Hi Guys,

I am re-posting this as it was earleir placed in the wrong place. Will really really appreciate help....

I am facing a problem here, some of my softwares (microsoft security esssentials) and my browsers (firefox, google chrome) cannot be opened. This error message appears

The application or DLL c:\windows\winsxs\x86_microsoft windows.gdiplus_6595b64144ccf1df_1.0.6001.22319_x-ww_f0b4c2df\gdiplus.dll is not a valid windows image. please check this against your installation diskette.

I first have to admit that the cause of this malfunction is my own fault, i was too impatient... while shredding some large files, my pc took a longer time that i am expecting and i did a restart by powering off and on...

i have also attached a screen shot of the error message

Wondering if I can get any help here. Thank you in advance!

This error occurs when your "The application or DLL c:\windows\winsxs\x86_microsoft windows.gdiplus_6595b64144ccf1df_1.0.6001.22319_x-ww_f0b4c2df\gdiplus.dll" file is corrupt.

This is a security update for your GDI+ addressed in Microsoft Security Bulletin MS09-062. To fix this corruption, download and reinstall Security Update for Windows XP (KB958869).

I also wonder, why your programs are looking for gdiplus.dll file in backup folder.
It may be a result of your monkeying around.
Normally, gdiplus.dll is located in C:\Windows\System32

Go Start>Run ("Start Search" in Vista/7), type in:
sfc /scannow
Click OK (hold CTRL, and SHIFT, hit Enter in Vista/7).
Have Windows CD/DVD handy (with Vista/7, most likely, you won't need it).
If System File Checker (sfc) will find any errors, it may ask you for the CD/DVD (rarely in Vista/7 case).

Probably a result of system file protection trying to restore the file he has from the backup and finding it was corrupt would be my guess.

Reinstall the Service pack then see what other files need fixing with SFC.

hi Gabrial and Broni,

I reinstalled the service pack and system prompted for a PC restart. Upon completion of restart, I see this error message (see file - 'bad image error msg at restart').

then, I did the SFC run and a black dos screen flash out and disappear again in less than 1 second. managed to do a screen grab of this (see attached - 'SFC screen shot')

your advise is appreciated!

I would reinstall Zone Alarm, and see if that fixes the Zone Labs error.

You need to run sfc /scannow

you just ran sfc and it prompted you with all the options denoted by /<option name here>

I'd also travel to "Am I infected?" forum to make sure, your computer is clean.

Yeah, there are some malware infections that actually pop up fake messages about files being corrupt. Head over to Am I Infected? too....

but first, reinstall zone alarm. You could have bad RAM as well, but we'll get to that after you reinstall. Since you said it started with killing the power on the drive while it was writing and corruption in the filesystem, it's not likely you have bad RAM, but still possible.

Edit:

These files were probably corrected (though corrupted) in the last Autochk disk scan that occured (the one where it forces you to run CHKDSK on boot while windows is loading).

To see what other files were effected, you can find out by looking in System Event Viewer.

Click Start -> Control Panel

Double-Click Administrative Tools.

Double-Click Event Viewer.

In the event viewer, click "Applications" on the left hand side.

Look through the event log for an event listed with the source "Winlogon" and the Event ID 1001. Double click on this entry and you will find the CHKDSK log in the Description.

Copy and paste the CHKDSK log into your next message and I'll help you figure out what you need to reinstall.

It looks like most of the corruption was is your restore points and uninstallers. Would be a good idea to set a system restore point now.

These are the files I'd be most concerned about:

Windows replaced bad clusters in file 17481
of name \WINDOWS\system32\dllcache\comsvcs.dll.

Windows replaced bad clusters in file 22719
of name \WINDOWS\system32\dllcache\strmdll.dll.

Windows replaced bad clusters in file 31696
of name \WINDOWS\system32\dllcache\msxml3.dll.

Windows replaced bad clusters in file 44966
of name \WINDOWS\system32\dllcache\shell32.dll.

Windows replaced bad clusters in file 47899
of name \WINDOWS\system32\dllcache\msoe.dll.

If any of these system files get corrupted or changed, system file protection will try to copy them from the dllcache. These ones are corrupted so it will ask you to insert your windows CD to get good copies.

Do you have SP3 installed? If you don't know look at "System" in your Control Panel. Under the Version line it will tell you which Service Pack you have installed.

If it's not installed yet, I would install it as all of these should be included in the SP3 update and will fix the issue.

If it's already installed, let me know and I will help you in changing the sourcepath entry in your registry so it will copy the good copies from your \i386 folder instead of your dllcache.

Time to replace the hard drive and start over from scratch. I wouldn't even bother fixing this one, as it could make things worse.

Yeah, probably the best course of action at this point is to back up data you want to keep and install your OS again then put in the updates. Unfortunately MS doesn't have a way to easily remove updates when the uninstaller is corrupt.

You have alot of corruption in your installer directories, and system file protection will use this install path after it checks the dllcache for a good copy of the file when one of your system files changes.

You are likely to run into the same type of "not a valid windows image" errors in the future.

Do you have a c:\Windows\i386 directory? This is where the SP3 setup files are usually stored. You should back up your registry with a third party registry program like Erunt.

Then load regedit and navigate to the key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup

There is a value under this key called "SourcePath". This is probably set the the CDRom drive path that Windows was set up from. Simply change it to the path where your \i386 directory can be found. Such as:

C:\Windows\

if you have your SP3 install files in C:\Windows\i386\.

Then close your registry editor and the next time system file protection goes to grab a file from your install path, it will grab it from there instead.
