yesterday I when cleaning up my ever-more-slow PC, I discovered a virus called Security Tool on my sons user name. I ran Adaware (the free version) which picked up a couple of trojans and I deleted them, restarted the PC but the virus still came up. I used this forum and a video on Youtube (?!) and got rid of it by finding it in Task Manager (it was called 49370.exe but I understand the number it uses is random) then "Search"ing the C drive for that file name and deleting it. This seemed to work but I now have a problem in that when I use Google to search for a new subject, then choose a site from the Google search list, I get directed to either a games site, medical or dating sites?!? Failing that, "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" (but I am still connected to Internet)

I have read through a few similar threads on here and there is such a lot of information and help I don't know what to do first, so can someone point me in the right direction please? Using XP and IE8 by the way. wacko.gif

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

Please include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Please refrain from running tools or applying updates other than those we suggest while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

Even if you have already provided information about your PC, we need a new log to see what has changed since you originally posted your problem.
We need to create an OTL Report
  1. Please download OTL from one of the following mirrors:
  2. Save it to your desktop.
  3. Double click on the icon on your desktop.
  4. Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  5. In the custom scan box paste the following:
    CODE
    msconfig
    safebootminimal
    activex
    drivers32
    netsvcs
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
    /md5start
    eventlog.dll
    scecli.dll
    netlogon.dll
    cngaudit.dll
    sceclt.dll
    ntelogon.dll
    logevent.dll
    iaStor.sys
    nvstor.sys
    atapi.sys
    IdeChnDr.sys
    viasraid.sys
    AGP440.sys
    vaxscsi.sys
    nvatabus.sys
    viamraid.sys
    nvata.sys
    nvgts.sys
    iastorv.sys
    ViPrt.sys
    eNetHook.dll
    ahcix86.sys
    KR10N.sys
    nvstor32.sys
    ahcix86s.sys
    nvrd32.sys
    symmpi.sys

    /md5stop
    %systemroot%\*. /mp /s
    %systemroot%\system32\*.dll /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\Tasks\*.job /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\System32\config\*.sav
    %systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /90
  6. Push the button.
  7. Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extra.txt<--Will be minimized

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. I suggest you do this and select Immediate E-Mail notification and click on Proceed. This way you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

After 5 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed.

regards myrti

is that a bird?  a plane? nooo it's the flying blueberry!

If I have been helping you and haven't replied in 2 days, feel free to shoot me a PM! Please don't send help request via PM, unless I am already helping you. Use the forums!

Hello myrti I am so excited that you have replied and are helping me!
Hope this is not TOO MUCH information but here we go....
Afetr posting on here I also posetd on tech support guys forum, they needed me to do lots of scans (HijackThis, DDS and GMER) which I did (don'tknow if you can tell from the OTL thing he he) but anyway they haven't replied to me yet (I wil close that thread now as I am working with you!)
The virus or whatever is still going, basically if you click on any new thread in a Google search, you get redirected to a games or health site. It doesn't appear to affect anything in my Favourites list, or if I type the URL in the top bar on the IE page (sorry don't know proper techie term).
Also once a browser window has been open more than a few minutes you get this come up

---------------------------
Message from webpage
---------------------------
Warning!
On your computer detected the malicious code.
Should immediately make sure that your system is safe! Killing Hazard ® for Microsoft Windows XP immediately started to work
---------------------------
OK Cancel
---------------------------

In a box that looks like Windows, but isn't - then usually a page opens up saying its doing a scan and you have got hundreds of trojans etc. I usually shut down and log off at this point.

Interestingly today, as I do this, the "warning" has come up but not the pop-up with the scan, so your magic is already working!!

Nothing seems to happen if you don't have IE or email open, but if it is you get more and more windows popping up, usually with "IE cannot display the web page" type message.

Other than that, my husband was using Word the other night and lost all his work when he had an error message saying "WINWORD had to close as it had been asked to save in a peculiar way" or words to that effect.

