I ran a McAfee Virus Scan on my Win Vista Home Prem SP2 32 bit OS: It found 3 infected files on my computer, (1): C:\Users\...\Edie's Folder\SmartDownload.exe CasOnline, (2): C:\Users\Guest\Desktop\SmartDownload.exe CasOnline and the third one: (3): C:\Users\...\components\gvtlf.dll GameVance.gen.d. I think I did get the first 2 off, Smartdownload.exe CasOnline??. My son put this on my computer, I went in Control Panel under Programs and removed both the Casino Sites, I then went to my regedit, and under (FIND) typed Casino and hit find. Anything that had to do with "NOTHING BUT A CASINO NAME, SHELL, and Casino.exe I deleted "ALL" from my computer. The problem I am having now is: The 3rd. File Infected: (3): C:\Users\...\components\gvtlf.dll GameVance.gen.d, I went on the internet and typed the exact name as you see, and I could not find anything to help remove it.
The other and "THE MOST VERY IMPORTANT PROBLEM I AM COMING ACCROSS NOW IS:" When I go to open a file with the .exe extension or any type of document, Ex: Excel, Word, PowerPoint ("ANYTHING") it will "NOT" open my file. A Window pops up and states: Choose the program you want to use to open this file: It gives me 8 choices, IE, NotePad, Windows Calendar, Windows Photo Gallery, Media Center, Paint, Windows Media Player and WordPad then it also gives me the choice to Browse.
**VIP**None of this with my programs started until my son downloaded the above GAMES off the INTERNET, after being told: "NEVER DOWNLOAD ANY TYPE OF GAMES OR ANYTYPE OF CASINOS ON MY COMPUTER" which went to DEAF EARS!
I have **VIP** Documents that I really need to open and cannot. I did try to use System Restore, but I have a Problem even w/that, all the backup dates when clicked on and then proceed, "STOPS" and reads: Preparing to Restore Your Computer...then I get: ERROR CODE: (0x8004231F) Insufficient Storage available, which my backup is my D: Drive. "PLEASE HELP ME, I AM DISABLED I HAVE VERY IMPORTANT DOCTOR INFO AND PERSONAL FAMILY INFO", Any and all your HELP will so gratefully be appreciated. Thank you in advance: ediebyrd59.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit scanner. Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

Hello ediebyrd59

I will be handling your log to help you get cleaned up. I apologize for the delay but the forum is very busy.

As you can see the logs we ask for are very extensive and take a lot of time to investigate. In addition, since I am still in training all of my responses have to be reviewed by our excellent expert staff so there may be a delay in response time. The advantage is that your log will be evaluated by two sets of eyes and two brains.

If you haven't already, you can keep the link to this topic in your Favorites. Alternatively, you can click the Options button at the top bar of this topic and Track this Topic, where you can choose email notifications.

Please make sure Word Wrap in notepad is turned off. When copying and pasting logs paste them directly in the reply box only attach logs if asked to. Do not wrap logs in codebox or code tags. It makes it very difficult to read and analyze them. Please paste them directly into the reply box.
Please do not make any changes to your system until we are through. Fixes are based upon information that is current from your system so any changes can affect our strategy. Please refrain from running any tools we may use without specific instructions.

If your operating system is Windows Vista or Windows 7 it may be necessary to right click then choose Run as Administrator any programs we use.

Before we begin please check and follow the instructions on How to Show Hidden Files and Folders in Windows Vista and Windows XP and How to show hidden files in Windows 7

Because the e-mail notification system is not completely reliable, please check your topic once a day for responses.

Again, keep in mind that it may take a couple of days or more before I can reply but once we get started the process should speed up.

Thank you for your patience!!
PW

Hello ediebyrd59,

I see you have Norton360 installed. Are you having problems with the program? If not, be sure to enable real time protection after running the scans I ask for.

Did you backup your registry prior to making any changes?

Let's see if we can't fix your file associations.

Step 1.

