This is my second visit to BleepingComputer.com Love you, love the show.

I have had a number of issues with my Dell machine running XP Pro. Let's begin.

The problems seemed to begin some months back when I would be on the internet visiting normal usage websites such as my e-mail (from my paid domain) or perhaps the local news website. A web browser window would open unexpectedly and without my prompting, directing me to various websites offering generic search links, college info or shopping. Each time the URL at the top of the browser would begin with "mfeed.in" (only characters inside quotations). This happened especially frequently when I would perform a search on Google.

After a period of time these new browser windows stopped appearing, but a new symptom replaced them. When searching on Google, if I clicked on any of the links provided by my search I would be taken to web pages that resembled the ones in the unrequested browser windows mentioned previously. Copying the link and pasting it directly into the address bar was the only way to visit a site from the search page.

Some time after this began to happen, but not immediately and not coinciding with browser issues, McAfee Security Center began to act squirrelly, sometimes shutting off for no apparent reason. Only the Virus Scanner and E-mail protection would fail. The Firewall would remain on. At the time this began it was very sporadic, and seemed potentially an issue with McAfee or my aging computer and the thousands of potential variables which could cause such a program to act up. However, currently McAfee fails to perform at all (excluding the Firewall), shutting down within five seconds of the program successfully starting up. Attempts to turn on protection seem to succeed...for a few seconds, before the program shuts down again. I am currently running with only the McAfee Firewall and Malwarebytes active protection.

Between yesterday and today my computer has reached a point where I have had to restart several times after programs failed to respond (per Task Manager), failed to load even after 20 minutes of waiting, or failed to shut down even after 20 minutes of waiting or attempts to close the programs using the Task Manager. This includes MS Office programs, Internet Explorer, Adobe Reader, McAfee Security Center, and any of the invisible applications that run in the background that always seem to annoyingly fail to shut down at times like these, like HelperMsgListenerWnd and mim.exe Stupid applications.

Sometimes I watch the memory usage of applications via the Task Manager and it seems that McAfee programs are attempting to draw far more memory than they should, and seem to be way more active than you would expect from a security suite that perhaps receives one or two updates for its modules per day. I'm not sure what this is about, but I do know I have an active paid subscription with McAfee, so that isn't the problem.

Other things I've noticed:
Earlier today I noticed that the icon for my Dell AIO Printer A940 which usually appears in the System Tray alternately appeared and disappeared during the course of attempting to deal with McAfee. I don't actually use my printer as I have no toner for it, and the printer isn't even plugged in, though the program is still part of start-up.

Anyway, here are my logs, and I really appreciate the help ~ melanie

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

Please include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Please refrain from running tools or applying updates other than those we suggest while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

Even if you have already provided information about your PC, we need a new log to see what has changed since you originally posted your problem.
We need to create an OTL Report
  1. Please download OTL from one of the following mirrors:
  2. Save it to your desktop.
  3. Double click on the icon on your desktop.
  4. Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  5. In the custom scan box paste the following:
    CODE
    msconfig
    safebootminimal

    %systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /90
  6. Push the button.
  7. Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extra.txt<--Will be minimized

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. I suggest you do this and select Immediate E-Mail notification and click on Proceed. This way you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

After 5 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed.

I still can not run McAfee Virus Scan successfully. It shuts down within five seconds of turning on.

Typing in this message pane causes the hourglass icon to appear and characters only display on the screen after a delay of approximately 20-30 seconds. Typing this sentence took a full two minutes. This is a new symptom.

The last recent successful virus scan that did complete (approximately three weeks ago) indicated a trojan was discovered by the scan but I am not aware which one, and the program will not stay open long enough for me to find out.

OTL scans are here. I am actively monitoring this topic.

Hi,

you have been infected by a nasty rootkit. It is a backdoor trojan.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can still clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. Let me know what you decide to do.

If you decide to clean, then please run ComboFix and post the log in your next reply:

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • Temporarily disable isable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
Usually this can be done via a right click on the System Tray icon, check this tutorial for disabling the most common security programs: Link

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

I read your post. I read the link provided regarding when to make the decision to reinstall the operating system.

