My computer was running slow recently so I downloaded Spybot s&d and AVG antivirus. I ran spybot first and it found 1300 to 1400 items. I had the program fix all of them with about 20of them requiring a reboot for spybot to deal with them. No discernable difference was realized. AVG was then installed but was not set up or run yet. The next day using the internet was very slow, slower than ever. Internet explorer had AVG and Yahoo toolbars, even though I had deselected them during install. This placed suspicion on the AVG program and I uninstalled it. The computer then ran as it had in it’s youth, quick and agile. Spybot was running with each reboot, running about four more times since the initial scan, each time I chose to fix the problems. Then windows automatically loaded updates as it usually does, rebooting the system. The screen went blank - it had been doing this for about 6 to 8 months with a reboot correcting the problem. However, the reboot did not correct the problem but displayed a screen saying launch system restart and the restart failed, the subsequent message stating that I should shut down the computer because it couldn‘t be fixed. Eventually, in desperation, I rebooted into safe mode and undid the changes from the last spybot scan. I was then able to reboot normally, although still quite slow.

I believe something is amiss with this thing. I did the DDS scan and include the logs for it here. I tried to do the GMER scan but after running it for over an hour, the window with the scan in it disappeared and I couldn't get any windows to respond and had to reboot. I didn't try it again, thinking that you may be able to help without it. I could try to do the GMER scan again if need be.

Thank you.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

Please include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Please refrain from running tools or applying updates other than those we suggest while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

Even if you have already provided information about your PC, we need a new log to see what has changed since you originally posted your problem.
We need to create an OTL Report
  1. Please download OTL from one of the following mirrors:
  2. Save it to your desktop.
  3. Double click on the icon on your desktop.
  4. Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  5. In the custom scan box paste the following:
    CODE
    msconfig
    safebootminimal
    activex
    drivers32
    netsvcs
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
    /md5start

    iaStor.sys
    nvstor.sys
    atapi.sys
    IdeChnDr.sys

    nvatabus.sys
    viamraid.sys
    nvata.sys
    nvgts.sys
    iastorv.sys
    ViPrt.sys
    eNetHook.dll
    ahcix86.sys
    KR10N.sys
    nvstor32.sys

    %systemroot%\system32\*.dll /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\Tasks\*.job /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\System32\config\*.sav
    %systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /90
  6. Push the button.
  7. Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extra.txt<--Will be minimized

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. I suggest you do this and select Immediate E-Mail notification and click on Proceed. This way you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

After 5 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed.

regards myrti

is that a bird?  a plane? nooo it's the flying blueberry!

If I have been helping you and haven't replied in 2 days, feel free to shoot me a PM! Please don't send help request via PM, unless I am already helping you. Use the forums!

Thanks Myrti,

The "play sushi" popup was a symptom we were getting that I mentioned to try to meet the request by your site to identify the type of malady plaguing the computer. Since the initial post I went into "remove programs" and removed "play sushi" that was found there and also Norton antivirus as the subscription elapsed and have no intention of re-upping it. We had downloaded and installed AVG (after computer symptoms began) and promptly removed it when noticing that it had installed toolbars in the browser that we had de-selected during the install. I wasn't sure if the "play sushi" was part of the malware causing all the other symptoms or a separate pest.

Play sushi hasn't been seen since removing it, but the major problems are that the computer will get slower and slower until it freezes and needs to be rebooted. Then the reboot may take 7 to 10 tries before rebooting successfully. During these attempted reboots a black screen appears and remains, then repeated attempts eventually achieve the regular startup screen. Then the cycle begins again.

Before contacting you, Spybot was run (for the first time ever) and found hundreds of items to correct, many of them registry errors. For a couple of days Spybot was starting and running at every reboot, each time finding many items to fix including batches of registry errors. In anticipation of eliciting your help, I downloaded and ran HJT and initially had a message appear stating that I would have to run it as administrator and when I tried to do that there was no option to select "run as administrator." These things lead me to believe that something is in possession of the machine.

