This is not being posted from the Infected PC, it's being posted from a clean laptop, as I cannot actually post a topic in the "Virus, Trojan, Spyware, and Malware Removal Logs" section of the forums from the infected PC.
Thankfully I could create topics in other sections without issue, and Blade Zephon was able to find a way round this posting problem. :D (Here's the topic in which Blade helped me btw
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic349877.html)

Anyway, here's what I transferred over from the Infected PC.

----------------------------------------------

I've just written a massive detailed post regarding my problems, but when I clicked Post New Topic, I got sent to a "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" page, and when I pressed back I discovered post had been eaten. killcomp.gif
I'll do my best to remember it and retype it.....

Right, time for some confessions.

Basically we got a virus on this PC about two months ago and immediately set about ignoring it.
It has become apparent that this was not a long term solution to the problem. poster_oops.gif
Recently we've been having problems running some java programs, sudden surges in CPU usage, random pop-up browsers, and random redirects when clicking on Google links.
All of this means we can no longer continue to neglect the PC's problems as we have done thus far, so I come to you for help sad.gif
I suspect that there are other nasties on the PC as well, but the only thing I have proof of is this Tidserv thing so i'll focus on that.

(This is the bit where I had a massive wall of text detailing the history of the problem over the last few months, but I can't remember all of what I typed, so i've shaved it down a bit.)

The first time Backdoor.Tidserv is mention in Norton's Security History log is 13/05/2010

After this there were regular "A recent attempt to attack your computer was blocked" messages, most notably whenever we googled anything, but apart from that the PC seemed fine.
Things continued like this until about a month ago, when we were suddenly infected with AV Security Suite. (We neglected to record the date at which this happened, so I can't be any more specific than about a month ago. I could probably find some clues in Norton's Security History, but at the time of writing it's 3:00 AM and I can't be bothered right now. :3 )
We followed this Self Help Guide: ( http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-remo...-security-suite ) and were able to successfully remove AV Security Suite. Malwarebytes also seemed to take out this tidserv virus, but upon restarting the computer, Norton gave us a warning that Backdoor.Tidserv.l!inf had been quarantined, but manual removal was required to finish the job.
After reading a removal guide on the Symantec website, we thought that it looked a bit complicated, and decided to ignore the problem instead.
This solution seemed to be working up until recently, as I have said above, we started having problems running some java programs, sudden surges in CPU usage, random pop-up browsers, and random redirects when clicking on Google links.

As your guide for removing AV Security Suite worked so well, I decided to come to you guys for help with this problem as well. :D

We've followed the instructions in this thread, apart from step 8, without any problems: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic34773.html

When attempting to complete step 8 and Create a GMER log the PC slowed to a snailís pace after I opened GMER, taking up to 20 minutes to respond to my actions. This turned out to be due to CPU usage shooting up to 100%.

On the first attempt I made two mistakes. Firstly, I forgot to close IE, and secondly, I minimized GMER. After finding I could not re-maximize GMER, or do anything for that matter, I tried to close IE explorer using the task manager, hoping that would help. After 30 minutes of trying to open task manager to no avail, I gave up and restarted. (Turned the PC off and on again)

On the second attempt, I forgot to disable the Screen Saver. After moving the mouse to get rid of it, I was returned to a blank desktop with no taskbar, icons, or anything other than the background. After 20 minutes of trying to get the PC to respond and failing, I restarted again. (Off and on again)

On the third attempt, I let GMER run without any other programs up, which seemed to work well until I returned to the PC an hour later to find a bluescreen, which I closed without reading. (And immediately regretted poster_oops.gif )

On the fourth attempt, I opened Task Manager before I opened GMER so I could keep an eye on the CPU usage in the Processes tab and the Performance tab. About 1 minute after opening GMER, CPU usage shot up to 100%. I wrote down the names of the things eating up the CPU:
ccSvcHst.exe was using up about 30 to 51 CPU and 21300k Mem usage
Another ccSvcHst was using up about 20 to 30 CPU and about 9000 Mem usage.
lsass.exe also used up some CPU
rundll32.exe occasionally used up some CPU, as did svchost.exe

I then got bored and left for a few hours. Upon my return, the scan was still running, but a few seconds after my arrival, it bluescreened. D: But I read this one :D
It said:

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

The problem seems to have been caused by the following file: pgtdapod.sys

PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA

I did write down all the text that was on the screen, but this is the second time i'm writing this post and it's now 3:08 AM so I won't type it all out. Instead, i'll just wrap this post up. x_x

Without further ado, the DDS.txt log:

P.S. Sorry for the wall of text up at the top there. I wasn't sure how detailed you wanted it when you said "write a detailed description of your problem" so I went all out. (There was even more text up there in my first revision busy.gif ) If it's too much info, sorry. :3 Equally, if you need any more information, please say so and i'll do my best to provide it.

(This is also being posted from the clean laptop. It seems that the problem was not that the Infected PC cannot create topics in this section of the forum, but that the Infected PC cannot make long posts, such as ones with these Logs copied into them.)

Hello!

There's no need to apologise for the delay, I understand that there's more help requests than there are helpers.
That said, let me apologise for the delay on my end. Busy weekend. :S

I'm already tracking this topic so I skipped the options bit, and I've already got Defogger and DDS downloaded, so I skipped downloading those and just re-ran them.

