This problem started last week when all my searches were redirected to various ad sites. When I wasn't able to run my Malwarebytes, I went to the library to research the problem. From a post in your forum, I downloaded another Malwarebytes, ATF and SAS. Since then I have tried so many things--I will try to remember them all in some order.

Still had trouble with Malwarebytes, so I ran AFT and SAS. After I figured out that if I copied a website's url into the address line rather than trying to search, I could connect with sites. Downloaded and ran AVG. Kept coming up with 6 'unfixable' problems. Ran RKill from each link in the forum, so about 6 times, and ran Fixit. I found and ran Microsoft Scanner which found 6 unfixable threats. Finally figured out what I was doing wrong with renaming the mbam.exe and scanned with Malwarebytes which found and quarantined 6 problems which I deleted. Hoped I was home free, but still had the problem. Ran most of the above again. Malewarebytes showed no problems. Microsoft found only 3 now.

I have followed all the steps in your 'read first'. My firewall is enabled, I ran Defogger. Also ran DDS and GMER (logs attached). BUT I haven't backed up. Not enough room on thumb drive and now I'm having trouble with CD drive--bleeping computer! If I weren't unemployed right not, I'd throw it out the window and run over it with my car! However, since I really need it, I'm begging for help.

Thanks,

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Please refrain from running tools or applying updates other than those we suggest while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process. Please also continue to work with me until I give you the all clear. Even if your computer appears to act better, you may still be infected.

Even if you have already provided information about your PC, we need a new log to see what has changed since you originally posted your problem.

Once we start working together, please reply back within 3 days or this thread may be closed so we can help others who are waiting.

We need to create an OTL report,
  • Please download OTL from this link.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the icon on your desktop.
  • Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  • Under the Custom Scan box paste this in:

    /md5stop
    %systemroot%\*. /mp /s
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU
    CREATERESTOREPOINT

  • Click the Quick Scan button.
  • The scan should take a few minutes.
  • Please copy and paste both logs in your reply.
We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit scanner. Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new OTL log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

In your reply, please post both OTL logs and the GMER log.

Hello, x_tine43.

Are you still having redirects when you search? I wasn't 100% sure from your original note if it went away with the last set of scans. Can you please confirm?

I can't guarantee that we will not lose data at some point, so I want to point out that you are knowingly continuing to proceed without a backup. I won't instruct you do do anything I wouldn't do on my own computer, but there is that small risk we we end up a major issue. We'll proceed with a deeper scan, assuming you're still getting redirected.

Finally, the OTL log is cut off. Please attach the full OTL log in your reply.

Step 1

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link 1
alternate download link 2

MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you. Temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the definition updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply. Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows MBAM's database version and your operating system.
  • Exit MBAM when done.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be asked to reboot your computer so MBAM can proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Step 2

Scan With RKUnHooker
  • Please Rootkit Unhooker and save it to your desktop.
  • Now double-click on RKUnhookerLE.exe to run it.
  • Click the Report tab, then click Scan.
  • Check (Tick) Drivers, Stealth. Uncheck the rest. then Click OK.
  • Wait till the scanner has finished and then click File, Save Report.
  • Save the report somewhere where you can find it. Click Close.

Copy the entire contents of the report and paste it in a reply here.

Note** you may get this warning it is ok, just ignore

QUOTE
"Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself!
It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?"

Step 3

Please download MBRCheck by ad_13 and save it to your desktop.

Double-click to run. A window will pop up. If it says 'non-standard' or 'infected' MBR code detected, please type 3 for Exit for now and press Enter.

It will save a logfile on your desktop that starts with MBR, then has the date, etc. Please copy and paste the contents of that log in your reply.