We need to use the RKill Tool by Grinler

Link #1
Link #2
Link #3
Link #4
  • Please Download Link #1. Save it to your Desktop.
  • Before we begin, you should disable your anti-malware softwares you have installed so they do not interfere RKill running as some anti-malware softwares detect RKill as malicious. Please refer to this page if you are not sure how.
  • Double click the RKill desktop icon to run the tool.
If you are using Vista please right click and run as Admin!
  • A black screen will briefly flash indicating a successful run.
  • If this does not occur please delete that application and download Link #2.
  • Continue process until the tool runs.
NOTE:
1. Try running RKill using Link 1, if it does not run, download Link 2 and delete Link 1 then try running it again.
2. If you still can't run RKill, repeat the same steps using Link 3 and 4. Please tell me if all the link does not work.
*If the tool does not run from any of the links, Please tell me about it.

Step 2.

1) exeHelper
Please download exeHelper to your desktop.
Double-click on exeHelper.com to run the fix.
A black window should pop up, press any key to close once the fix is completed.
Post the contents of exehelperlog.txt (Will be created in the directory where you ran exeHelper.com, and should open at the end of the scan)
Note: If the window shows a message that says "Error deleting file", please re-run the program before posting a log - and post the two logs together (they will both be in the one file).

Step 3.

Please download DeFogger to your desktop.

Double click DeFogger to run the tool.
  • The application window will appear
  • Click the Disable button to disable your CD Emulation drivers
  • Click Yes to continue
  • A 'Finished!' message will appear
  • Click OK
  • DeFogger will now ask to reboot the machine - click OK
IMPORTANT! If you receive an error message while running DeFogger, please post the log defogger_disable which will appear on your desktop.

Do not re-enable these drivers until otherwise instructed.

Step 4.

I need you to run GMER again.
  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs. <-----Important
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security programs will not conflict with gmer's driver.
  • Click on GMER to open the program
  • GMER will open to the Rootkit/Malware tab and perform an automatic quick scan when first run. (do not use the computer while the scan is in progress)
  • If you receive a WARNING!!! about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system...click NO.
  • Configure GMER by unchecking the following.
  • IAT/EAT
  • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive, which is typically C:\
  • Show All (This is important, so do not miss it.)
  • Now click the Scan button. If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save... button to save the scan results to your Desktop. Save the file as gmer.log.
  • Click the Copy button and paste the results into your next reply.
  • Exit GMER and be sure to re-enable your anti-virus, Firewall and any other security programs you had disabled.
-- If you encounter any problems, try running GMER in safe mode.
[*]-- If GMER crashes or keeps resulting in a BSODs, uncheck Devices on the right side before scanning
.

In your next reply please answer my questions and post the following directly into the reply box. Only attach the GMER log

exehelperlog.txt
GMER log

Thanks!!

Hello ediebyrd59,

My coach has edited out your e-mail address. smile.gif
Please do not post your email address in the public forums. This is to protect you from spam bots who will pick up your email address and spam you.

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
  • On the Scanner tab:
    • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
    • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
  • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware. MBAM may make changes to your registry as part of its disinfection routine. If you're using other security programs that detect registry changes, they may alert you after scanning with MBAM. Please permit the program to allow the changes.

In your next reply post the MBAM log. If you have any problems installing and running MBAM let me know. thumbup2.gif

Thanks!!

Hello pwqib,

I am truly sorry I have not been on the puter. I have ran all that you have requested me to do in your last response to me, I am seriously fighting the FLU (SEVERE).

I am sending all the info that you requested in your last post. Again, plz forgive me for not informing u of my severe illness, I had to go to the ER due to Temp going to 105...sorry : (..... ediebyrd59.

