, whom I'd like to thank for taking the time to read my ramblings.

Greetings

One or more of the identified infections is Known as a Backdoor Trojan. - TDSS rootkit <--please read

What this virus does do.
QUOTE
Functionality
The functionality that the Trojan exhibits implies that it has been designed with profit-making as its primary objective. Making money from the Web typically involves generating Web traffic, installing pay-per-install software and also by generating sales leads for other Web sites and services of a dubious nature. It tries to achieve its objective by employing an array of techniques to try and make the user participate in these income-generating activities.

What the virus can do.
QUOTE
Backdoor.Tidserv is a Trojan horse that uses an advanced rootkit to hide itself. It also displays advertisements, redirects user search results, and opens a back door on the compromised computer.

This "could" allow hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can clean this machine but I cannot guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. "If you would like to continue, then follow the steps below, otherwise please let me know"

I Would like you to do the following.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links.
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"
In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

Gringo

This seems to have cured the downloading symptom, but I still can't login to my router online. I suspect that this is the result of damage done to my OS while the infection was active. I will be installing a new OS today, so I may as well reformat my hard drive. Please let me know if any clean up is necessary before doing this. Thanks.

Have you tried to reset the router?