Hi again,

Yes, I am still having the redirect problem. I hope you don't mind that I ask a few questions about the backup first. I tried again yesterday to perform a backup. My thumb drive holds about 90% of my files and settings, but not a whole system backup. My CD-ROM drive is not working--when there's no disc in the drive, it alerts that there is but if I put a disc in to perform the backup, it keeps asking for a disc--like it's in reverse. I thought it might be a driver problem, but the system says it's working properly (obviously not). I tried researching but am just not sure enough of what I'm doing. I'm not even sure if the drivers come from Windows XP or from Dell. I did find one site, something like Drive Doctor, but it cost $29.95 and that's not an option right now. Do you know of anything I can try? If we proceed without a backup, is the whole system at risk? Or just my files and settings? I'd obviously prefer to be backed up if I can figure it out.

While I wait for your reply, I will run Malwarebytes (already on computer) and clean out some files and clutter.

Thanks!

None of the scans above should require a backup. I would not back up your whole system, but only your documents and media. Do NOT back up anything in C:\windows, system files (DLL, SYS) or program files (EXE, COM, BAT, SCR, PIF, etc.) as these are at much higher risk of containing a virus. Only back up your documents, photos, music, videos, saved game files, that kind of thing.

Hello, x_tine43.

The RKU site appears to be down right now.

Step 1

Make sure you have backed up what you want to.

Step 2

Next, please download ComboFix from one of these locations:* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop as etavaresCF.exe
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. (Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive.)
  • Double click on etavaresCF.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply, along with any symptoms that are present after it runs.

Here's the ComboFix.txt log. It did install Windows Recovery Console and rebooted twice. Haven't seen anything unusual, but I haven't tried any searches.

Hello, x_tine43.

Please try a few searches...you had a backdoor rootkit but Combofix fixed what it could see. You should be able to search okay. However, I must warn you about the backdoor rootkit.

Backdoor Warning
One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can still clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. Let me know what you decide to do. If you do decide to proceed, please continue with the fix below.

Trusted Zone Warning

Having trusted sites may not be a good idea. The reason why I say it's not a good idea is because the security settings for the internet is not extremely high and once you put a site in your trusted zone, basically almost anymore or thing, including hackers or other malicious software have full access to that site which can lead to hijacking that site and may even have access to your computer. Are you sure you trust a site to that degree?

It is recommended NOT to have ANY sites in your Trusted Zone unless the site requires it to function properly and you trust it very well. Other than that, it is not necessary for you to add any sites into the trusted zone. If you're not sure, and/or you do not need these in your trusted zone to facilitate access or you did not knowingly permit this access yourself, then please remove those sites from your trusted zone.

They can be accessed in Internet Explorer via Tools>>Internet Options>>Security>>Trusted Zone>>Sites. Remove if there are any there.

Well, this is obviously not what I wanted to hear. Since another computer is not a option right now, I have some questions. First questions won't help fix the problem but may help me understand enough to avoid it in the future. My Windows Defender firewall has been active since I've had the computer and my isp is Verizon FIOS which also has a firewall, so how do these backdoor rootkits get on the computer in the first place? Does anti-virus or spyware block it?

Anyway, this is a laptop but I never got around to setting up the wireless (it was on my last laptop, but I didn't get around to it on this one). So if I disconnect it from the internet when I'm only using it for MS Office and printing, does that help? I never open email I don't know, but still need to connect to pick up mail and do some searching. I won't use it anymore to access bank accounts or pay bills. If we continue with the fix, does this reduce my risk until I'm able to get a new computer--it could be months.

Should I worry about encrypted social security numbers?

Finally, since I may not know about identity theft for some time, should I report this? The one file you sent gave several places to report. Since I don't know if I've been compromised, where should I start reporting (other than my bank and other accounts that I've used online)?

Thanks for your patience and help. I only had two trusted sites and they're gone now, so to continue you want me to run ComboFix again, right?

Sorry if I asked too many questions in my last post. I would like to continue to clean my computer. I've tried a few searches with no problems. I've removed my two trusted sites and the log from rerunning ComboFix is below. Thanks

Hello, x_tine43.

