Running Windows XP. Browser began redirecting to random sites on Saturday. Ran Spybot, MBAM, CCleaner. MBAM showed Trojan.Alureon. Cleaned it up, but continued to have same problem. I found this site, began preparing to post problem with required logs. Downloaded and ran Defogger, DDS, and GMER. While running GMER, system completely broke down to the point now where I can only start Windows in Safe mode without networking. Currently am running GMER in Safe mode to develop a log for this post. I have a log from DDS. In the meantime I can access Internet through new computer, but cannot access Internet through infected computer.

I need to post the logs, but how can I post them without risking an infection on the new machine?

All help is appreciated.

Hello and Welcome to the forums!

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Somethings to remember while we are working together.

  1. Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
  2. Do not Attach logs unless I ask you to.
  3. Tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
  4. Tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
  5. Do not run anything while running a fix.
  6. Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. By doing this and then choosing Immediate E-Mail notification and then clicking on Proceed you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

I want you to use a jump drive to pass the logs and the tools to the other but first run this tool on the new computer (with the jump drive plugged in)

: Download and run Flash_Disinfector

Download Flash_Disinfector from here and save it to your desktop.
Doubleclick on Flash_Disinfector.exe to run it and follow the prompts.
Wait until it has finished scanning and then exit the program.
The utility may ask you to insert your flash drive and/or other removable drives. This may include your mobile phone.
Please do so and allow the utility to clean up those drives as well.

now send me the logs you have and we will start from there

Got the jump drive ready, but my new laptop is running Windows 7. I've noticed in some other posts that Flash Disinfector does not work with Windows 7. What should I do instead?

No I only have the two computers. Is there a way to get Windows 7 to emulate Windows XP, like when Windows XP runs in Windows 95 compitability mode?

Will try it. My laptop has Kaspersky and attempts to run an infection scan when I plug the jump drive in. Would Kaspersky be able to prevent any infection transfer?

Hello

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:
Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode.
This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:
The Recovery Console was successfully installed.
    Please continue as follows:
    • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
    • Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the report in your next post:

    C:\ComboFix.txt

Note** If you recieve this error please reboot the computer
"Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion."

"information and logs"
In your next post I need the following
    1. Log from Combofix
    2. let me know of any problems you may have had
    3. How is the computer doing now?

Gringo

Okay, sorry for the delay. I've got ComboFix onto the infected computer, but every time I boot the computer, it automatically restarts itself about 15 seconds after first displaying the desktop icons. It doesn't give me a chance to close my anti-virus software or start ComboFix.

Hello

sounds like it is over heating, if this is a desktop, open up the side and blow a fan into it and see if it will last longer

if it is a laptop open the cd player and blow the fan in there

Let me know if it does last longer

This time it rebooted and is now locked up on my McAfee screen where I was trying to disable the scanning feature. Again, no error messages, just locked up.

Hello

Ok lets try this, I want you to run combofix in safe mode but it is very important that when combofix reboots the computer for you to direct it back into safe mode so it can finish the scan.

Boot into Safe Mode

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.

after combofix has finished its scan please post the report back here.
