This is the problem where AVG found but couldn't remove some trojan adloads (then didn't find them), then new windows in IE (and new tabs in Firefox) started popping up random numbered HTTP links or links to ads for downloadable music and crap, plus Windows Generic Host System32 would have a problem and need to close fairly frequently (thus disabling sound for Warcraft III and new Youtube windows). So on the advice of boopme:

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit scanner. Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

Casey

If I have been helping you and I do not reply within 48hours, feel free to send me a PM.

I am still having problems, yes. I understand the backlog, that's quite alright.

Let me elaborate on them:

-Random new tabs on Firefox, or random new windows on IE, will pop up suddenly with ad sites or random numbered sites that don't go anywhere. (Page cannot be displayed)

-Firefox will occasionally crash. Maybe once every two days.

-sometimes, when starting up, the Desktop icons and task bar will not appear and I must use CTRL ALT DEL to restart. Other times, when I'm turning the machine off (I do this every night), as it's shutting down the desktop icons and task bar will vanish but the desktop image will still be there. Again, I either have to call up CTRL ALT DEL or reset the computer manually.

-once in a very long while (mostly after there's been a power failure while the computer was on, but sometimes randomly), Windows will not start properly the first time (or maybe 2 - 4 times)

Also getting every day now, Windows Installer popping up on desktop startup. It tries 3 times and fails, with the message:

"HP Photosmart Essential 2.5

There is a problem with this windows installer package. A program required for this installation could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor" HP Photosmart is installed on my computer (but I've never been able to print anything using it on the network).

-At least once a day I'll get the following message:

Windows Generic Services Host System32 has encountered a problem and needs to close.
(when it does that I lose connection to IM programs, Telnet, and I also lose sound for any new Youtube video windows and Warcraft III. If I try to start Warcraft III after this happens, it will tell me it can't run it because sound is disabled.)

-My computer is running awfully slow (it's a Pentium 4 running Windows XP)

-Occasionally I'll get popups that say Resident Shield Alert found something, but I don't know if it's legit or not so I don't click on them. I have AVG but I'm wary of these popups since AVG at one point did find something but couldn't remove it, then stopped finding things.

Besides running AVG I have also run Superantispyware, MBAM, ATF-Cleaner, and ESET (according to instructions in This THread: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic349384.html ).

OK now for the DDs:

Hello OfficialPro,
  • Welcome to Bleeping Computer.
  • My name is fireman4it and I will be helping you with your Malware problem.

Please take note of some guidelines for this fix:
  • Refrain from making any changes to your computer including installing/uninstall programs, deleting files, modifying the registry, and running scanners or tools.
  • If you do not understand any step(s) provided, please do not hesitate to ask before continuing.
  • Even if things appear to be better, it might not mean we are finished. Please continue to follow my instructions and reply back until I give you the "all clean".
  • Finally, please reply using the button in the lower right hand corner of your screen. Do not start a new topic. The logs that you post should be pasted directly into the reply, unless they do not fit into the post.

1.
Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This changed from what we know in 2006 read this article:

http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546

I suggest you remove the program now. Click on start > run > and then paste the following into the "open" field: appwiz.cpl and press OK. From within Add or Remove Programs uninstall the following if they exist: Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player.

2.
Your log(s) show that you are using so called peer-to-peer or file-sharing programmes (in your case Bittorrent). These programmes allow to share files between users as the name(s) suggest. In today's world the cyber crime has come to an enormous dimension and any means is used to infect personal computers to make use of their stored data or machine power for further propagation of the malware files. A popular means is the use of file-sharing tools as a tremendous amount of prospective victims can be reached through it.

It is therefore possible to be infected by downloading manipulated files via peer-to-peer tools and thus suggested to be used with intense care. Some further readings on this subject, along the included links, are as follows: "File-Sharing, otherwise known as Peer To Peer" and "Risks of File-Sharing Technology."

It is also important to note that sharing entertainment files and proprietary software infringes the copyright laws in many countries over the world and you are putting yourself at risk of being indicted through organisations watching over the rights of the authors of such files (i.e. the RIAA for music files, or the MPAA for movie files in the USA) or the authors of the files themselves.

Naturally there are also legal ways to use these services, such as downloading Linux distributions or office suites such as "Open Office."

3.
Download and Run RKill
Please download RKill by Grinler from one of the 4 links below and save it to your desktop.

    Link 1
    Link 2
    Link 3
    Link 4

  • Before we begin, you should disable your anti-malware softwares you have installed so they do not interfere RKill running as some anti-malware softwares detect RKill as malicious. Please refer to this page if you are not sure how.
  • Double-click on Rkill on your desktop to run it. (If you are using Windows Vista, please right-click on it and select Run As Administrator)
  • A black screen will appear and then disappear. Please do not worry, that is normal. This means that the tool has been successfully executed.
  • If nothing happens or if the tool does not run, please let me know in your next reply

4.
Install Recovery Console and Run ComboFix

This tool is not a toy. If used the wrong way you could trash your computer. Please use only under direction of a Helper. If you decide to do so anyway, please do not blame me or ComboFix.

Download Combofix from any of the links below, and save it to your desktop.

Link 1
Link 2
  • Close/disable all anti-virus and anti-malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. Refer to this page if you are not sure how.
  • Close any open windows, including this one.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • If you did not have it installed, you will see the prompt below. Choose YES.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Note:The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you
should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.
  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you. Please post the contents of the log (C:\ComboFix.txt).
Leave your computer alone while ComboFix is running.
ComboFix will restart your computer if malware is found; allow it to do so.

