Dear Sirs,
I have something on my Wife's machine that tries to HTTP redirect, and opens pop-up windows intermittently when IE is opened. This does not happen when the Wireless Net connection is not present, of course she isn't trying to use the Net either. I have purchased Ad Aware, which removed 73 objects, and Norton Internet Security 2006, which continually removes Trojans. Pop Up blocker is turned on, but it doesn't seem to matter. I also ranu the Autorun utility and compared the startup programs to your DB. I deleted several files identified as malicious. The original problem was Surfsidekick 3, which I believe I got rid of, with the help of your site. Please help, thank you.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad in order to assist you when carrying out the following instructions.

You are running Hijack This from the desktop. It needs to be in a permanent folder. Please go into Windows Explorer, click on C:\ then click on File > New > Folder and call it HJT , or another name of your choice. The program creates backup files that we may need to use later. If the program is on the desktop, files may be deleted accidentally.

Please disable AdWatch, as it may hinder the removal of some entries. You can re-enable it after you're clean.
To disable AdWatch:
  • Open AdAware SE.
  • Go to AdWatch User Interface.
  • Go to Tools and Preferences.
  • At the bottom of the screen you will see 2 options Active and Automatic.
  • Active: This will turn Ad-Watch On\Off without closing it
  • Automatic: Suspicious activity will be blocked automatically
  • Uncheck both options. You can enable these after resolving your problem.
  • Unless they are turned off they could interfere with the fix by HijackThis.
Viewing Hidden Files
Go to My Computer >Tools >Folder Options >View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled. Also make sure that the System Files and Folders are showing / visible. Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files option.

Copy everything inside the quote box below (starting with dir) and paste it into notepad. Go up to "File > Save As" and click the drop-down box to change the "Save As Type" to "All Files". Save it as findfile.bat on your Desktop.

dir C:\WINDOWS\system32\w?auclt.exe /a h > files.txt
notepad files.txt

Locate findfile.bat on your Desktop and double-click on it. It will open Notepad with some text in it. Please post the contents of that Notepad here.

Hi,
Thank you very much for your help with these problems. I followed you directions EXACTLY, except what I am about to list.

-Services couldn't find cmdCommand - I used regedit and went into the CurrentControlset, and the two backup controlset's and deleted the service manually.

-The files that you wanted me to uninstall from Add/Remove were not there, however, there is a program "Command" which is an instant HTTP redirect. Since the net was down, it couldn't connect. I would like to remove this. There are a couple of other programs that are installed that look suspicious also. For example, there is a webcam program installed that I did not install, nor do I have a webcam on this machine.

-When I ran Ewido, the only option was to remove the offending files. I removed and quaranteened them.

Other than these minor deviations, everything else went as planned.

Please find the log files pasted below.

Thanks again,

Rick

Sorry for the delay and thank you for your continued patience. Below I will ask for an uninstall list, if you so choose, you may bold entries you believe to be suspicious/not installed by you. To do this surround each entry with [b ] and [/ b] tags (remove the spaces).

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad in order to assist you when carrying out the following instructions.

Viewing Hidden Files
Go to My Computer >Tools >Folder Options >View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled. Also make sure that the System Files and Folders are showing / visible. Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files option.

Downloads
Cleanup! (Alternate Link)- Install it. You will use this later.

*NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temporary folders and does not make backups.

I have attached a file to this post - regdel.txt
Download it & rename it regdel.REG (inclusive of the quotes)
Make sure you do not mistakenly rename it as regdel.reg.txt (double extensions)
Double-click on it & answer YES when prompted to merge into the Registry.

Reboot your system in Safe Mode (By repeatedly tapping the F8 key until the menu appears).

File and Folder Deletions
Delete the following Files indicated in RED and Folders indicated in BLUE if they still exist.
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ekkgr.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\APD123.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\w?auclt.exe <<< You are looking for a file that is 401,408 KB and was created on 10/18/2005, only delete the file with these attributes. The ? may represent any character.
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\atmtd.dll
C:\PROGRAM FILES\CMSystem
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ipoyri.exe

Tools
Open HijackThis, click Config, then click Misc Tools.
Click "Open Uninstall Manager"
Click "Save List" (generates uninstall_list.txt)
Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from Start > All Programs). Set the program up as follows:

Click Options
Move the slider button down to Custom CleanUp!

