Hi,

I recently was handed a friend's netbook with complaints of IE running extremely slowly once more than tab was open. As a matter of course I ran Spybot S&D, AdAware and HijackThis in Safe Mode. S&D and AdAware both found a small number of malware (unfortunately I didn't keep a log of what these were) and I removed the obviously bad and suspicious entries found with HijackThis.

Having thought I'd resolved the problem, I rebooted and ran IE. It's still slow and occasionally will get pop ups without clicking anything. I also get redirected when trying to go to various anti-malware sites. Apart from that, I've only seen a couple of other symptoms:

During one redirect WMPlayer and Java both started without prompting.
McAfee warns that the computer is at risk as it can't update the software.

I've run DDS and GMER however GMER crashed with a blue screen and the following error message:

STOP: c000021a {Fatal System Error}
The windows SubSystem process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0xc0000005 (0x002b0000 0x0108df84).
The system has been shut down.

I ran both DDS and GMER in a standard mode assuming that any malware would need to be active so that DDS and GMER could pick it up. I've pasted and attached the DDS logs run in normal mode below but don't have a GMER log due to the above error. I do have a GMER log from running it in safe mode so please let me know if you need me to attach that.

Cheers! (DSD Log below)

  3. Tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
  4. Tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
  5. Do not run anything while running a fix.

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. By doing this and then choosing Immediate E-Mail notification and then clicking on Proceed you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

Hi Gringo,

Thank you for replying. In the end I decided it was quicker to wipe the machine and reinstall Windows as the machine is relatively new and the owners didn't have many documents or software on it.

Unsurprisingly I now no longer see any of the issues mentioned above. Again, thank you for your reply but you may mark this topic as closed.

Cheers smile.gif
