First of all I'd like to say hi to everyone. Hope I've come to the right place to get my problem (or problems) fixed.

About 2 months ago I started to notice that when using google search and opening the search results I would get re-directed to random sites. I'd press back and try clicking the link again only to be re-directed to yet another site. This happens 3 or 4 times in a row before I can access the real search result and it occurs quite often. Every time a redirect happens I see the same little logo in the firefox tabs. Looks like a little blue ribbon, but I'm not sure.

In addition to this, my system task-bar will sometimes suddenly change to a different style, (the bland and unshaded gray kind you see in safemode or on an older operating system, for example I have a green "start" menu button and that turns into a gray rectangle). It then turns back to normal after 5-10 seconds. When this happens my desktop icons (sometimes?) disappear and then re-appear again.

I did a virus scan today using CA antivirus. And noticed multiple viruses which weren't there a few days ago, can't recall the names.

Moments later something completely far-fetched happened which is why I decided to finally post my problems here. I left my computer temporarily, when I came back the screen was black and nothing responded to my keyboard or mouse commands. I pressed ctrl+alt+delete and pressed the power button on my laptop, and my task bar appeared. What I saw there was a program labeled "blank screen saver", when I closed that (or when it closed itself?) I saw a window on my desktop that was titled "my first window"... I don't know if this has anything to do with the redirect issue I mentioned earlier, seemed like some sort of hack attempt but I probably don't know any better.

I'm on a university residence network if that makes any difference. The redirect problem was there way before I moved in though.

Yet another problem I'm having is that when I do a full malware scan with CA I always see "Prokill" and cannot remove it by any means as it seems to re-appear if I scan a second time, apart from that nothing else is detected (most of the time). Prokill was there for longer than the redirect problem. I've tried scanning with avira and that didn't fix any issues either.

I'm also using an audio editing program (Ableton Live), and the CPU usage frequently spikes and the audio drops out. Installing different versions is of no help, and neither is their support team. I suspect it might be related to my infection.

Some additional Details:

- I am blocked from accessing the Windows/Microsoft update site, Firefox displays the following screen: "The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading".
- When I start up my system, I get multiple messages from CA stating that "ntsokernel32" (I think that's what it was called) is trying to access the internet. The messages states that someone is trying to access my computer and list IP's. All the ports corresponding to these IP's are in the 5 digit ranges. One of them indicated what I think is a direct connection attempt to 224.0.0.22, the port bracket was empty.

If you need me to post CA logs please let me know where i can find them and I will post them.

My Specs:

Dell Inspiron 6400
Windows XP Professional
Version 2002
Service Pack 3

Intel® Core™2 CPU
T5600 @ 1.83GHz
1.83 GHz, 2.00GB of RAM
Physical Address Extension

Please let me know if you need anymore details. I'm very concerned about this as I need to make online purchases in the near future.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, Thank You.

Greetings

One or more of the identified infections is Known as a Backdoor Trojan. - TDSS rootkit <--please read

What this virus does do.
QUOTE
Functionality
The functionality that the Trojan exhibits implies that it has been designed with profit-making as its primary objective. Making money from the Web typically involves generating Web traffic, installing pay-per-install software and also by generating sales leads for other Web sites and services of a dubious nature. It tries to achieve its objective by employing an array of techniques to try and make the user participate in these income-generating activities.

What the virus can do.
QUOTE
Backdoor.Tidserv is a Trojan horse that uses an advanced rootkit to hide itself. It also displays advertisements, redirects user search results, and opens a back door on the compromised computer.

This "could" allow hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can clean this machine but I cannot guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. "If you would like to continue, then follow the steps below, otherwise please let me know"

I Would like you to do the following.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links.
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"
In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

Gringo
