Ok, I first started having a problem with a rogue anti virus that was disguised as coming from Microsoft. They kept trying to get me to buy the "Microsoft virus protection", but I could tell it was not real. I ignored it at first and just exited out of it whenever it popped up. Then it kept coming more and more often. So I downloaded both Malwarebytes Anti-malware and Super anti spyware free edition and ran them both first on quick scans then on full scans. It seemed like it fixed the problem. Then a day or so later I started to notice anytime I clicked on a link after doing a search in google it would take me to some bizzare website. Mostly shopping websites with very long and akward html's. I looked it up and guessed I had what was called a re-direct virus. I updated and ran my anti malware stuff again and it deleted some stuff. But still didn't get rid of the problem. It finally started making my computer extremely slow to the point i couldn't really use the internet and when I could, it would re-direct me to crazy websites. I updated my windows and ran the free clean up software they offer and it made my computer usable but Im still having problems with the re-direct virus. I'm afraid its gonna kill my computer. And its slowly rendering my internet useless. Any help is so much appreciated. I followed the steps in the prep guide for use before requesting help. But I ran into a problem when trying to run the gmer.exe file. Every time I pulled it up it would cause my computer to lock up and do nothing. The one time I was able to uncheck the boxes as told in the directions and press scan before my computer froze, the screen turned into a blue screen and a message came up that was shown so fast and then dissapeared that I cannot tell you what all it said. But it started out saying the my computer was stopped because it detected a threat that would possible corrupt my files or something like that. But here is everything else and please let me know If I can give you anymore info. to help. Thanks so much again.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

Please include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Please refrain from running tools or applying updates other than those we suggest while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

Even if you have already provided information about your PC, we need a new log to see what has changed since you originally posted your problem.
We need to create an OTL Report
  1. Please download OTL from one of the following mirrors:
  2. Save it to your desktop.
  3. Double click on the icon on your desktop.
  4. Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  5. In the custom scan box paste the following:
    CODE
    msconfig
    safebootminimal
    activex
    drivers32
    netsvcs

    %systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\System32\config\*.sav
    %systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /90
  6. Push the button.
  7. Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extra.txt<--Will be minimized

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. I suggest you do this and select Immediate E-Mail notification and click on Proceed. This way you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

After 5 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed.

regards myrti

is that a bird?  a plane? nooo it's the flying blueberry!

If I have been helping you and haven't replied in 2 days, feel free to shoot me a PM! Please don't send help request via PM, unless I am already helping you. Use the forums!

< End of report >

The extras report is in the following post. I tried to upload it, but for some reason I'm having some trouble doing that. Which usually isn't a problem.

And Firefox automatically saves files in its download area so it didn't give me an option to save the program to my desk top. I is saved in the firefox download area as well as my other tools I downloaded to do the DDS and such.

And just so you know when I rebooted my computer and opened the internet firefox downloaded an automatic update. I know were not supposed to do any updates while going through this process but I wasn't able to control the automatic update. And I'm gonna have to post the extras log with 2 separate posts because I keep getting a "your connection has been reset" message on my browser every time I try to post it. And when I get back to the post, It is only posting about half or 3/4 of the log. And if I try to upload it, the "uploading file..." message in the forum just keeps running but it never actually finishes.

Here is the extras log:

This is very odd, but something is keeping me from sending you the rest of the Extras report. I tried to post the rest of it here but it gave me the same message as it did when I tried posting the whole thing at once. Maybe its something in the code or whatever but its very weird that it let me send the first part of it alone, but not the rest of it. My browser gives me a "your connection has been reset" message every time. It says that I'm getting disconnected with the server or that the traffic may be too busy. But it only happens when I try to post that portion of the log.

HI,

we are currently experiencing some downtime, it might be the board software that killed you off or an infection trying to prevent you getting help by blocking the logs.

Please try running Rootkit Unhooker next:

Please download Rootkit Unhooker and save it to your Desktop
  • Double-click on RKUnhookerLE to run it
  • Click the Report tab, then click Scan
  • Check Drivers, Stealth, and uncheck the rest
  • Click OK
  • Wait until it's finished and then go to File > Save Report
  • Save the report to your Desktop
Copy the entire contents of the report and paste it in a reply here.

Note** you may get this warning it is ok, just ignore

"Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself!
It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?"

regards myrti

is that a bird?  a plane? nooo it's the flying blueberry!

If I have been helping you and haven't replied in 2 days, feel free to shoot me a PM! Please don't send help request via PM, unless I am already helping you. Use the forums!

Hi,

you have been infected by a nasty rootkit. It is a backdoor trojan.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can still clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. Let me know what you decide to do.

If you decide to clean, then please run ComboFix and post the log in your next reply:

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • Temporarily disable isable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
Usually this can be done via a right click on the System Tray icon, check this tutorial for disabling the most common security programs: Link

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

If you need help, see this link:

I would like to just reformat and re-install the OS then. Thank you so much for your help. I have a small acer pc without a CD drive. All I have are thumb drives. Will I have to DL the OS to a thumbdrive using another computer so that I can install it back on my pc?Can I even do this. I looked at the papers that came with my computer and all that is there is warranty stuff. And how exactly do I re-format, through computer management>storage>disc management>ect.?

Hi,

with these kind of preinstalled PCs you will usually have a recovery partition from which the OS can be installed.

It is usually made accessible through pressing F11 in the repair environnement. If you can give me the exact name, I can see what I can find.

Hi,

you should be able to get into the eRecovery utility from Acer by pressing Alt + F10 on boot. Let me know if that works.
