Hello. You all were very helpful in removing my last malware and I thank you for that. I was a fair tipper. ;)

On 9-30-10 at about 5:19PM I was hit with hard drive going nuts and modem activity. I literally pulled the plug on the computer, but it was too late. I haven't found the definition for this malware, but I've got one either way. Within a half hour of getting hit, I searched for all files modified on 9-30-10. Some anomalies came up. A few of the files that are a concern are 6to4v32.dll, igfxsrvc.exe and a setup.exe in a new folder created at the time of the attack. An old version of rkill didn't find a rootkit, but today a newer version of rkill found and stopped c:\WINDOWS\system32\igfxsrvc.exe.

The only outward evidence of there being a problem is an occasional redirect to a web site hxxp://channel1reports.com , a site that wants me to pay them $10 for info on how to make money from home (or so that's what it looked like - didn't spend much time looking at it).

Here's the DDS listing and GMER log:

Oh, this may also be important.

I renamed 6to4v32.dll to 6to4v32.dll.quar and
setup.exe in windows\temp\xjul to setup.exe.quar.

This was to quarantine two of the files I identified as being involved with this issue. Neither were running processes when the scans were done.

Greetings

One or more of the identified infections is Known as a Backdoor Trojan. - TDSS rootkit <--please read

What this virus does do.
QUOTE
Functionality
The functionality that the Trojan exhibits implies that it has been designed with profit-making as its primary objective. Making money from the Web typically involves generating Web traffic, installing pay-per-install software and also by generating sales leads for other Web sites and services of a dubious nature. It tries to achieve its objective by employing an array of techniques to try and make the user participate in these income-generating activities.

What the virus can do.
QUOTE
Backdoor.Tidserv is a Trojan horse that uses an advanced rootkit to hide itself. It also displays advertisements, redirects user search results, and opens a back door on the compromised computer.

This "could" allow hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can clean this machine but I cannot guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. "If you would like to continue, then follow the steps below, otherwise please let me know"

I Would like you to do the following.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links.
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"
In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

Gringo

Greetings

Good That cleaned up some bad guys but I see some other stuff that we need to go after, so I want you to run this custom script for me.

:Run CFScript:

Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the box into the window:

CODE
DDS::
uInternet Settings,ProxyServer = http=127.0.0.1:5555
uInternet Settings,ProxyOverride = <local>

Save it to your desktop as CFScript.txt

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe

This will let ComboFix run again.
Restart if you have to.
Save the produced logfile to your desktop.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

"information and logs"
In your next post I need the following
    1. report from Combofix
    2. let me know of any problems you may have had
    3. How is the computer doing now after running the script?

Gringo

Only error was it again found rootkit activity and had to restart before continuing. Don't know if that's normal or not. I again restarted the computer to see if rkill found any rootkits. Rkill didn't find any.

Hello

It looks like the rootkit is still active. I want you to run this tool for me next.

tdsskiller:

Please read carefully and follow these steps.
  • Download TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.
  • Extract its contents to your desktop.
  • Once extracted, open the TDSSKiller folder and doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then on Start Scan.
  • If an infected file is detected, the default action will be Cure, click on Continue.
  • If a suspicious file is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue.
  • It may ask you to reboot the computer to complete the process. Click on Reboot Now.
  • If no reboot is require, click on Report. A log file should appear. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
  • If a reboot is required, the report can also be found in your root directory, (usually C:\ folder) in the form of "TDSSKiller.[Version]_[Date]_[Time]_log.txt". Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.

Since it's not on the net, I just downloaded ComboFix again for the laptop.

It ran without having to reboot (I guess it didn't find a rootkit.

To be sure, I shut the computer and did a fresh bootup. Again, I ran ComboFix and it ran the same without having to reboot.

I fear that there may still be something going on - very reminiscent of the last infection that was putting off resolving.

I notice the hard drive is had at work while it should be idle. Norton does this from time to time, but that's when I get a notice saying it needs to check for updates, since I had blocked it from doing so. At that time, if I press ctrl+alt+del to 'see' whats running, as soon as the Task Manager comes up, the hard drive activity stops (I guess so I can't what's running). If I close the Task Manager, in a few minutes, the hard drive activity starts up again and will again stop when I pull up the Task Manager.

Well, it's doing this same thing again. I don't know how to 'see' what process or service is running my hard drive when it stops with the task manager running.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that so long as the Task Manager is open, the hard drive never stars up the ghost running again.

Update Adobe Reader
Recently there have been vunerabilities detected in older versions of Adobe Reader. It is strongly suggested that you update to the current version.

You can download it from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
After installing the latest Adobe Reader, uninstall all previous versions.
If you already have Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition installed or do not wish to have it installed UNcheck the box which says Also Download Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition.
If you don't like Adobe Reader (53 MB), you can download Foxit PDF Reader(7 MB) from here. It's a much smaller file to download and uses a lot less resources than Adobe Reader.

Note: When installing FoxitReader, be carefull not to install anything to do with AskBar.

I have a brand new copy of WebRoot Essentials. Can I install this first before getting on the web to get these updated programs? I'm not comfortable letting this computer on the web without it.