Please note the next reply has all the info u requested! So far, what we have done, nothing is working I am still getting these Error Messages, Maybe this will shed some light on my problem for you, I truly appreciate "ALL" your "HELP" that you are giving to me, to help me get this computer bk up and running properly smile.gif I did notice that some of my shortcut signs have changed from just a blank white w/red and blue little blocks to a White Box w/a Green Square with what looks like writing, but it's not the Actual Logo, Ex: Acrobat.com, and some others: such as .doc, .exe, and some of my .wps and .jpegs, and .jpgs. Again thank you so much for your time on this! May I ask you one more question pwqib? If we keep going and it seems nothing to date has worked, should I go ahead and put my Computer back to it's Factory Condition, since "NONE" of my "BACKUPS" are working either, so I am unable to do a "Quick Restore back to a certain date"??? I guess I am getting desperate, I have copied all most all the files as they are now onto a CD R/W R74 and also 2 Flash Drives, I just purchased another flash drive w/8 GB's to finish putting the rest of my files and my .jpgs on it, just wanted your advice or opinion on this??? ediebyrd59 smile.gif

Good Evening pwqib,

Here is the info that you request me to do in my last response from you: In your next reply post the MBAM log. If you have any problems installing and running MBAM let me know.

Thanks!!
also, when I ran the scan per your request, OMG I could not believe how many infected files were on my computer, even with my Windows Defender and at the time I was running MSE, even had I think it was 2 Trojans on there. I have expressed to "EVERYONE" in my "HOME", that when you come to visit: "HANDS OFF MY COMPUTER", I will not allow anyone except myself "NOW" to even come close to my computer, this is just to much work and with all my children they go anywhere and everywhere on the computer and have a very "BAD HABIT" of downloading songs, and misc stuff (games) and etc on my computer: "BUT NO MORE"!!!! and I do mean that truly!!!! You see o>o who is having to "CLEAN UP THEIR MESS"??? "(Thanks for the ear pwqib : ^ ) )" The program did clean up the infected files, but I am still at home plate: Just standing here and still cannot open any of my certain files: I know as you said at the beginning, we will have to take this one step at a time, and I promise I am here, just bare w/me during this "FLU", my illness. Thank you so much once again pwqib, "YOU ARE A GOD-SEND TO ME".....ediebyrd59

Also, on my first post to you today, October 6, 2010 about "Restore My Computer Back To Its Original Factory Defaults" due to any and "ALL" my backups "DO NOT WORK". I would really like your opinion on that question?

This will have to be your decision. A factory reinstall will certainly guarantee your computer will be clean and is always an option.

When you backup data you need to save any files that you want to keep as a clean install of the operating system will completely erase those files.

You can backup or save your files by burning them to CD, saving to a floppy disk, an external drive, flash or thumb drive. These might include word documents, .pdf files, music and pictures. Do not backup any programs or applications. If you use an external drive to save your data you will need to run FlashDisinfector prior to backing up.
Note: Since FlashDisinfector does not run on Vista you will need to use a clean Windows XP machine to disinfect the Flash Drive.

Please download Flash_Disinfector.exe by sUBs and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click Flash_Disinfector.exe to run it and follow any prompts that may appear.
  • The utility may ask you to insert your flash drive and/or other removable drives. Please do so and allow the utility to clean up those drives as well.
  • Hold down the Shift key when inserting the drive until Windows detects it to keep autorun.inf from executing if it is present.
  • Wait until it has finished scanning and then exit the program.
  • Reboot your computer when done.
Note: As part of its routine, Flash_Disinfector will create a hidden folder named autorun.inf in each partition and every USB drive that was plugged in when you ran it. Do not delete this folder...it will help protect your drives from future infection by keeping the autorun file from being installed on the root drive and running other malicious files.

Note that the files with the following extensions should not be backed up:
.exe
.scr
.htm
.html
.xml
.zip
.rar
.asp
.php

If you decide to continue with the cleaning process then I need you to post the MBAM scan results.

Please open MBAM by clicking the icon on your desktop.
Click the Logs tab
All of the MBAM scan logs will be listed.
Click on the the last scan log that was performed. It will look like this. mbam-log 2010-09-XX (XX-XX-XX). Where the XX in bold represents the date the scan was run and the other X's in parenthesis will be numbers.

A logfile will open in notepad. Please copy/paste this log in your next reply.

If you have any questions please ask.

Thanks!!
PW
