Hello,

I noticed that my Norton Internet Security started to block dozens and dozens of threats a day and after researching possible causes of these threats, I performed a scan using TDSSKiller. The scan found Rootkit.Win.32.TDSS.tdl4 and I attempted to cure this on reboot several times, but it was never cured. I followed the steps outlined on this site and have posted and attached the appropriate logs below. I'd appreciate some help on removing this.

Thank you very much,
RP

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

Please include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Please refrain from running tools or applying updates other than those we suggest while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

Even if you have already provided information about your PC, we need a new log to see what has changed since you originally posted your problem.
We need to create an OTL Report
  1. Please download OTL from one of the following mirrors:
  2. Save it to your desktop.
  3. Double click on the icon on your desktop.
  4. Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  5. In the custom scan box paste the following:
    CODE
    msconfig
    safebootminimal
    activex
    drivers32
    netsvcs
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
    /md5start
    eventlog.dll

    %systemroot%\system32\*.dll /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\Tasks\*.job /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\System32\config\*.sav
    %systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /90
  6. Push the button.
  7. Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extra.txt<--Will be minimized

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. I suggest you do this and select Immediate E-Mail notification and click on Proceed. This way you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

After 5 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed.

regards myrti

is that a bird?  a plane? nooo it's the flying blueberry!

If I have been helping you and haven't replied in 2 days, feel free to shoot me a PM! Please don't send help request via PM, unless I am already helping you. Use the forums!

Hi Myrti,

Thank you very much for your response. I have posted both the OTL.txt and Extra.txt logs below as requested. Please let me know if you need anything else.

I also want to note that since my original post, I have started getting redirected on Google searches, which seems to be a common side effect of this rootkit, so I have stopped using the internet on that computer. Just a heads up in case that makes a difference.

I appreciate the help,
RP

Hi

First of all I would like you to backup the MBR:
  • Please download mbr.exe and save it to C:\windows <- (Important!).
  • Open NOTEPAD and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:
    CODE
    @ECHO OFF
    CD "%~DP0"
    MBR -c 0 1 backup_mbr.zip
    DEL %0

  • Save this as mbrlook.bat. Choose to "Save type as - All Files" and save it to your Desktop.
    It should look like this:
  • Double click the mbrlook.bat to run it.
  • A file named mbr.zip will be created on your desktop. Please attach that to your next reply.

Once we have the backup of the file, I'll give you the instructions to replace the MBR.

Important Note: While fixing the Master Boot Record (MBR) is generally safe, there is a small risk of damaging the operating system so that it will not boot up or the partitions may become corrupted. I recommend you have your Windows CD available which will allow recovering the boot code via the Windows Recovery Console in case of any problems or install the XP Recovery Console before proceeding with the above fix. Then if any problems occur, the links below explain how to use and repair the MBR:
In addition overwriting the MBR with the standard windows MBR will loose you all special functions like access to the recovery partition provided by the custom MBR of your PC manufacturer.

Hi,

I've attached the backup_mbr.zip file, but I don't have a Windows XP CD (don't think I got one with my computer), so I'm not sure how to install the XP Recovery Console. I did make a Sony VAIO Recovery Disc once last year, but is this something different?

Thanks,
Rakhee

Hi,

yes it is. The Compaq CD wil allow you to reinstall the OS if you want to choose this option. However some of the recovery CDs will not contain the utilities we need and I would prefer if you could create a dedicated CD for it:

Please download ARCDC from Artellos.com.
  • Double click
  • Follow the dialog until you see 6 options. Please pick: Windows Professional SP2 & SP3
  • You will be prompted with a Terms of Use by Microsoft, please accept.
  • You will see a few dos screens flash by, this is normal.
  • Next you will be able to choose to add extra files. Select the Default Files.
  • The last window will allow you to burn the disk using BurnCDCC
Your ISO is located on your desktop.

Let me know if you have no burner/no CDs.

Hi Myrti,

Thanks for the instruction. I burned the Recovery Console to a CD, so please let me know if there's anything else I need to do.

Many thanks,

Hi,
  • Insert the Recover Console CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive, and then restart the computer.

  • If your PC is not booting from the CD, you need to change the boot order:
    • Restart your PC
    • As soon as you get an image, press the Setup key. This is usually F2, or Del. On some machines the key can also be a different one. It should, however, be stated on the screen which key is the setup key.
    • Once you enter the computer's BIOS, use the arrow keys and tab key to move between elements. Press enter to select an item to change.
    • Navigate to the tab, where you can set the boot order. It should be called Boot or Boot order
    • The tab should now show your current boot order.
If the CD-drive is not at the top, please navigate to the CD-Rom drive with the keys arrows. Then move it to the top of the list. The keys for switching boot position are usually + to move up and - to move down. However they can be different, but they should be stated in the help, so that you can find them easily.
    • Once the CD-drive is on top of the boot order, navigate to Exit and select Exit saving changes.
  • Your PC should now boot from your XP-CD.
Click to select any options that are required to start the computer from the CD-ROM drive if you are prompted.

  • When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.

  • When you are prompted, type the Administrator password. If the administrator password is blank, just press ENTER.

  • A command prompt will open
  • type fixmbr into the prompt and hit enter
  • type exit to leave the recovery console and reboot

Boot into Windows and let me know how the PC is doing.

