Just Joined

-My friends think I'm a computer genius.
Of course it just means that I know a bit more than them.

I just helped my 72 year old neighbor off the AOL and I have joined to seek more help getting rid of the Fake Microsoft Security Essentials Alert Trojan and AntiSpySafeguard program.
Not only did my friend get the virus, but he paid $60 bucks and installed their recommended AntiSpySafeguard program.

I will be posting in XP help for help with removing registry entries.

I have used all the steps outlined here:
but apparently I need to also remove the registry entries and maybe the user profile files listed.

as a bonus the laptop I am working on goes dark without shutting off wen i partially close the lid and will not come back to display mode

Thanks to the creators of this site for the resource!

Thanks for the Welcome Budapest,

I poked around a bit and found this guide:
of things to do before posting for help.

I enabled email notification, but the rest is too much for me for tonight.

I may just forge ahead with regedit and the list of registry entries without instructions found here:

I'm not really sure what to do with %UserProfile% files --but I may poke around there in the AM.

this is a Dell Win XP Laptop and it belongs to a different friend than the 72 year old i referred to above..
I have an additional resource here in the form of my 23 year old son who is a comp science college graduate and a part time sys admin for a Technical Highschool. --- He is usually out swinging from trees and vines, but will help when i can pin him down.

Welcome to the site, I'm pretty new here myself. I am not new to pcs and actually work on them, but there is a great amount of information here. If you need help with something with the registry keys or anything like that feel free to shoot me a pm.
