Posted 26 September 2010 - 05:38 PM

My computer has been redirecting search results to random sites, and occasionally, the site pops up in a new tab. I think it may be a possible rootkit infection. I ran an avast virus search but it didn't help me. I have found that my computer is also slow and restarts from time to time. My browser IE is also crashing quite often.

Any help is really appreciated.

Thank you.

Hello mOLe,
Thanks for you assistance and help.
I am somewhat capable on the computer, but this has me stumped. Keep getting browser redirects and having to reboot very often usually in safe mode then back to normal to get system to work.
Look forward to your help in working through this issue, have considered a format and reinstall but want to see if this works first.
Thanks,
Tom

I see that Babylon search engine is on the PC. Did you request this engine to be your default search engine?

Which browser(s) do you use and are all affected?

I'd like to take a look at a possible rootkit directing this. Please run the two following programs

Please download MBRCheck to your desktop.

1. Double click MBRCheck.exe to run it (Right click and run as Administrator for Vista).
2. It will open a black window, please do not fix anything (if it gives you an option).
3. Exit that window and it will produce a log (MBRCheck_date_time).
4. Please post that log when you reply.

Then
  • Download TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.

  • Extract its contents to your desktop and make sure TDSSKiller.exe (the contents of the zipped file) is on the Desktop itself, not within a folder on the desktop.

  • Go to Start > Run (Or you can hold down your Windows key and press R) and copy and paste the following into the text field. (make sure you include the quote marks) Then press OK.

    "%userprofile%\Desktop\TDSSKiller.exe" -l report.txt

  • Now click Start Scan.
  • If Malicious objects are found, ensure Cure is selected then click Continue > Reboot now.
  • Click Close
  • Finally press Report and copy and paste the contents into your next reply. If you've rebooted then the log will be found at C:\

Which browser(s) do you use and are all affected? Microsoft IE there is safari but not used

Will start doing the MBRcheck and post that then TDSSkiller and post those results.

Thanks mOLe for your assistance.

Here are the results from the MBRCheck and the TDSSkiller attached.
I rebooted after the TDSSkiller asked me to.

Scan With RKUnHooker
  • Please Download Rootkit Unhooker Save it to your desktop.
  • Now double-click on RKUnhookerLE.exe to run it.
  • Click the Report tab, then click Scan.
  • Check (Tick) Drivers, Stealth,. Uncheck the rest. then Click OK.
  • Wait till the scanner has finished and then click File, Save Report.
  • Save the report somewhere where you can find it. Click Close.
Copy the entire contents of the report and paste it in a reply here.

Note** you may get this warning it is ok, just ignore

"Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself!

TDSSKiller did fix it. How are the redirects? Any improvement?

Please run OTL and post the log
  • Download OTL to your desktop.
  • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
  • Under the Standard Registry box change it to All.
  • Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
    • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
    • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post it with your next reply.

Good news about the redirections stopping. Let's make sure they don't return

Open OTL

Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following

CODE
:OTL
IE - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings: "ProxyEnable" = 1
IE - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings: "ProxyOverride" = *.local;<local>

Then click the Run Fix button at the top

Let the program run unhindered.

When done it will say "Fix Complete press ok to open the log"
Please post that log in your next reply. Note: If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes. In this case, after the reboot, open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTL\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.

Then please post a new scan from OTL.
