I began with a "false virus alert" notification. This one disabled my ability to access the internet, start any programs, start in safe mode, anything. I was running McAfee at the time. I was able to CTRL-ALT-DEL at startup before everything was locked down and used the task manager to start shutting down programs until I could run MSCONFIG and start again in safe mode. From there, I ran McAfee, MalwareBytes, and installed BitDefender and cleaned most of the trojan out.

I still have the Google redirect problem. BitDefender has asked for special scans and they told me that my computer is clean. However, svchost.exe keeps getting blocked by BitDefender as potentially malicious, in addition to a few other programs. And one of the BitDefender scan programs didn't run or gave a BSOD. So I am sure there is still something there. Additionally, the Mozilla Firefox tools/options screen that should let me decide to accept cookies no longer has that option displayed.

At some point I had a Gen:Variant.Kazy.38 though I don't think that was the original virus/trojan.

I ran the Defogger tool. I can't see how to attach the second DDS file (attach.txt). The DDS text is below. When I tried to run GMER, the computer rebooted (no notification, just there one minute, and rebooting the next) halfway through. I have tried this program as sent from BitDefender, but they did not ask that I disable the CD emulation, or turn off any GMER options. I got the BSOD once and reboots a few times.

============= FINISH: 21:01:19.86 ===============

I was able to get a few GMER scans. I would run GMER for 2-3 minutes then stop and save the results. If I started up GMER again I got BSOD and reboot within a minute. The last time, I ran GMER for three minutes, then stopped/saved. I noticed that the BitDefender file activity window shut down in the middle of the scan. When I tried to shut down the computer after, I got several "end now" windows, and then it hung up. I had to use the power button after five minutes. It seems that GMER does now play well with something on my computer.
I have attached the DDS attach.txt file, and the GMER scans I was able to save.

In your next post I need the following
      1.logs from DDS
      2.log from RKUnHooker

Gringo,

Defogger was run and DDS log posted previously in this thread. GMER attempted to run. limited results posted to this thread. No further problems besides Google redirect, and BitDefender blocking potentially malicious activity by svchost.exe and a few other programs.
Let me know if you need anything else. Thank you. Glen

Greetings

One or more of the identified infections is Known as a Backdoor Trojan. - TDSS rootkit <--please read

What this virus does do.
QUOTE
Functionality
The functionality that the Trojan exhibits implies that it has been designed with profit-making as its primary objective. Making money from the Web typically involves generating Web traffic, installing pay-per-install software and also by generating sales leads for other Web sites and services of a dubious nature. It tries to achieve its objective by employing an array of techniques to try and make the user participate in these income-generating activities.

What the virus can do.
QUOTE
Backdoor.Tidserv is a Trojan horse that uses an advanced rootkit to hide itself. It also displays advertisements, redirects user search results, and opens a back door on the compromised computer.

This "could" allow hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can clean this machine but I cannot guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. "If you would like to continue, then follow the steps below, otherwise please let me know"

I Would like you to do the following.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links.
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"
In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

Gringo

I have disabled BitDefender. The steps were different, maybe because I have BD 2011. I disabled real time protection. However, it kept blocking programs, and ComboFix wouldn't run.

I rebooted, then opened up the BD advanced settings and disabled the real-time protection and intrusion detection. BD no longer tried to block any programs from running, but ComboFix gave me the warning that an antivirus was active and I was running at my own risk. I closed ComboFix and shut down the computer. I don't know of any more settings on BD, beyond uninstalling the software.

Ran combofix. First time it found rootkit activity. after a reboot and second scan, windows popped up a window saying it would shut down in 60 seconds due to a serious error. When it rebooted it ran CHKDSK and recovered two SPOOL... files. When windows started up, I waited a few minutes, but Combofix didn't start up again. I ran Combofix.exe again. Running now...I'll report on that tomorrow.

Combofix had been running for about 20 minutes when I went to bed. When I woke up, the computer was at the log in screen. When I logged in, I got a "windows has recovered from a serious error" message, similar to after I got the BSOD from GMER.

Hello

Ok lets try this, I want you to run combofix in safe mode but it is very important that when combofix reboots the computer for you to direct it back into safe mode so it can finish the scan.

Boot into Safe Mode

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.

after combofix has finished its scan please post the report back here.

First time I used F8 to start in safemode. Ran Combofix, BSOD after 1 minute. I missed the F8 as it rebooted. I ran MSCONFIG and set it to /SAFEMODE startup. It restarted in safemode. I ran Combofix again and it has been running for 1.5 hours now. How long before I terminate the application?

Oops, I tried CTRL-ALT-DEL to open the task manager and got BSOD. It is running CHKDSK now.

ran MSCONFIG and set it to /SAFEMODE startup.
This is very dangerous and not what i asked for you to do, it could get stuck in a boot loop that is hard to get out of

I ran Combofix again and it has been running for 1.5 hours now. How long before I terminate the application?
shut it down and start back into normal mode

when you get back into normal mode do the following

tdsskiller:

Please read carefully and follow these steps.
  • Download TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.
  • Extract its contents to your desktop.
  • Once extracted, open the TDSSKiller folder and doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then on Start Scan.
  • If an infected file is detected, the default action will be Cure, click on Continue.
  • If a suspicious file is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue.
  • It may ask you to reboot the computer to complete the process. Click on Reboot Now.
  • If no reboot is require, click on Report. A log file should appear. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
  • If a reboot is required, the report can also be found in your root directory, (usually C:\ folder) in the form of "TDSSKiller.[Version]_[Date]_[Time]_log.txt". Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