Hi,

I fixed the MBR and the computer seems to be working OK. The TDSS scan does not detect infection anymore and I am not being redirected on Google. Is there anything else I should do?

Thank you very much,
RP

Hi,

I ran the scan and it found no threats, so there is no option for List of Found Threats. I'm guessing this is a good thing, but is there anything else I should do?

Thanks,

Hi,

yes there is something I would like you to do to make your PC more secure:

Your version of Adobe Reader is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Adobe components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Adobe Reader Version 9.3. and save it to your desktop.
  • Uncheck the "Free McAfee Security plan Plus" option or any other Toolbar you are offered
  • Click the download button at the bottom.
  • If you use Internet Explorer and do not wish to install the ActiveX element, simply click on the click here to download link on the next page.
  • Remove all older version of Adobe Reader: Go to Add/remove and uninstall all versions of Adobe Reader, Acrobat Reader and Adobe Acrobat.
If you are unsure of how to use Add or Remove Programs, the please see this tutorial:How To Remove An Installed Program From Your Computer
  • Then from your desktop double-click on Adobe Reader to install the newest version.
If using Windows Vista and the installer refuses to launch due to insufficient user permissions, then Run As Administrator.
  • When the "Adobe Setup - Welcome" window opens, click the Install > button.
  • If offered to install a Toolbar, just uncheck the box before continuing unless you want it.
  • Once the installation is finished, open Adobe Reader and accept the warranty if prompted.
  • Click on Help and select Check for Updates.
  • A window will open and Adobe will check for Updates. If any updates are found to be available click on Download.
  • Once the update is downloaded you will get a system notification telling you so. Click on the popup to restore the window.
  • In the window that opens click Install.
  • Once the update is done click Close.
Your Adobe Reader is now up to date!

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 6 and save it to your desktop.
  • Look for "JDK 6 Update 20 (JDK or JRE)"
  • Click the "Download JRE" button to the right.
  • Select your Platform: "Windows".
  • Select your Language: "Multi-language".
  • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • Click Continue and the page will refresh.
  • Under Required Files, check the box for Windows Offline Installation, click the link below it and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button and follow the onscreen instructions for the Java uninstaller.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u20-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.
-- If using Windows Vista and the installer refuses to launch due to insufficient user permissions, then Run As Administrator.
-- If you choose to update via the Java applet in Control Panel, uncheck the option to install the Toolbar unless you want it.
-- The uninstaller incorporated in this release removes previous Updates 10 and above, but does not remove older versions, so they still need to be removed manually.

Note: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications. To disable the JQS service if you don't want to use it, go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter. Click Ok and reboot your computer.

Hi Rocco,

as a final step I would like you to remove the programs we used to delete all the backups we have:

Read those last few lines, in order to keep your pc safe and clean:
Please do the following to clean up your PC:
  1. Delete the tools used during the disinfection:
    • Download OTC from the following mirrors and save it to your desktop:
    • Double click on
    • Push the large "Cleanup" button.
    • Allow your system to reboot.
  2. If OTC faild to remove all programs from your Desktop, please delete the rest manually.
  3. Disable and Enable System Restore.
You can find instructions on how to disable and reenable system restore here:
    Windows ME System Restore Guide
    Windows XP System Restore Guide
    Windows Vista System Restore Guide

Note: You should only do this once, not on a regular basis!
You will not be able to restore computer to any earlier than today!

Please read these advices, in order to prevent reinfecting your PC:
  1. Install and update the following programs regularly:
    • an outbound firewall
A comprehensive tutorial and a list of possible firewalls can be found here.
    • an AntiVirus Software
It is imperative that you update your AntiVirus Software on regular basis. If you do not update your AntiVirus Software then it will not be able to catch the latest threats.
    • an Anti-Spyware program
Malware Byte's Anti Malware is an excellent Anti-Spyware scanner. It's scan times are usually under ten minutes, and has excellent detection and removal rates.
SUPERAntiSpyware is another good scanner with high detection and removal rates.
Both programs are free for non commercial home use but provide a resident and do not nag if you purchase the paid versions.
    • Spyware Blaster
A tutorial for Spywareblaster can be found here. If you wish, the commercial version provides automatic updating.
    • MVPs hosts file
A tutorial for MVPs hosts file can be found here. If you would like automatic updates you might want to take a look at HostMan host file manager. For more information on thehosts file, and what it can do for you, please consult the Tutorial on the Hosts file
  2. Keep Windows (and your other Microsoft software) up to date!
I cannot stress how important this is enough. Often holes are found in Internet Explorer or Windows itself that require patching. Sometimes these holeswill allow an attacker unrestricted access to your computer.
Therefore, please, visit the Microsoft Update Website and follow the on screen instructions to setup Microsoft Update. Also follow the instructions to update your system. Please REBOOT and repeat this process until there are no more updates to install!!
  3. Keep your other software up to date as well
Software does not need to be made by Microsoft to be insecure. You can use the Secunia Online Software occasionally to help you check for out of date software on yourmachine.
  4. Stay up to date!
The MOST IMPORTANT part of any security setup is keeping the software up to date. Malware writers release new variantsevery single day. If your software updates don't keep up, then the malware will always be one step ahead. Not a good thing sad.gif.
