Hello, I was following the 'Smart Security Removal Guide' and ran into some problems.

I am running windows xp.

I am not able to run Malwarebytes even when in safe mode and after using "rkill"

I click on the icon and nothing happens

I cant access the internet unless I configure firefox to use "No proxy" in the advanced --> network tab. I am also getting re-directed from sites from time to time.

Rkill does terminate:
C:\DOCUME~1\Paige\LOCALS~1\Temp\Erz.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\0e9348\SM0e9_302.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\Paige\Desktop\rkill.com

(is it supposed to terminate itself?)

I can't run malwarebytes in regular mode either. I also have denied access to the hosts file when trying to use hijack this.

I think I may have more issue other than just a smart security virus problem

I would really appreciate any help on this matter.

Thanks

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit scanner. Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

Hello, I am still having similar problems.

While going through the 'Smart Security Removal Guide' I ran into some problems as stated before.

I was able to run Malwarebytes by renaming the exe file in the malwarebytes folder to "mbam.com." I ran a full scan and removed all infected objects. This was in safe mode. It seemed as though Smart Security was gone as the icon was not on the desktop, but after a restart it came back and I'm still having similar problems.

I cannot run malwarebytes(unless I rename it and change the extension) or any other ant-virus software. I cannot access the internet unless I configure firefox to "No proxy" in the 'tools - options - advanced - networks - settings' tab. When opening firefox it immediately closes me out saying, "there was a problem and will try to restore tabs," unless I run 'rkill' first, in which that problem goes away. Every search in google immediately re-directs me to another site, mostly "bing.com."

rkill terminates:

C:\DOCUME~1\Paige\LOCALS~1\Temp\Erz.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\0e9348\SM0e9_302.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\Paige\Desktop\rkill.com

after using rkill, the pop-ups from Smart Security stop, but I believe it is still running.

I have attached the logs asked of me, including the malwarebytes log. (was not allowed to send attach.txt as a compressed file, so I sent it as is)

I really need your guys' help on this one.

I greatly appreciate any help directed towards me.

Thanks

8. Click "Fix" and reboot.

" Extinguishing Malware from the world"

The Virus, Trojan, Spyware, and Malware Removal forum is very busy. If I'm helping you and I've not posted back within 24 hrs., send a PM with your topic link. Thank you.

ALL OTHER HELP REQUESTS VIA THE PM SYSTEM WILL BE IGNORED. The Forums are there for a reason!
Thanks-
