Thanks all for maintaining this forum. About 2 weeks ago I noticed a series of browser redirects in IE8. These seemed to be related to the presence of Clicksor and some other cookies on my hard drive. Tried several methods to fix the problem including SuperAntiSpyware, MalWareBytes and others. SuperAntiSpyware found and eliminated the problems, but they re-occured almost immediatly.

So I bought a new drive and did a clean XP install, got up and running and... same browser redirects. So I wiped the drive again, disconnected the PC from all other devices on the home network, bought a new flash drive (just to be sure) and installed all programs again either from the new flash drive or from CD. And... same browser redirects.

I got to this forum from Highjack This, and I'm hoping someone on the boards can assist. I'm fresh out of ideas.

In case this is pertinent, I can wipe these cookies with SuperAntiSpyware and surf Wikipedia for as long as I wish with no browser redirects. CNN for example starts attempting to redirect almost instantly. Chrome exhibits the same redirection behavior.

I read the Preparation Guide and tried to follow it closely. Thanks again,

Bob Gercak

Thank you very much for the response. After I posted my request for help, I continue to Google around in search of an answer. "Rootkit Clicksor" turned out to be the magic search. It appears that my computer had been part of a spambot and I was being redirected to an evil DNS server somewhere. A change in my DNS server fixed the problem and it hasn't yet recurred.

Again, thank you for the response,

Bob

Greetings

One or more of the identified infections is Known as a Backdoor Trojan. - TDSS rootkit <--please read

What this virus does do.
QUOTE
Functionality
The functionality that the Trojan exhibits implies that it has been designed with profit-making as its primary objective. Making money from the Web typically involves generating Web traffic, installing pay-per-install software and also by generating sales leads for other Web sites and services of a dubious nature. It tries to achieve its objective by employing an array of techniques to try and make the user participate in these income-generating activities.

What the virus can do.
QUOTE
Backdoor.Tidserv is a Trojan horse that uses an advanced rootkit to hide itself. It also displays advertisements, redirects user search results, and opens a back door on the compromised computer.

This "could" allow hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can clean this machine but I cannot guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. "If you would like to continue, then follow the steps below, otherwise please let me know"

I Would like you to do the following.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links.
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"
In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

Gringo

Thank you for the fast reply. I've already taken the passwords steps you indicated. Anything that tries to grab hold of my browser is criminal in my estimation.

It's been three weeks of this. I'm worn out. I'm thinking about going to the Apple Store tomorrow and tossing my credit card down. I don't know what else to do.

Sorry to sound so down yesterday.

I've already replaced the drive in this PC and done an XP install from scratch. Even after that, the new drive picked up the infection again right away. The new drive is now BSOD on boot with an apparently fraudulent chkdsk error, which appears to be part of this infection. So I'm booting from the old (and still infected) drive again. I can access the new BSOD drive, so I could format it and start again if that might work. I have access to spare computers and spare drives. If there's a way to brute force a clean install that I could make stay clean, that would be my preference.

I have 2 NAS for the computers in the house and I'm concerned that whatever it is might be hiding there. Where else could it be? The BIOS?

Now one of the other computers in the house is coming up with some of the same cookies (Clicksor for one), but it hasn't displayed any symptoms yet. That PC is running Windows 7, which might be the difference.

You wrote: "We can clean this machine but I cannot guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards". I appreciate your candor.

I'm trying to get a feel for the repair path, since I'm trying to decide whether or not to throw in the towel on PCs after over 25 years. My first PC ran DOS 2.0 back in 1985, so it's a tough decision for me, but I'm at wit's end.

Thanks again for your help, and for listening to me vent,

Bob

Hello

very sorry for the delay in responding. Real life gets in the way sometimes.

ok, Lets slow down for a min. You say the computer gets infected right away - How do you know this - your antivirus is giving you warnings. You are getting redirects?

Lets work on one machine with one set of harddrives just give me a chance and I will get it clean

I don't have an exact answer for you. When I swapped out the drives on 9/28, I thought that I had Killed It With Fire. I spent a few hours over the next week restoring the software on the new drive (itunes, acrobat, etc etc) and just as I was getting completely comfortable with the new system being clean, I discovered the same problem on 10/4, with all the same symptoms. So it's not immediate, but it happens quickly.

My wife and I are really boring PC users: web-based businesss email, CNN, NY Times, Thunderbird, MS OFfice, totally the usual - nothing dicey, no warez, no torrents, no pron.

No one else uses our computer, especially the kids, especially after this episode.

Browser re-directs are still an issue, but the system is otherwise usable, with some glitches. I am booting from the "old drive" at this point on this machine, with the "new" drive in a (powered down) docking station. So the old files are readily available, and as I said, I have some older machines that we can sacrifice if it is necessary.

Thank you again.

Bob

Thank you again,

Bob

Hello

I think two things are going on.

1 the original set of logs has a MBR based infection and I have seen with this infection the router settings get changed.

so I want a new set of logs so I know where we are with the computer and I would like you to run this batch file so I can Check the router

we are going to check the router

Create and Run Batch File
Open Notepad and copy/paste the entire contents of the codebox below, into Notepad:
CODE
@echo off
>Log1.txt (
ipconfig /all
nslookup google.com
nslookup yahoo.com
ping -n 2 google.com
ping -n 2 yahoo.com
route print
)
start Log1.txt
del %0
Save this as router.bat Choose to Save type as - All Files and where to save - Desktop - then close the Notepad file.

It should look like this: <--XP
Double-click on router.bat to run it. it will open notepad when done please post back the results
