Hello,

I tried to follow the removal instructions for MS Security Essential Alert. I downloaded rkill but every time i try to run it gets stopped and does not complete. I clicked on it several times right in a row and finally it did stay up but hung in the please be patient for over 2 hours.

I also tried to run dss as was requested but that also gets stopped.

Also I rebotted my computer and now I get a black desktop with no icons it does however bring up a window where i can then navigate to different places on my computer like the different drives and stuff.

Thanks
Steve

Hello mdhszh and welcome to BleepingComputer forums.

You have to tell us your Windows version/edition. It is one bit of needed info so I can better guie you.
It is not good to assume that eveyone is using the same version as yours.
Please give explicit details.

Give this a try.
First, make sure you have saved all your work before you begin, and close your open apps.

Note: If using Firefox right-click on any download links and choose Save As
Save both files to the same place ---- the Desktop.

Please download OTH and SAVE to the Desktop

Please download OTL and SAVE to the Desktop

Double click the OTH file to run it and click Kill All Processes, your desktop will go blank.
IF you are running Vista or Windows 7, then do a Right-click on OTH and select Run As Administrator to start.

Once OTH has started, click on Start OTL. OTL will now start.
  • Do the following in OTL:
  • In the lower right corner, checkmark "LOP Check" and checkmark "Purity Check".
  • Now click Run Scan at Top left and let the program run uninterrupted. It will take about 4 minutes.
  • When the scan completes, it will open two Notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
  • Back in OTH:
Click the Internet Explorer button. Go to this forum & login & return to this topic.
Copy & Paste these logs into your reply here.
  • After you are all done, press Reboot to start your system fresh.

Ok I have not used this computer since I logged my ticket. When I saw your response I turned it on and it seems that everything is ok. It booted up without the blank screen and no virus on the computer. I am worried thought that there may be something running in the background that I dont know about to capture passwors maybe. It just seems strange that it got better by itself.

Is there something that we can do to check that out

I am on Windows 7 Home Edition.

I useIE 8 and Google Chrome.

I did not do any of the things below as the issue is different.

Thanks
Steve

If you want me to assess this system, you need to run the tools I outlined and post those reports.

Not sure what I am doing wrong. I downloaded the files to my desktop. I have Windows 7 Home Edition so I right clicked on the OTH and do not get an run as option instead get : Test, Configure, Install, Share with, Notron Internet Security, Scan with Malware, Restore Previous version, sent to, cut, copy, create shortcut, delete, restore, properties,

I also just tried to run it and did get the the screen that you showed. I clicked on kill processes but nothing happened screen did not go blank.

Apologies for delay in getting back to you.
Please re-read all of my last reply.
Did you also press Start OTL and do the rest of instructions, as outlined?

completed this step succesfully

[i]Note: If using Firefox right-click on any download links and choose Save As
Save both files to the same place ---- the Desktop.
Use IE8 step not needed

completed this step succesfully

completed this step succesfully

Double click the OTH file to run it and click Kill All Processes, your desktop will go blank.
IF you are running Vista or Windows 7, then do a Right-click on OTH and select Run As Administrator to start.
Using Windows 7 but right-click does not give the Run As Admin option. I wrote all options given when I right click in previous post ---- CAN NOT COMPLETE THIS STEP

I have not done any of the steps past this one as I could not complete this step

Refer to this Preparation guide at BC, http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic34773.html

Can you run & get a DDS.txt report ? if so, copy & paste it into a reply.

And Right-click on OTL.scr and do Run as Administrator.
If OTL completes, also copy & paste OTL.txt and Extras.txt into a reply.