When running RKUnHooker I did get a "Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself! It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?" message. I clicked cancel and got the error message "Program integrity damaged!"

Greetings

One or more of the identified infections is Known as a Backdoor Trojan. - TDSS rootkit <--please read

What this virus does do.
QUOTE
Functionality
The functionality that the Trojan exhibits implies that it has been designed with profit-making as its primary objective. Making money from the Web typically involves generating Web traffic, installing pay-per-install software and also by generating sales leads for other Web sites and services of a dubious nature. It tries to achieve its objective by employing an array of techniques to try and make the user participate in these income-generating activities.

What the virus can do.
QUOTE
Backdoor.Tidserv is a Trojan horse that uses an advanced rootkit to hide itself. It also displays advertisements, redirects user search results, and opens a back door on the compromised computer.

This "could" allow hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can clean this machine but I cannot guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. "If you would like to continue, then follow the steps below, otherwise please let me know"

I Would like you to do the following.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links.
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"
In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

Gringo

(This is being posted from the Infected PC. Apparently Combofix got rid of whatever was stopping us from making long posts from it.)

Hello again!

We decided to continue with the disinfection rather than re-format, as this PC is not really used for anything important. (And we'd probably choose buying a new PC over re-formatting this one as it's quite old.)
We were asked to write down the name of a file that needed a restart to be completely removed:
"Service: Disk
File: C:\WINDOWS\system32\DRIVERS\disk.sys"

Also, after restarting the computer and when Combofix had just "Completed Stage 2", we had an error message pop up that read
"PEV.cfxxe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." then asked us to send a report to Microsoft etc. So we did that.

Not sure if any of that information is of any use to you :D

Combofix then completed it's scan, restarted, and created a log without any other notable occurances.

I've been testing the PC out for about 30 minutes now and I'm not getting any of the problematic symptoms I mentioned in my first post. (I.E. random redirects when clicking on Google links, random pop-up browsers, sudden surges in CPU usage and problems running some java programs.)
The java programs that were previously presenting us with error messages are now able to open and run without any problems. That said 30 minutes testing isn't that long. I'll be able to tell you how the PC is doing with more confidence tomorrow, but right now, it seems fine.

Here's the Combofix log:

Greetings

Good That cleaned up some bad guys but I see some other stuff that we need to go after, so I want you to run this custom script for me.

:Run CFScript:

Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the box into the window:

CODE
uInternet Settings,ProxyServer = http=127.0.0.1:5577
uInternet Settings,ProxyOverride = <local>

Save it to your desktop as CFScript.txt

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe

This will let ComboFix run again.
Restart if you have to.
Save the produced logfile to your desktop.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

"information and logs"
In your next post I need the following
    1. report from Combofix
    2. let me know of any problems you may have had
    3. How is the computer doing now after running the script?

Gringo

Hello again!

Please accept my apologies for this terribly delayed response, a surprise visit from some relatives has stolen our attention these last few days.

I just tried running Combofix again with that custom script, and I've been met with a pop-up saying

"Update
There's a newer version of ComboFix available.

Would you like to update Combofix?"

I wasn't sure if updating would screw up the custom script somehow, so I thought "Better safe than sorry", closed ComboFix and posted this.

Should I say Yes or No? unsure.gif

Hi again.

I've just run Combofix with that custom script again, clicked yes to the update, but then encountered some problems during the scan.

We didn't need to restart this time, but we did get the same "PEV.cfxxe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." pop-up around the the "Completed Stage 2" mark again.

It ran all the way through to step 50 and started deleting files, but after deleting two files, it stopped for a few minutes, then gave us a Bluescreen.

I did write down all the text that was on the screen, but i'll try to only give you the useful bits here:

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

*Generic Bluescreen advice*

Technical information:
*** STOP: 0x0000000A (0x00000016, 0x0000001C, 0x00000000, 0x80502EB4)

Beginning dump of physical memory
Physical memory dump complete.
Contact your system administrator or technical support group for further assistance.

After restarting I got the:
"Microsoft Windows
The system has recovered from a serious error
A log of this error has been created.
Please send us the report blah blah blah"
pop-up. So I sent that, came here and posted this.

If you need more info, let me know. I can try to remember the names of the two files Combofix deleted before the Bluescreen if you need 'em.

Hello

Ok lets try this, I want you to run combofix in safe mode but it is very important that when combofix reboots the computer for you to direct it back into safe mode so it can finish the scan.

Boot into Safe Mode

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.

after combofix has finished its scan please post the report back here.

Hello

Erm, I've just got back to the PC to try running Combofix in Safe Mode, and apparently Norton has been doing an idle time scan and has found something noteworthy.
I've got a pop-up that reads:

Norton Internet Security

Action Required

Norton Internet Security has detected threats that
require your attention.

Threat Details

Risk: High
Title: Backdoor.Tidserv.l!inf requires manual removal.
Status: Review
Action: Get Help (Or I can choose to Rescan)

Is this anything to be concerned about? Or should I just ignore it and continue with trying Combofix in Safe Mode.

Speaking of which, when you say "run combofix in safe mode" do you mean run it with the custom script, or just run it without like the first time we ran it?

I bet it is in system restore and is not a problem, anyway keep with combofix.