My thoughts went like this.

I will ultimately reinstall my operating system, but not today. I do not store sensitive banking information or client info on my machine, nor have I ever succumbed to using silly programs like Microsoft Wallet. Nearly all of my photos and music are already backed-up on CDs and I had the foresight to purchase install CDs for nearly all of my installed programs...just in case.

Now I need to go dig in the bedroom for the reinstall CDs. But not just this exact moment. Ugh.

I attempted to run ComboFix. First I disconnected from the internet, made sure McAfee was not running, disabled MalwareBytes, and I had already closed Internet Explorer. I've run ComboFix before with help from a tech from BleepingComputer so I knew what to expect.

The program began its run. A few minutes in, sometime after the message "Attempting to create a system restore point" and possibly after the next message but I can't recall the wording, I received a BLUE SCREEN and the message BAD_POOL_HEADER followed by the usual messages about restarting the computer if it was the first time to see it and to uninstall recently loaded software or use Safe Mode if necessary to aid in dumping problem causing programs. The stop code is ***STOP 0x00000019 (0x000000Z0, 0xF78DA2AC, OxF78DA7E4, 0xF8A708E0)

So...I restarted the computer and figured I should report this before making another attempt to run ComboFix. I should also report that, at this moment, McAfee is running fully, including the Virus Scan, and started up with no trouble when I booted the computer. Of course, I booted the computer while it was still disconnected from the internet, which is the only variation, but it remains working at this moment.

How should we proceed?

Hi,

please make sure McAfee is disabled when you start ComboFix and then try to run it again. It is possible that they were interfering with each other while running. (After the reboot just wait for things to go their way, even if McAfee appears to be active again).

Should it BSOD again, let me know.

Okay, I closed IE, disconnected the internet cable from the back of my computer, shut down MalwareBytes, shut down McAfee Virus Scan and McAfee Firewall and began the scan with ComboFix.

It began smoothly.

Approximately 4 minutes after start I got the BSOD with the same message as yesterday, though it gave me different codes at the bottom.

BAD_POOL_HEADER

***STOP: 0x00000019 (0x000000Z0, 0xF78DAZAC, 0xF78DAA1C, 0x88EE1008)

After restart, I brought MalwareBytes back up, followed by McAfee. This time McAfee Virus Scan shuts down repeatedly. I sat here and watched it for a while, before I hooked the internet cable back up to the machine. It was real strange seeing the Virus Scan turn on for perhaps a second or two, then shut off for 30 seconds to as long as a couple minutes before attempting the whole process again.

It seems ComboFix and my machine, in its current state, aren't compatible.

I gladly welcome any ideas on how to proceed. Once I'm employed again things will be ever so much better.

Hi,

ok, let's try something else then:
  • Download TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.
  • Extract its contents to your desktop and make sure TDSSKiller.exe (the contents of the zipped file) is on the Desktop itself, not within a folder on the desktop.
  • Go to Start > Run (Or you can hold down your Windows key and press R) and copy and paste the following into the text field. (make sure you include the quote marks) Then press OK.

    "%userprofile%\Desktop\TDSSKiller.exe" -l C:\TDSSKiller.txt

  • If it says "Hidden service detected" DO NOT type anything in. Just press Enter on your keyboard to not do anything to the file.
  • When it is done, a log file should be created on your C: drive called "TDSSKiller.txt" please copy and paste the contents of that file here.

regards myrti

It took me a reread of your post to find the logfile. For some reason I expected it on the Desktop.

Pressing the Enter key as requested led to the following. The wording in your post sounds like you were only expecting the report and not a cleaning action.

Over the next couple days I'll only be able to respond late at night or morning, Central Daylight Time (U.S.) as I am attending a three-day music festival locally. I'll check each night upon return and each morning prior to departure and perform actions or take directions as they are posted.

I really appreciate all your time helping me.

