Which component of Windows Live? It's a huge mesh of everything from hotmail to msn instant messenger.

Is no sound limited to a certain component of Windows Messenger?

Example, do you get a sound when you receive a new email message but not work when a contact signs in?

Or does it sometimes work for everything, sometimes it doesn't work for everything?

Have you checked sounds settings?

Open Messenger. Tools/Options/Sound tab.