Rootkits and viruses are always evolving. New ones are created hourly. (Well, new viruses are created hourly. The more intricate rootkits seem to come out every month or so.) Antiviruses are about 95% effective at detecting and blocking malware that is 2+ weeks old. They're only about 50/50 at stopping new malware. How do you know something is malicious until it's out there? They have heuristic detections...programs that appear to be doing things they shouldn't. But, rootkits are harder to stop since they operate underneath Windows. Without getting too technical, they're hard to spot from a typical program. Verizon FIOS has an inbound firewall. An outgoing firewall will help protect you better. Inbound firewalls prevent against computers that scan IP addresses for comptuers to infect. That will hide your comptuer and ignore the scan from the computer. However, if you click on an infected file, go to an infected webpage, click a link you shouldn't have, that's an OUTbound request and will be allowed by your firewall...after all, a router that blocks all your outbound requests defeats the purpose of an internet connection. You can install a third party firewall when we're done, but you'll have to manually decide whether or not to allow each program to access the internet.

It's hard to say what the risk is. In some cases, nothing comes of it. In other cases, keep an eye out for identity theft and credit card fraud. Keep an eye on your back accounts. You should do this anyway. The real issue is that we can clean what we can see....but if a virus is perfectly written, we wouldn't know it exists. So, the second you plug into the internet, there is nothing as 100% safe. Smart web surfing (ensure you know where the link goes before clicking, don't open emails that are gramatically incorrect or include a file from someone you've never heard of, etc.) will all help. I'm not entirely sure where to start reporting...thankfully it hasn't happened to me. Yet. If you let them know, they can keep an eye out as well. Up to you.

PS> don't worry about asking questions. That's what I'm here for.

Step 2

Next, we need to update Java.
Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 21 and save it to your desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says "JDK 6 Update 21 (JDK or JRE)...allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download JRE" button to the right.
  • Select your Platform: "Windows".
  • Select your Language: "Multi-language".
  • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • Click Continue and the page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) or Java™ in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u21-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

Step 2

Please pull anything out of the recycle bin that you want to save. Part of this fix will empty temp files, and that does include the recycle bin.

We need run an OTL Script
  1. Please download OTL from one of the following mirrors if you do not still have it.
  2. Save it to your desktop.
  3. Double click on the icon on your desktop.
  4. Paste the following code under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom. Do not include the word "Code".
    CODE
    :reg
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\security center]
    "AntiVirusOverride"=0
    :OTL

O16 - DPF: CabBuilder http://www.imgag.com/kiw/toolbar/download/...llerControl.cab (Reg Error: Key error.)
    O18 - Protocol\Handler\avgsecuritytoolbar {F2DDE6B2-9684-4A55-86D4-E255E237B77C} - Reg Error: Key error. File not found
    :Commands
    [EmptyTemp]
  5. Click the Run Fix button at the top.
  6. let the program run unhindered and reboot when it is done.
  7. You will get a log when it is done, please post that in your reply.
  8. Please then create a new OTL report....
  9. Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  10. Push the button.
  11. A report will open, copy and paste it in a reply here.

Step 3

Please go to the Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.
  1. Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  2. It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  3. When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  4. Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
    Archives
  5. Click on My Computer under Scan.
  6. Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  7. You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  8. Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  9. Please post this log in your next reply.

Note: Kaspersky online scan may take time to complete, please be patient.

Sounds like the bad guys stay two steps ahead. Thanks for all the info, it is very helpful. One more question: if the browser is closed am I still at risk or should I unplug the connection when I'm not using internet?

Tried to uninstall Java from add/remove programs. It looked like it was working, then just came back to the list with Java still there. Rebooted and the same thing happened a couple times. When I list Programs, it isn't there, but still displays on the add/remove list. I have the link for the update on my desktop but haven't downloaded yet. I don't even know if I need it. I only downloaded a few months ago for an online class.

Here are the two OTL reports and the Kaspersky report. Once again, thanks.