Sigh...

McAfee seemed to stay more after running ComboFix, at least for a short while. Sadly, now it is turning on and off again at semi-occasional intervals, with no discernible pattern. At first I thought it was provoked when I opened Task Manager to see why Internet Explorer was running slow when I clicked on a link on the BleepingComputer main page. But events since have proved otherwise.

How things went down today:

Believing things "appeared" well I went to the main page of BleepingComputer. I clicked on the Forum link. The page did not change and the Progress bar was only half full with green bars and would go no further, even after several minutes. The hourglass would appear when I moved the cursor across the IE window so my only available options were to close the window, minimize it, open a different application, or use Task Manager to see if the program was Not Responding. I opened Task Manager and found the latter was the case. Task Manager listed not one but two lines for Internet Explorer under the Applications Tab, and this made me curious. Right clicking on each one, I checked the processes and found one linked to IE and the other to Explorer. In addition, I've always noticed that when IE is open not one but two Images of IE are open in the list of Processes in Task Manager. This has always seemed odd but I did not know if that was part of the search function or just how IE opens. While looking at all this a program called Update.exe also ran for a while, appearing on and off in the list, though there were no indications that any program was utilizing this program. It seemed an odd time for it to run.

I had to restart my computer. IE was not performing properly and the machine was running slow.

Upon restart McAfee is still acting bad and for some reason my Nvidia Control Panel which usually loads in the Task Bar did not load. I have no idea if that's an issue but I'm paying attention to every thing I see and trying to report the details.

And the music festival was great! Austin City Limits Music Festival, a nice walk to the park and then a hike back up the hill every night. When you have free time away from solving my problem check out www.aclfestival.com

Hi,

can you please run a scan with ComboFix:

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

If you need help, see this link:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

If you are using Internet Explorer 8, it is normal to see more than one iexplorer process in the list when you open it. It is an added security feature which calls for every tab a new process and one for the program itself. So you should always roughly have the tab number plus one iexplore processes showing.

Running ComboFix was interesting.

I downloaded it, and then began closing a couple of my other tabs that I had open, preparing to shut stuff down for the ComboFix run. While doing so McAfee suddenly informed me that Artemis!4CBF60F94C15(trojan) had been detected and removed and that a Restart was required to complete the cleaning process. The location of the Trojan was indicated inside the Combofix file that was downloading.

Naturally I was a little apprehensive...but also curious as to why I was receiving this detection.

The ComboFix file I downloaded to my desktop was now gone. However, the icon it creates on the C:\ drive that allows it access to everything remained, a 22MB file that I don't recall seeing on a previous time I worked with a tech to use ComboFix. I took a couple of screenshots just in case something went weird.

I went back to BleepingComputer and downloaded ComboFix again. It successfully saved and I disconnected my internet, disabled McAfee and MalwareBytes, and started the program.

After a few minutes of running ComboFix informed me that McAfee was enabled and that I should turn off my virus scanner before clicking on the OK button. This surprised me, and I found out that McAfee had indeed re-enabled the Real-Time Scanning feature, even though I had set it not to do so for 60 minutes. This time I set it to "NEVER" and clicked OK to continue the ComboFix scan.

No BSOD this time and it completed 50+ stages, though the computer was not happy shutting down. Nearly every background program popped up with an error that it could not be shut down or had an Application Error, click OK to terminate or CANCEL to Debug. Perhaps 15 windows popped open. I did not click on any of them, though I did note some of them. ComboFix rebooted the computer.

Upon restart, things initially ran slow, and the ComboFix program took a long time to finish. McAfee did not start up with Windows and I had to find it in the programs list to start it. When I finally connected to the web a window popped up telling me that Internet Explorer was not my Default Browser but would I care to make it so? I allowed it and then came here to make my post.

Quirky little program. I'll need a little more time and surfing to find out how things are working, or if they'll work after another restart. I don't believe anything has gone wrong in the last 3 hours but I haven't been here most of that time, and the internet cable was unplugged the majority of the time as well.
