After accidentally clicking one of those annoying pop ups my computer went completely haywire. I was not able to open IE or firefox but I was able to use IM and MSN messenger. I downloaded some of the recommended spyware and adware cleaners (search & destoy...) via a friends computer and swept my computer but it still says it can't get rid of two of the programs because they are being used by memory. I also did the cleanup in safe mode to see if that would get it but it didn't.

For some reason I am still able to browse the internet via Windows Explorer but whenever I try to bring up IE or firefox it says it has encountered and error and then it asks to send the error report. I still am getting pop ups as well.

Has anyone ever heard of this happening. Somehow whatever adware i installed has blocked me from using a web browser. I also tried reinstalling Firefox with no luck. Can anyone help?

Try doing all scans in safe mode.

Here are some web based scans that willl not be contaminated by malware as yours might be:

Kaspersky Anti-Virus Web Scanner
http://www.kaspersky.com/service?chapter=161739400#betatest

Panda Activescan (IE only)
http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/co...n_principal.htm

Trend Micro antivirus and malware scan:
http://housecall-beta.trendmicro.com/en/st...orp.asp?id=scan

Etrust Anti-virus web scanner
http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/virusinfo/scan.aspx.

online trojan scans here -
http://scan.sygatetech.com/pretrojanscan.html

http://windowsecurity.com/trojanscan

Windows Security Trojanscan
http://www.windowsecurity.com/trojanscan/trojanscan.asp

Run all the above and if you still hve a problem remaining you might want to run a Hijack This scan and post it in our Hijack This forum. Please follow all directions explicitly and do not attempt to use Hijack This by yourself unless you are an expert in registry.

Read the pinned post in our “HijackThis” forum, here
Carefully read and follow all directions explicitly.

Following instructions run a log, and post it in the appropriate HJT forum, at this link.

Do not as yet attempt to fix anything by yourself using Hijack This.

A member of our HJT Team will analyze your log, make recommendations and offer assistance.

It may take a short period of time to get a response to the log you posted because the members of our HJT Team are kept very busy.
Please be patient as this team is manned by volunteers. They will help you as soon as possible.

NOTE
Once you have posted your HJT log, please DO NOT make any additional posts in the HJT forum until you get a response from a member of our HJT expert team.

The first criteria they have when looking for logs that need replies are posts showing 0 replies. If you make an additional post, it will show as having 1 reply.
A team member, looking to see if a reply has been made might well assume another HJT Team member is already assisting you and might not open the thread to respond.

So, make your post and wait for a response from a team member.