Anyway enough babbling and here are the 2 reports produced by OTL, hope you can make sense -

THANK YOU SO MUCH!! thumbup2.gif

Hi,

thanks! Since gmer wouldn't run, please try rootkit unhooker instead:

Please download Rootkit Unhooker and save it to your Desktop
  • Double-click on RKUnhookerLE to run it
  • Click the Report tab, then click Scan
  • Check Drivers, Stealth, and uncheck the rest
  • Click OK
  • Wait until it's finished and then go to File > Save Report
  • Save the report to your Desktop
Copy the entire contents of the report and paste it in a reply here.

Note** you may get this warning it is ok, just ignore

"Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself!
It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?"

is that a bird?  a plane? nooo it's the flying blueberry!

Hi,

you have been infected by a nasty rootkit. It is a backdoor trojan.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can still clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. Let me know what you decide to do.

If you decide to clean, then please run TDSSKiller and post the log in your next reply:
  • Download TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.
  • Extract its contents to your desktop and make sure TDSSKiller.exe (the contents of the zipped file) is on the Desktop itself, not within a folder on the desktop.
  • Go to Start > Run (Or you can hold down your Windows key and press R) and copy and paste the following into the text field. (make sure you include the quote marks) Then press OK.

    "%userprofile%\Desktop\TDSSKiller.exe" -l C:\TDSSKiller.txt

  • If it says "Hidden service detected" DO NOT type anything in. Just press Enter on your keyboard to not do anything to the file.
  • When it is done, a log file should be created on your C: drive called "TDSSKiller.txt" please copy and paste the contents of that file here.

regards myrti

oh no that is not good news. this is my main pc. I have deleted all the references to banks and changed passwords, hopefully that will save the day.

I would like to try and restore it if poss as we use it for wordprocessing etc and email mainly. If we don;t use it for anything bank related will that be relatively safe do you think? Also is there any way you can tell where it got in, my son downloaded Skype a couple of days before this happened (and I removed it 2 days later!) wondered if that was it?

Here is the tdsskiller log, hope you can continue to help, thanks for all your work so far!! mellow.gif

Hi myrti,

well I have just put it on and it seems to be coming on a little quicker. I have reconnected to the internet and don't seem to have either the re-direction problem or the fake anti-virus alert, so I think you have beaten it on those scores! Thank you so much for all your efforts. Do I need to run any more scans to check this out?

I am worried by what you said about it not being 100% safe though, what can I do about that? I have changed all passwords with the bank but I feel like I want to clean everything off this machine "just in case". I now have the windows firewall/virus/security thing in place, plus AdAware, and the tools you put me on to (not sure what to do with them now though!) What would you recommend? Sorry if I am rushing ahead its just very unsettling.

look forward to hearing from you thumbup.gif

Grrr, it was going so well.....

I switched users from my son's account to my own while I investigated the google redirect question (it still seems to be behaving properly) BUT
when I went back to my son's account there was a DIFFERENT fake scan result page! I have cut a pic of it into "paint" just for your amusement. The machine has been on about an hour now. When I closed that window it just went away, it didn't send me to an internet page or open any windows.

so frustrating!

edit to say

was playing on greatdaygames, when I clicked logout I got "the website has declined to show this page " with HTTP 404 in the top left corner? then browser redirected me to a site to buy diazepam and other precscription drugs??? have switched the darn thing off now....

Hi,

please run ComboFix next:

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • Temporarily disable isable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
Usually this can be done via a right click on the System Tray icon, check this tutorial for disabling the most common security programs: Link

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It seems that part of the infection was only installed on your son's account. What I do see in the log is the following: C:\Documents and Settings\Thomas\My Documents\install_adobe_flash.exe. I believe that your son (?) fell for a fake video that would pretend to need flash installed. One way of preventing these kind of infections is to only download software from the original website. So when the video says it needs Adobe Flash, go to adobe.com and install flash, if the message persists, the video does not really exist, but is a scam to infect you.
