I have been infected with something that redirects my Google searches to other pages... ads for products, mostly. I have no idea how to get rid of this thing, and none of the antiv-antimal programs I've tried have recognized a problem. There are some other behaviors that have started since this that I'm guessing are also a result of this infection. Here are some details:

* links in a Google search get redirected to web pages selling things. During the redirect, the icon at the left of the address bar (in Firefox) looks like an untied loop of string.

* about 20 or 30 minutes after a reboot, I lose ability to access the net, with any program that accesses the net. The program simply sits forever waiting for a response. Rebooting solves the problem, at least until next time.

* about 20 or 30 minutes after a reboot (usually before I lose the net connection) I get a message that "Generic Host for Win32 Processes has encountered an error and has been shut down." After that happens, various parts of Windows Explorer, usually down on the task bar, start to lose the standard XP blue-with-rounded-corners look and reverting to a primitive tan-with-square-corners-and-low-resolution sort of skin for the Windows Explorer Interface. Once again, rebooting solves this problem, until the next time.

* every once in a while, my computer reboots itself; there's no particular amount of time between these spontaneous reboots that I've noticed. When it happens, I get a momentary glimpse of a "blue screen of death" with some low-res text and what looks like a small hex dump (it's too quick to be sure of any details) then it goes black and starts the reboot process.

I'm running Windows XP, SP 3

Below are the various logs as specified in the "how to" thread, with the exception of GMER. For some reason, I can't get GMER to behave properly.

The first time, GMER took 3 hours to complete and when I clicked "save" it went away into a "not responding" state. After waiting 30 minutes just to be sure, I found I had to do a complete power down and cold boot to get the system to respond to anything.

The second time, I'm not sure if GMER ran to completion or not; when I checked back on it about 3 hours after I started it, there were some nested error messages from Windows telling me there wasn't enough room on the hard disk to complete an operation (I have 116 gig free) and then that my hard drive had suffered a hardware failure and was not accessible. A cold boot solved that problem, but left me without a GMER log to post.

I've pasted / attached the other logs and hope it's enough to at least get started, and perhaps with some preliminary fixes, GMER can be run successfully. Or do you have an alternate to GMER, or suggestions on how to run it in a different way so it will complete properly?

Thank you VERY much for your time and help.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer! welcome.gif

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit scanner. Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

I did disable virtual cd using defogger

Below are the various logs as specified in the "how to".

Thank you VERY much for your time and help.

avast! Free Antivirus and COMODO Internet Security are both installed in your system, did you install the Anti Virus of COMODO or just the Firewall?

============================================

1. We need to disable Spybot S&D's "TeaTimer"
TeaTimer works by preventing ANY changes to the system. It will attempt to undo any fixes we run, because it blocks these fixes from running.

In order to safeguard your system from problems that can be brought on by a half finished fix, we need to disable TeaTimer. We can reenable it when we're done if you like.
  1. Open SpyBot Search and Destroy by going to Start -> All Programs -> Spybot Search and Destroy -> Spybot Search and Destroy.
  2. If prompted with a legal dialog, accept the warning.
  3. Click and then on "Advanced Mode"
  4. You may be presented with a warning dialog. If so, press
  5. Click on
  6. Click on
  7. Uncheck this checkbox:
  8. Close/Exit Spybot Search and Destroy

2. Please download Combofix, reboot your computer in safe mode and run it.

Download Combofix (by Subs) from any of the links below, make sure that you save it to your desktop.
Link 1
Link 2

  • It's important to temporary disable your anti-virus and anti-malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. See HERE
  • Close any open windows, including this one.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed.
*It's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal.
*The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode.
*This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures. If you did not have it installed, you will see the prompt below. Choose YES.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
  • When prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you. Please post the contents of the log (C:\ComboFix.txt).

Important notes:
  1. Leave your computer alone while ComboFix is running.
  2. ComboFix will restart your computer if malware is found; allow it to do so.
  3. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
  4. Please do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running because it may call it to stall.
  5. ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper. See HERE.

Back when I downloaded Comodo, it was just the firewall. Would you recommend ditching Avast! and going with a suite of Comodo applications?

"If I like?" Is there some reason I shouldn't want to re-enable it?

Done... sort of. I couldn't get it to run in Safe Mode, but it did run in normal mode. Log file below.

Hi,

QUOTE
Back when I downloaded Comodo, it was just the firewall. Would you recommend ditching Avast! and going with a suite of Comodo applications?

Thanks for clarifying that you only installed the firewall and no need to make any changes if you're not having any problem.

"If I like?" Is there some reason I shouldn't want to re-enable it?

No, there's no reason and it's helpful. That instruction is created for general user.

===================================

1. Launch Notepad, and copy/paste the contents of the codebox below (do not include the word code) into a new text file. Save it on your Desktop as fixme.reg. For the "save as type" choose all files

CODE
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\security center]
"AntiVirusOverride"=-

  • Locate fixme.reg on your Desktop and double-click on it.
  • You will receive a prompt similar to: "Do you wish to merge the information into the registry?".
  • Answer "Yes" and wait for a message to appear similar to "Merged Successfully".

2. I'd like us to scan your machine with ESET OnlineScan
  1. Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESET OnlineScan
  2. Click the button.
  3. For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    1. Click on to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    2. Double click on the icon on your desktop.
  4. Check
  5. Click the button.
  6. Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  7. Check
  8. Push the Start button.
  9. ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  10. When the scan completes, push
  11. Push , and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  12. Push the button.
  13. Push

Yes, I'm sorry, work has been crazy this week (and I'm at the office this morning, Saturday) but should have time later this afternoon to apply the last fixes/scans and reply. My apologies!