Check the following:
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files
  • Cleanup! All Users
Uncheck the following :
  • Scan local drives for temporary files

Click OK, Press the CleanUp! button to start the program and reboot(Normal Mode) when prompted.

Reboot your system in Normal Mode.

Online Scans
Please open IE and go to
Kaspersky WebScanner

Next Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Standard
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.
Take note the names and locations of any file it detects but fails to clean.

* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

In your next post please include:
  • Uninstall List

Here are the files that you requested.

In between my last post and yours, I had updated Ad Aware, and it seemed to remove the items that

I thought were suspicious. Out of all the files you wanted me to delete, none of them were

present. I did delete the directory, but it was empty also.

Kapersky AND Norton tell me that I have a virus, but Norton could not remove it.
Thank you for your on-going help with these problems.

Unfortunately something seems to have respawned a couple of the entries in your Hijackthis log. This means I will need you to repeat some of the procedures I have already had you go through. Please follow these instructions completely, even if they seem repetitive.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad in order to assist you when carrying out the following instructions.

Please follow Symantec’s Guide to clean out your Norton quarantine.

Downloads(make sure to save these in a permanent location)
WinPFind-Unzip it to the Desktop. If you still have this program you do not need to download it again
Track qoo-Unzip it to the desktop. If you still have this program you do not need to download it again
KillBox v2.0.0.175.exe (it's important that you get version v2.0.0.175)

HijackThis!
Open Hijack This and click on Scan. Check the following entries (make sure you do not miss any)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KernelFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -k
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [winsync] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ipoyri.exe reg_run
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Tbsa] "C:\Program Files\trus\astr.exe" -vt yazr
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Pdkvql] C:\WINDOWS\system32\w?auclt.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [CMMan] "C:\Program Files\CMMan\CMMan.exe"

Please remember to close all other windows, including browsers then click Fix checked.

Tools
Launch KillBox.exe & select the following options:
  • delete on Reboot
Enter the filename
  • C:\WINDOWS\system32\ipoyri.exe
* Click the RED X button.
* Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt.
* Click No at the 'Pending Operations prompt'.

Repeat these steps for these files (enter them one at a time):
  • C:\Program Files\trus
    C:\Program Files\CMMan
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\ekkgr.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\atmtd.dll
Reboot your system in Safe Mode (By repeatedly tapping the F8 key until the menu appears).

Double click WinPFind.exe

* Click 'Start Scan'
* It will scan the entire system, so please be patient!
* Once the scan is complete:
1. Go to the WinPFind folder
2. Locate WinPFind.txt
3. Copy those results in the next post!

Reboot back to Normal Mode

Double click on Track qoo.vbs
Wait a few seconds and Notepad will pop up. Copy & Paste those results and place them in the next post along with the results of WinPFind!
Note - If you have an anti-virus program that has script blocking features, you will get a pop up window asking you what to do. Allow this entire script to run. It's harmless.

Online Scans
Trend Micro™ Anti-Spyware for the Web Utility (by clicking the "Scan and Clean your PC" button).
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click the new icon on your desktop (tmas-web-scan.exe)
  • It will say "Loading TrendMicro definitions".
  • Once the definitions are loaded, the program will appear to close then re-open.
  • Click "Start Scan"
  • After it's done scanning, click "Scan Results"
  • Make sure all items found have a check next to them, then click "Clean Threats Now".
  • Click Exit.
Reboot your computer. In place of the TrendMicro icon will be a text file called "Antispyware.log", please double-click that log and copy the entire contents and paste them here.

I then need you to repeat the same procedure above again... using the TrendMicro tool. I need the log from the second scan/clean...NOT the first...as this will contain what’s left in the system.

Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan
** click on "Free use ActiveScan" located on the top right hand corner
  • Click Scan your PC & a 'pop up' window shall appear. *ensure that your pop up blocker doesn't block it
  • Click Scan Now
  • Enter your e-mail address & click Scan Now ...begins downloading 8 MB Panda's ActiveX controls
Begin the scan by selecting My Computer
  • If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report.
  • Click on see report. Then click Save report
Post the contents of the report in your next reply
