I am going crazy trying to get my ethernet controller drive downloaded.
In device manager I am getting yellow question marks and yellow !s under other devices which lists:
?! Base System Device
?! Base System Device
?! Base System Device
?! Ethernet Controller

I've tried to update the driver, nothing found. tried to uninstall and then restart, it finds the hardware but cannot find a driver for it.
I've gone to dell to try and get it, but it doesn't work. Tried broadcom, didn't work.
I did replace the motherboard in this about 6 months ago, but never tried to use the ethernet port before.
Wireless works fine.
Now my new internet provider uses a netgear router and requires me to connect with the ethernet to create the initial setup. Also, I have been unable to connect at work with wireless and I notice they use netgear routers as well.
Computer info below. Let me know if you can help at all.
THANKS!

I took your quote above and made it bold to hi-light it so I can ask you the following question.

Is this motherboard the same model number as the last one you had?

I ask this because Dell lists their computers by the model number on their computer case, not by the motherboard model number.

If you are going to the Dell web site using your original Dell model number listed on the computer case and your Ethernet NIC is built into the motherboard, this would be the cause for the driver NOT working, you are downloading the drivers needed for the original motherboard.

I need you to tell me if your motherboard is the original model number as your original motherboard.

This information you posted above is for the original motherboard that was in this case.

System Model
Dell Inc. MP061
System Service Tag: 90CTVB1 (support for this PC)
Chassis Serial Number: 90CTVB1

It would not apply if you switched motherboards.

Bruce.

I just found out it was not the same after just looking at my old mb. the original was a 0ff055. this one is a 0ff049.

The info I posted was from running Belarc Advisor.
Thanks for the quick response and any further help would be great.

Here is the meaning of code 10.

This device cannot start. (Code 10)
Recommended resolutions

Here are some things that you can try to resolve this problem.

Update the driver

In the device Properties dialog box, click the Driver tab, and then click Update Driver to start the Hardware Update Wizard. Follow the instructions to update the driver.

You may be prompted to provide the path of the driver. Windows may have the driver built-in, or may still have the driver files installed from the last time that you set up the device. If you are asked for the driver and you do not have it, you can try to download the latest driver from the hardware vendorís Web site.

View the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base

For more information about Code 10-related errors , click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
943104 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943104/ Description of Code 10-related errors that Device Manager generates on Windows XP-based computers

Your model number is a Broadcom device.

The drivers have to be for a Broadcom BCM5701 device. Dell should have a Broadcom driver listed on their web site listed for BCM5701.

If that driver fails to work, I am giving you a link the the Broadcom web site down load a driver for BCM5701.

http://www.broadcom.com/support/ethernet_n...loaddrivers.php

If you do have a BCM5701 yours would be the one listed under NetXtreme I Server

This link is embeded on the page above but in a smaller text and you might over look it. It will help you determine the correct driver for your Ethernet NIC.

I've tried everything, and tried all suggestions from here as well.
Nothing is working. I updated the BIOS as well.
I tried installing multiple different drivers with nothing working.
I tried to install the Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller and Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ehternet driver and I get the same error, This device cannot start. (Code 10).
The actual chip on the motherboard says:
BCM4401EKFBG
RN0623 P20
786652 N3

Under my Network Adapters in Device Manager I currently show:
1394 Net Adapter #2
!BCM5701 Gigabit Ethernet #3
Dell Wireless 1500 Draft 802.11n WLAN Mini-Card
Motorola SURFboard SB5101 USB Cable Modem

Oh, another thing. I can only download a driver in the Device Manager by following these steps:
Install from a list or specific location (advanced)

at this point I have the option to
Search for the Best Driver in These Locations:
search removable media, and/or
include this location in the search:
(this is where I point it to the location of the driver updates I've downloaded from Broadcom and the wizard searches and says "the hardware was not installed because the wizard cannot find the necessary software")
If I check: Don't search. I will chose the driver to install. it takes me to the next screen asking me to select network adapter. the only adapter it shows automatically is BCM5701 Gigabit Ethernet.
I do have the option to check Broadcom as a manufacturer and it will show a list of many more Network Adapters. This is where I chose to try some other ones such as the Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller, Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet.

I'm trying to give you all the info possible so maybe you see something I'm missing. Maybe something is causing conflicts, I have no clue.
I really appreciate all the help, Bruce.

Thanks,
Shayn

One other thing is that when I check the device ID I get 1708. there is nothing in the table for that ID.

You're sure it is 1708 and not 170 and a letter?

Here is what I would like you to do for me.

Open device manager and expand Network Adapters.

While this is open on the screen try to do a screen shot, and either upload it to BC or to an image web site, if you use an image web site, please provide a link to the image.

1394 Net adapter is firewire just so you know.