Note: Please Do NOT mouseclick combofix's window while its running because it may cause it to stall.

Things to include in your next reply::
Combofix.txt
Have you previously had Norton Antivirus on your machine?
How is your machine running now?

" Extinguishing Malware from the world"

The Virus, Trojan, Spyware, and Malware Removal forum is very busy. If I'm helping you and I've not posted back within 24 hrs., send a PM with your topic link. Thank you.

ALL OTHER HELP REQUESTS VIA THE PM SYSTEM WILL BE IGNORED. The Forums are there for a reason!
Thanks-

I've got a serious problem.

I have AVG, but the tray icon for AVG won't show up on the task bar. So I can't shut it down like it should be. Help! I've got combo fix on pause here cuz I don't wanna hurt my machine.

I've had Norton on this thing before, but years ago. Got rid of it when it made this thing run way too slow.

Have only used Bittorrent once, for a file I couldn't get anywhere or any way else. So it's not like I regularly P2P lately.

Rkill only stopped Rkill.

Additionally, sometimes something tries to access my empty 3 1/4 inch disk drive.

So how do I shut down AVG properly? Should I temporarily uninstall if I can't shut it down properly?

Hello,

You can go ahead and run Combofix with Avg on. Just follow the prompts to let it run.

ok here's my combofix log (finally). The computer had to reboot at least twice. (I'm assuming since you called the log "Combofix.txt" that I am supposed to attach it rather than just paste it)

Comp seems to be running at an o-k speed for now (tested with a tiny bit of lag on Warcraft III games) I'll let you know if something like the services host closing pops up again.

Hello,

Things are looking better. You have some leftover Norton stuff we will get rid of it now.

1.
Uninstall Norton

  • Download the Norton Removal Tool to your desktop.
  • On the Windows desktop, double-click the Norton Removal Tool icon.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions.
Note:Your computer may be restarted more than once, and you may be asked to repeat some steps after the computer restarts
Norton should now be removed from your PC.

For illustrated instructions please refer to here:
http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

2.
We need to run a CFScript.

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:

CODE
Killall::

Folder::
c:\documents and settings\LocalService\Application Data\Bitrix Security

Renv::
c:\program files\AVG\AVG9\avgtray .exe
c:\program files\HP\Digital Imaging\bin\hpqSRMon .exe
c:\program files\QuickTime\qttask .exe

REGISTRY::
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\active setup\installed components\{EB6E5FDE-6F99-4375-809C-814825E5A76D}]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\security center]

Reglockdel::
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\Classes\CLSID\{A483C63A-CDBC-426E-BF93-872502E8144E}]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\Classes\Interface\{E3F2C3CB-5EB8-4A04-B22C-7E3B4B6AF30F}]

Driver::
SetupNTGLM7X
Lavasoft Kernexplorer
:

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

3.
Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (v1.44) and save it to your desktop.MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you. Temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
For instructions with screenshots, please refer to the How to use Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Guide.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the definition updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply. Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows MBAM's database version and your operating system.
  • Exit MBAM when done.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be asked to reboot your computer so MBAM can proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Things to include in your next reply::
Combofix.txt
MBAM log

ok, I got rid of the Norton stuff. then I ran the combofix like it said. But Combofix froze at step two and hasn't done anything for hours. It's not even making hard drive noises. So what do I do? Stop combofix? Restart? Or what

I'm having to post this from another machine of course because when Combofix is on it won't connect to the internet.

I tried all day yesterday and part of this morning. I CANNOT get that script to work in Combofix. I do not understand why it is not working. Every single time, around 5 or so minutes into the scan, it freezes after it says step 2 completed. The cursor in the combofix blue window blinks but no hard drive sounds at all. Just fans running. It simply will not complete scanning and no log forms.

I had thought that my habit of shutting down HP Digital monitor might have been responsible for the script not working all day yesterday, but leaving HP digital monitor running while doing this didn't make any difference, although the icon did disappear while the scan was running when I hadn't shut it down manually already.

BTW I have MBAM already installed, will that be acceptable to use (assuming I ever get out of the Combofix CFScript step)?

Hello

Lets try and run Combofix without the script and see if it runs. If Combofix still doesn't run then run Malwarebytes.
Please post the MBAM log along with a new DDS log if Combofix don't run

Combofix by itself ran just fine. So what I did, was I made two copies of the script, renaming one so I'll have it after. Tried it again, it failed the first time. So when I restarted, I immediately renamed the second copy back to CFScript and ran it. This time it worked. BTW when the script finished running, I got the following popups:

Catchme.cfxxe - DLL Initialization failed
The application failed to initialize because windows is shutting down

the other two popups were the same except substitute the following in for catchme.cfxxe
NirCmd.exe
PVcfxxe

The combofix screen said rebooting windows please wait
then all the desktop icons vanished but the task bar remained visible. Waited over half an hour for it to "reboot" but it didn't so I manually shut down. When I turned it back on I got the combofix log, which is attached.

OK got the ESET done and log:

C:\Qoobox\Quarantine\C\WINDOWS\system32\Drivers\cdrom.sys.vir Win32/Olmarik.ZC trojan cleaned - quarantined

That's the only thing it found.

I have noticed, at least since around when I started running combofix, that the random new window popups (or tabs, when it was firefox) for random ad pages or cannot-be-displayed pages stopped happening.

It seems to be running a little better now.
