Hi guys,

I'm replacing a dead hard drive from my dell dimension pc with a brand new hard drive. I have an xp installation cd, can somebody remind me of the steps I need take to prepare my new hard drive (once it's all plugged in) for the installation of XP. Haven't done this in ages so would really appreciate a reminder!

Thanks

Jacob

R

Is your Installation CD Dell Branded?

No, it isn't. My mum has given me this pc without any discs and she can't find the discs

Is this going to cause a problem?

Well...without any disks...how do you plan to install Windows on a new hard drive?

A new hard drive...is just a storage cabinet. To use it, it must be formatted and have an operating system installed on it.

If you don't have the disks issued with that system...you can try to get replacements by contacting Dell.

What model Dimension?

The xp disc I have is a retail version as opposed to Dell branded. The hard drive has never had an OS installed on it.

Do I not need to create a primary partition before doing this? Or am I going mad?

If you insert the CD...then boot the system...you will see that the XP does that before doing the install or as part of the install process.