Do the scans not show some suspicious process running or some sinister looking .dll file lurking about? I thought surely something would emerge as the culprit that we could then eradicate and restore normal functioning.

Please let me know what our next step should be. I really appreciate your help.

Hi,

there are a couple of programs which can be considered adware on your PC mywebsearch, playsushi, etc, but nothing that would really qualify for bad malware. When did you first notice the slow down? Was it gradually or did it come suddenly?

Please run a scan with Malwarebytes next:
Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link
If you have a previous version of MBAM, remove it via Add/Remove Programs and download a fresh copy.
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself.
  • Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install. Alternatively, you can update through MBAM's interface from a clean computer, copy the definitions (rules.ref) located in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from that system to a usb stick or CD and then copy it to the infected machine.
On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware. MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you after scanning with MBAM. Please temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.

Myrti,

My computer was always working fine, except for the blank screen occasionally when I would reboot or start my computer. I figured this was a video card issue and, basically if I could get on by just re-starting it again, I was okay for the time being. Then just recently I noticed that it took longer and longer to get onto the internet, sometimes needing to wait up to 10 minutes or more. This is when I noticed a "Play Sushi" pop-up that was on screen and then off in basically a blink of the eye. So I stopped using Internet Explorer to get onto the Internet and started using Mozilla. That worked fine for awhile, but then it got sluggish again. I got suspicious of the "Play Sushi" and found that it was downloaded to my PC without my knowledge. Then all my other problems started. Sluggish internet connection, not being able to re-start or reboot without multiple tries and freezing of the PC altogether. Lately, with all that we have been doing, it's "okay" but definitely not at it's best. I still use Mozilla instead of Internet Explorer and just this morning it took over 3 minutes to connect to the internet. I have also started unplugging my internet connection when I am not using it so as not to get any automatic downloads from Dell or Microsoft. These seem to take a toll on my PC as well.

I have done the most recent scant that you requested and it found over 100 infections. A copy of this log follows. Thank you so much for all your continued help.

Hi,

please reboot and let me know how the PC is doing now. PlaySushi and also MyWebSearch that was removed by Malwarebytes frequently install without consent of the user.

Hi Myrti,

Sorry it took so long to get back to you. I did the reboot when I got home from work that evening as you requested and I was not able to get back onto my computer until the following morning do to what I suspect is my video card going bad. (All I had was a black screen). Anyways, I did the reboot and my computer seems to be fine for the most part except for the occasional "freezing" (like now when I'm trying to type this). My question is, the last scan you had me do seemed to have found a lot of infections which were deleted but you didn't mention anything about them. Is this something I should be concerned about? Also, you had asked me to download AVG, but it screwed up my computer, as well as, downloaded tool bars I did not request so I deleted it. Now I don't have a anti-virus program. Is there one you can suggest that I can try to download?

Thank you so much for all your continued help!

Hi,

MyWebSearch is a program similar to PlaySushi, it is annoying but has limited potential to do harm. Some people install it on purpose and like to keep it. It does show ads from time to time though. Basically it is adware, installing itself frequently without and sometimes with consent of the PC user and then serving advertisements.
The program is not a big threat to your PC safety or to your pricacy, I would consider it similar to a toolbar. Most people don't even notice when the program is installed on their PC.

Alternatives to AVG would be:
Two good antivirus programs free for non-commercial home use are Avast! and Antivir The antivirus program from Microsoft is doing good as well: www.microsoft.com/security_essentials
Note: You should only have one antivirus installed at a time. Having more than one antivirus program installed at once is likely to cause conflicts and may well decrease your overall protection as wellas impairing the performance of your PC.

Please install an anti virus program as quickly as possible.

As far as I know none of those programs install a toolbar, however I do know that Avira will display a popup promoting their paying anti virus program, once a day.

regards myrti
