I have a laptop running Windows Vista and am using Firefox 3.6.10 as my main browser.

For the past few weeks I have been experiencing new browser windows opening seemingly at random, at least once an hour. These start off with a URL of search.google-analytics.com and then redirect to a variety of different sites. Also (not sure whether this is connected, but it started around the same time) some sites that use scripts have started to open and load in Firefox and then the browser screen will go blank.

At present I have added a local redirect for search.google-analytics.com to my hosts file so that the popups are at least stopping when they first open rather than loading up goodness-knows-what sites, and I have installed the Firefox Noscript extension so that the sites that would not display at all are now doing so. But I know this isn't fixing the underlying problem.

At around the time this all started I did have three infections that Norton spectacularly failed to identify but that Malwarebytes removed:
C:\Users\currys.digital\AppData\Local\Temp\QGM179c (Rootkit.TDSS) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.
C:\Windows\Temp\cE3179s.sys (Rootkit.TDSS) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.
C:\Users\currys.digital\AppData\Local\Temp\nxfsss.bak (Malware.Trace) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.

I assume that whatever is still affecting my system was picked up at the same time but didn't get identified and fixed by Malwarebytes. Currently Norton, Malwarebytes, AdAware and Spybot - S&D all report no problems.

When I try to run GMER in normal mode, I hit Scan and it starts to scan but then after a couple of minutes the blue screen of death flashes up (too quickly to read what it's saying) and the computer restarts. When I try to run it in Safe mode, I hit Scan and it starts to scan but then after a minute or so I get an error message:

Hello and Welcome to the forums!

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Somethings to remember while we are working together.
  1. Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
  2. Please Do not Attach logs or put in code boxes.
  3. Tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
  4. Tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
  5. Do not run anything while running a fix.

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. By doing this and then choosing Immediate E-Mail notification and then clicking on Proceed you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

In order for me to see the status of the infection I will need a new set of logs to start with.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

DeFogger:
Please download DeFogger to your desktop.

Double click DeFogger to run the tool.
    • The application window will appear
    • Click the Disable button to disable your CD Emulation drivers
    • Click Yes to continue
    • A 'Finished!' message will appear
    • Click OK
    • DeFogger may ask you to reboot the machine, if it does - click OK
Do not re-enable these drivers until otherwise instructed.

Download DDS:
Please download DDS by sUBs from one of the links below and save it to your desktop:

Download DDS and save it to your desktop

    Link1
    Link2
    Link3

Please disable any anti-malware program that will block scripts from running before running DDS.
    • Double-Click on dds.scr and a command window will appear. This is normal.
    • Shortly after two logs will appear:
      • DDS.txt
      • Attach.txt
    • A window will open instructing you save & post the logs
    • Save the logs to a convenient place such as your desktop
    • Copy the contents of both logs & post in your next reply

Scan With RKUnHooker

Hello

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links.
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"
In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

When I try to run ComboFix I get a warning message:

Warning!!

ComboFix has detected the following real time scanner(s) to be active:

antispyware: AVG Anti-Virus Free

Antivirus and intrusion prevention programs are known to interfere with ComboFix's running. This may lead to unpredictable results or possible machine damage.

Please disable these scanners before clicking 'OK'.

I didn't think I'd ever installed AVG on this particular machine (although it's getting elderly and perhaps I did do it a couple of years ago), but I can see it's showing up in the DDS log too. But I can't find it as a running process or service or under Control Panel -> Programs in order to disable or uninstall it.

What's the best way to proceed? Could I boot into Safe Mode and run ComboFix from there?

I ran ComboFix, the computer restarted (I did not see whether a message came up before it restarted), then error message said the computer could not startup properly. Startup Repair ran and it's now started up.

What should I do now? (aware of dire warnings about running ComboFix more than once)

No; in fact, it seems to be gone from the desktop so I assume that Startup Repair went back to an earlier restore point? (although my log files from the previous step are still there, so I'm guessing it may be just pre-ComboFix)

Hello

What I am thinking is that the antivirus went after it when it rebooted

Ok lets try this, I want you to run combofix in safe mode but it is very important that when combofix reboots the computer for you to direct it back into safe mode so it can finish the scan.

Boot into Safe Mode

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.

after combofix has finished its scan please post the report back here.

I'm running ComboFix in Safe Mode but it's been at the Scanning for infected files... window for around 30 minutes now. I don't think I clicked on the window and stalled it that way.

How long do I let it run before I assume that it's not just a case of "scan times for badly infected machines may easily double"? And what do I do then?

OK, mixed results...

ComboFix eventually finished scanning in Safe Mode (got to Stage fifty-something, then did a "deeper scan") and got to the screen where it said it was preparing a log and not to start any other programs.

Unfortunately then it blue-screened out and the computer restarted. I tapped F8 so that it restarted into Safe Mode again but ComboFix didn't start again.

So it's (presumably) done what it wanted to do, but hasn't created a log file that I can find...

I've not had an actual pop-up since running ComboFix, but if I turn off the NoScript extension in Firefox I am still getting pages blanking out and/or redirecting (e.g. to a fake virus scanner at (or claiming to be at) http://77.78.201.155). So there's a large chunk of problem remaining.
